World's Largest Snow Castle Opens in Northeast China

A 51-meter-high castle, poised to set the record as the world's highest and largest snow sculpture, opened to visitors on Friday in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
Combining both gothic and baroque styles, the "Crown of Ice and Snow" stands on the surface of a frozen lake at Sun Island in Harbin, the provincial capital.
More than 160 artists used more than 35,000 cubic meters of snow to build the castle, which covers an area of 2,800 square meters, said Yang Hongwei, chief designer of the 28th Sun Island Snow Expo.
The castle is the main attraction of the European snow town built during the expo this year, which also houses replicas of the city's iconic train station and a famous Russian restaurant, Yang said.

I always enjoy pics of the Harbin Ice Festival - I had a friend who taught several years in Harbin and he always sent us pics. It was an annual treat we looked forward to. Harbin is an interesting city, with its Russian influence and unique foods and spices. My buddy used to put pepper in his socks among other tricks to try and keep his feet warm. He usually wore several pair of thermal underwear, a couple of thick sweaters, a coat, and an Army surplus field jacket. It is a frigid place in the winter. But I would love to see the ice festival, at least once before I kick the proverbial bucket.

Winter Getaway to Harbin

Each of the three sites is well worth a visit. The Zhaolin Park, though smaller, is in the heart of the city. Its "Harbin Ice Lantern Show" brings a combination of illuminated ice sculptures and beautiful Chinese lanterns. It also holds an international ice sculpture exhibition every year. Due to its smaller size, it offers a cozier atmosphere than the other two places and is best visited at night for enjoying the beautiful lights. "Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo," in Sun Island Scenic Area, is better seen in daylight. It stands on the other side of the Songhua River, in a huge natural park surrounded by lakes and rocks. I found it the most amazing in this festival. When I visited, one of the sculptures was a huge, 10-meter-high wall, representing a big fresco surrounded by real-size houses made of snow in an area shaped like a little village. It also hosts an international snow sculpture competition every year.

But the biggest attraction of the festival is the Harbin "Ice and Snow World." This is a huge theme park, colorfully and beautifully illuminated at night which gathers real-size monuments and statues made of ice, and snow. At this time of the year, since temperatures fall to minus 25 degrees Celsius, it may be hard to spend more than a couple of hours outside. But, that is enough time to enjoy all the attractions as the show is mainly visual with illuminated ice-made monuments. The park also holds some well-orchestrated on-ice shows and entertainment events. With so many other interesting places to discover in the city and delicious food to taste, it is worth bearing the cold to indulge in this fairytale environment that engages the young and old alike.

The 22nd Harbin Ice-Snow World opened to the public on Thursday. The Harbin International Ice and Snow festival is an annual winter festival that takes place with a theme in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, and now is the largest ice and snow festival in the world. A New Year's Eve party is to follow - with a light show, live music and a disco party of some 10,000 revellers in the plan - before the festival officially kicks off on January 5 in the “city of ice” Harbin.
