  1. Tired of your job? Desperate for a change? Be careful: Spend too long toiling at a dead-end job and you might find the stench of your office hard to wash off. from the Sixth Tone on Facebook Office Stench https://www.facebook.com/sixthtone/posts/pfbid0H5fHP1LeofsGWAp1g6EHe5qDanLjyuoj5UVqh5ySpfYZScoVwJycSVyhfpXAP4frl How Rediscovering User Creativity Fueled China’s Short-Video Revolution Chinese entrepreneurs once dismissed user-generated content (UGC) as “industrial waste.” Now that waste is powering their global ambitions.

  5. I decided it is time to really learn Mandarin. I tried taking courses online, I tried to get my wife to teach me, I tried three different books and none of those really got me anywhere. I want to be able to talk to my parents in law and understand what our children say to their mother when they grow up. I have a full time job, so taking a year off is not an option, however I think I can get 3 months from my boss at the end of this year and I want to spend them studying intensively in China. I am not sure when I will have the opportunity to study full time for that long again (if ever during my working life), so I really want to make the most out of that time. Anyone has any suggestions for a good, intensive and well run language program in China? I am open to going anywhere, but would prefer studying in a Mandarin speaking area to be able to practice speaking and listening on the street. I would be going alone, as I know if my wife comes I will only end up speaking English with her again.....
  6. Hello. Notice that that Amazon is selling a Language pack from Rosetta Stone. Only today. $139. Comes with a Fire Tablet. Level 1-5. Here is a link to the offer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RYX3GR/ref=s9_acsd_bw_wf_a_dlp1debf_cdl_6?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=Q2H5S30S0M5NQ2HX2FC5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=0&pf_rd_i=283155: Here is link of what part level 1 entails. At least I think it is level 1: http://resources.rosettastone.com/assets/ce/1312988079/assets/pdfs/course_contents/rs/en-US/level_1/CHI.pdf Actually they show level 1-5. Seem to be a fair amount of material. I know that there have been reviews on different language learning packages on Candle before. I wonder if anyone has had any experience with this particular offering. The description is not the best, There are no customer review. Not sure exactly what is in the box. I posted a question asking for clarification. Hope I get a reply. Depending on what is included and how the material is presented it might be a useful product. What do you guys think? Danb Some questions that I came up with. Is the program self contained? Do I need to be on the internet to use it? Is there a dictionary? Are the lessons in a video format or more of a reader/flashcard format? What features should I being looking for. A kindle as a language training "buddy", is it effective? The price, seem to be not too bad if a good system. Is there a catch such as a monthly/yearly fee? Update. I just rehecked the amazon site. It is offered in the software section.
  7. Thread of links to sites that may be useful when learning a language either Chinese or English. Some are paid sites, most are free. 8. . . . is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store, if someone wants to try it - Waygo Translator/Dictionary I use my Pleco OCR App, which is occasionally useful, but not something I use regularly. Their description of it (the Pleco app) seems to summarize the difficulties of OCR pretty well. Judging from the mixed reviews on the Google Play site, I would think the Waygo App is fairly similar. Pleco offers an entire system (at varying prices) of dictionaries, text-to-speech, handwriting recognition, etc.
  9. I wasn't sure if I should ask this in the pinned thread or not. I have the first set of CDs for the Pimsleur Approach program for learning Mandarin. I find it pretty boring. Last night I was looking at the Rosetta Stone website, then read some reviews comparing the two. Any insight into these would be appreciated. I might just have to discipline my self, and sit down and use what I've got. Thanks, Todd
  10. I saw this very mixed review of the jibbigo translator which also has a hefty app price of $25. http://kempton.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/ipad-app-review-jibbigo-english-to-chinese-speech-to-speech-translation-app/ Basically, I'm looking for something that I can type in English and will output in Mandarin Chinese so I can communicate with my Chinese family. I recognize these things have limitations so I'm looking for one that can get the conversion accurate for simple things, not an involved discussion of astro-physics. e.g. my wife is having surgery so I'd like to be able to call to let them know ASAP that everything is ok when she gets to recovery What software have you tried? and how well does it work? If you don't use software, how do you communicate without having to go through your spouse for every little word. If you tried a translator did your Chinese family react positively for your making the effort to try to communicate with them or negatively because they got irritated because the translation's voice sounded like a robot. Regards, True Blue
  11. Hi all. My fiancee and I are at the 2 1/2 month point since we filed our I129f. I am going back to China in January to visit her and would like to begin learning Chinese for that visit and for the long-term since my bride to be is Chinese :-) You guys have so much knowledge and experience. Can anyone make a suggestion as to a good resource for learning Chinese? I've looked into Rosetta Stone and Rocket Chinese. They are pricey and I'm not sure how good they are. Any help would be appreciated. thanks all :-)
  12. I picked up a fair amount if Cantonese years ago from a girlfriend I had so I know I can learn it if I try. The way I learned before was to pick english words that sound the same and think fo those when I was tryign to speak. I dont learn well from reading books and trying to Menorize it. I worry about how to pronounce things when I read them. Anyone use any good Dvd's, workbooks or what? Please tell me what you think.
