Singapore's 99 year vs China's 70 year leases
Randy W posted a topic in The Middle Kingdom - 中国,
In China you OWN your property indefinitely. If the government wants to take "their land" back, they will need to replace the home with a new equivalent home at 1.3 times the floor space. Nobody actually holds a lease - the developers who bought it in the first place have LONG since disappeared.
That is, the "lease" applies to the land only.
SINGAPORE’S HOMEOWNERS HAVE 99 PROBLEMS (AND THE LEASE IS NO 1)
As the oldest public housing flats near the halfway mark of their 99-year leases, owners grapple with the fear that what once seemed an astute investment now seems doomed to depreciation

The Complex Legacy of China’s Cinematic Pirates
Randy W posted a topic in Culture & Language Discussion,
Western governments thought they could resolve their ideological conflicts with China through soft power and decided to provide a number of films to China free of charge. For a long time, China’s state-run China Central Television channel was allowed to broadcast many American films for free. And throughout the 1980s, mainland theaters could screen subtitled European and American films largely without fear of prosecution.-

But unlike most others on the square, Mr. Chen came with a camera, a luxury in China back then. An uncle from Taiwan had given him a Japanese-made Yashica, and before leaving for Beijing, Mr. Chen bought four rolls of film. He took photographs around the square and at other protest sites until his film ran out a week into his 10-day stay.-
