China's #GDP grows by 9.5% on average in past 40 years: Xi

Over the past 40 years, China's GDP has averaged an annual growth rate of around 9.5 percent in comparable prices, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday.
The country's foreign trade has registered an annual growth of 14.5 percent in U.S. dollar, Xi said at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference.
"The Chinese people have emerged from a life of shortages and poverty and are now enjoying abundant supply and a moderately prosperous life," Xi noted.
According to current UN standards, more than 700 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty, accounting for more than 70 percent of the global total over the same period, he said.#Boao2018

No Xi this year - he's got other things to attend to.

Cancelled appearances, high-profile absences, TV blackout: has China’s answer to Davos lost its sheen?
  • President Xi Jinping is in Europe, while other key officials are in Beijing for the trade talks with the US
  • Various discussions have been switched to closed-door events without explanation, with fewer high profile speakers taking the stage

Over the years, China has stepped up its effort to put the forum on the world map. Its board now boasts former officials and business leaders from Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Italy, Russia and India.
But the four-day event is still dogged by the lingering question of whether it is international enough. China’s tendency to let heavy-handed bureaucracy dominate makes it challenging to construct a programme wholly focused on commerce and business.

. . .

Du Renjie, a tech entrepreneur from Hebei Province, said that it was hard for the Boao programme to be stay completely neutral, and away from Chinese influence.
“I am here to hear from economists and officials. On the record speech is one thing, but how they interact with each other also matters,” said Du. “Networking is not my purpose of being here.”

I think China is already one of the world's dominant leaders and wants to be ahead of the US at least in GNP. and may well do it and soon.

How many more aircraft carriers and missiles and other military ware will they be manufacturing is the question. The military is always the last resort in a conflict but you have no leverage without it. So far, China can only bully the "small" countries -- VIetnam (although they better be careful there), Philippines, Japan, Taiwan.....

I think they will emerge a major player in the development of the world, if we can get them off a course of selfishness. They have done very well, but they cannot catch up to even their own success when they will not have the workers they had in today's time. The one child policy will hurt them more than I think they realize.

I just wish all of could sit down at the dinner table and eat in peace.

Boao Forum

The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) is necessary to bring all Asia together, as one cohesive unit for the betterment of humanity, Andrew Forrest, chairman of Australia's iron ore giant Fortescue Metals Group, has said.

Forrest, also a member of the BFA Council of Advisory, made the remarks before this year's annual BFA conference, which takes place on April 18 to 21 in the coastal town of Boao in China's southernmost Hainan Province and celebrate its 20th anniversary.

As one of the world's largest iron ore producers, Fortescue witnessed the fast growth of China and the Asia-Pacific region, which prompted its 13-year cooperation with BFA. This year Fortescue became a strategic sponsor for the BFA.

"I believed over 30 years ago that China had an enormous future, that the era of China had begun. And so I'm really delighted now to have created a company, which was here to serve that new era of China," Forrest said.   #Boao  Boao Forum for Asia

. . . and this year's version to include a COVID closed loop.

The 2022 Annual Conference of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) would be held on April 20-22 at Boao, in China's Hainan Province, under the theme of "The World in #COVID19 & Beyond: Working Together for Global Development and Shared Future," the BFA said in a statement on Thursday.

Remarks seen as confirmation that China will stick to stance of not criticising Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Perhaps China can convince Ukraine to just fire their weapons into the ground, so that Russia can flatten their country more easily.

China has so far resisted international pressure to impose punitive measures on its close ally or refer to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine as an “invasion,” and has instead said it would push for peace in its “own way.”

China’s state-controlled media has sought to portray the US as the villain, and also amplified Russian disinformation about the war.

Xi also told the forum that Beijing remains committed to “respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries” as well as the principle of non-interference in their internal affairs. China has long faced criticism over its controversial policies towards its far western region of Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and in Tibet, which it annexed in 1949.

The Chinese leader went on to make thinly-veiled references to US-led security blocs like NATO, and the more recent Quad and AUKUS, saying that “attempts to forge small circles or to stir conflict and confrontation along ideological lines” are “doomed to fail”.