  13. Hi Guys: We need some help with the adjustment blues. We waited, as you did, to get the K-1 almost two years. Overcame the blue card and she finally arrived in May. We married in June. Could not get a social security for her, not unusual. She wants to work desperately so she can have her own money, despite my offer to help. So she is quite sad and depressed. It takes a few months to get the work permit and then more months for the restrictions. There are not a lot of Chinese people here (Arizona) to help. She has few friends and she is not computer literate enough to correspond easily using the computer. (I want her to join this forum.) I noticed several people have developed means of typing Mandarin characters on their keyboard. How? The downloads to XP and Vista are clunky and slow and she has trouble with it. Patience is not one of her virtues. Anyone familiar with the Chinese Penpower system? Or any means of getting Chinese characters to the screen quickly and easily? Thanks. Any support is greatly appreciated. She is quite sad and talking about missing China. Concerns me.
  14. My Chinese wife wants to learn to cook American food. Does anyone know of a American food cookbook in Mandarin language? Thanks, TigerStar
  15. I got a FTA satellite system working this weekend. I have several options for channels of Chinese interest but, I am not sure what is spoken on them. I am almost certain CCTV will be mandarin. Some cahnnels are taiwan based though. Does anyone know if they speak mandarin in taiwan. It sounds a little different and I am not catching many words. I do not want to confuse myself listening to the wrong dialect than what Rosetta Stone teaches.
  16. I bought 8 lessons of Pimsleur for Mandarin speakers and transferred them to MP3 players for my gal and her daughter. There is plenty of room on the MP3 players. Are there any other audio teaching programs I could add to the MP3 players before I give them to them? I've got about 3 weeks to get the programs them and copy them to the MP3 players.
  17. Has anyone here used the Rosetta Stone software package to learn Mandarin? I just got a copy and I hope that it is as good as it is hyped up to be. Please share your experiences with this product.
  18. Any of you have a good "learn Mandarin" on Cd, the kind you put in the CD player in the car and "repeat after me:", .... ?? Thanks
  19. Does anyone have any suggestions on how my SO can learn some basic English. She lives and works long hours in Nanning which prevents her from lots of free hours. Any good contacts would be appreciated. Thanks and Happy Chinese New Year.
  20. I am trying to find a method of learning more Mandarin. I am 42 years old and got the Pimsleur cd's level 1. I am just finishing the 30 lessons. However the CD's have a different dialect than anybody I have tried to speak to. My fiance is from Dazhou, Sichuan and now lives in Shenzhen. I live in a small city with no Chinese classes. I even put a few ads in the local papers seeking a tutor with no response. I went to the few Chinese resteraunts but they are mostly Vietnamese owned and staffed. After several trips to the restraunts I found a Chinese girl that I can teach English to and she can teach me Mandarin. We called my fiance together and later my fiance told me the girl is not very well schooled and her Mandarin is far from refined. I realize the study of language can take many long years and was wondering if anyone has some ideas... certain books, vocal CD's, computer lessons, etc. I really don't want to learn bad habits that will be difficult to change later. At the same time I would like to keep learning so I do not forget.
  21. I remember there were some threads on what English software/lessons were available but I can't seem to find them. Help!?!
