The original monastery was built in 1679 but was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution by Mao's Red Guard. The one we see today was rebuilt in 1983. The monastery has been completely restored to the normal Buddha since 1985. Lily and I visited Kunming, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna, and Dali in 2005, before we were married . Also travelled by soft sleeper on trip back.
