  4. This article in Leonard Maltin's Indiewire was interesting in itself - a throwback to the days when vaudeville and pre-code movies comingled, a time when you could spend an entire day watching both. You'll recognize several of the names of stars who performed live on the new York and Brooklyn stages. Pre-code movies is a fascinating topic in itself - in the years before the Motion Picture Production Code was enforced, movies were not obscene or objectionable by today standards, but free to take bizarre plot twists which even today would be seen as immoral and promoting bad behavior - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-Code_Hollywood One of the stars was Anna May Wong, Throwback Thursday: Stanwyck, Crosby, Anna May Wong http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_May_Wong Anna May Wong: In Her Own Words
  5. It's just another bandwagon for China to jump on. If you haven’t discussed #ChatGPT in China, you have already fallen behind. The wave of chatting with artificial intelligence (AI) has blown up among zoomers. Launched at the end of November 2022, the number of monthly active users of the AI chat robot passed 100 million in just two months. In contrast, it took nine months for TikTok to draw 100 million monthly active users and two and a half years for Instagram. The race now is to be the first Chinese version of ChatGPT, leaving users wondering who will ultimately prevail in the final AI boom. China’s tech giants, such as Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, JD.com, and NetEase, have all entered the game. An AI race inspired by ChatGPT is in full swing. from China Pictorial on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/100063559089280/posts/pfbid0iT4bFfH12hWnZ1c2WAbhexq2kSSJU5aNkduPYD9QYSMSPSjFENAbujasSyhTh3nMl/?mibextid=Nif5oz

  7. from Goldthread ‘The Farewell’ is up for best ‘foreign’ film. Chinese audiences don’t think it should be. Frankie HuangDEC 30, 2019 The critically acclaimed film is competing in the Golden Globes under the foreign-language film category, but in China, the film is seen as a distinctly American story. The discrepancy highlights the challenge of appealing to audiences on both sides of the world. Awkwafina stars in “The Farewell” as Billi. . . . Set mostly in northeastern China, the film tells the story of a family’s concerted effort to come together and say goodbye to the family matriarch without disclosing to her that she is dying of terminal cancer—all under the guise of a hasty wedding for her grandson. The critically acclaimed film depicts lives and relationships that span continents, cultures, and languages in such a way that defies traditional geographic categorizations of film—and it seems to be suffering the same identity crisis as its Chinese-American protagonist Billi.
  8. Watched the documentary "American Factory" on Netflix last night. It's about a Chinese company opening a glass factory in an abandoned GM plant. It happened in Dayton, Ohio where Fuyao opened an auto glass factory. There are some interesting moments. It is hard to believe that people allowed themselves being filmed saying some of the things they did. There are the obvious conflicts between cultures and work styles. The last point made in the film concerns the loss of jobs to machines. That is of obvious importance to workers every where. The film has connections with the Obama's and I did not watch the 10 minute interview with them that is also on Netflix. I think it makes some pretty important points and does not seem to be overtly political. Most reviews are positive, but there are some stating that this was a complete left leaning political statement. I didn't get that, but then again, I always saw Obama as more of a centrist than a left winger.
  9. from the SCMP When Hong Kong expats were found ‘suitable’ wives by bosses and their spousesRight up to the 1950s, men arriving in Hong Kong to join companies were not expected - and in some cases were forbidden - to marry for the first 10 years, whereupon their employers would choose a mate for them, Jason Wordie writes http://cdn3.scmp.com/sites/default/files/styles/620x356/public/2015/11/12/b858290e578d153341b67c646711fe92.jpg?itok=tSG5qyGq "Newlyweds Ho Lai-sheung and Alan Pickford, the first British soldier granted permission to marry a local woman, in the 1950s." http://www.scmp.com/sites/default/files/styles/486w/public/2015/11/12/fe305cb66459699ced8c113896f36157.jpg?itok=3X8OsovI "Pickford and his wife celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Hong Kong, in 2002. 12. Hi. I would like to know what are some good sites to use to watch TV shows Movies on-line in China. I did a search on this forum but didn't come up with any ideas. I have been trying a couple site:. Tudou, Youkou, Sohu and Iqiyi. I first search for them on line. When the site comes up I will right click my mouse and ask the page to be translated to English. Sometime that works and sometime that don't. I do run into some problems. Sometimes no audio. Also getting VIP previews. They show the first 5 minutes but then the movie freezes up. I think that they are looking for money. I don't know how to pay them via my US computer. Any suggestions on the whole matter? Thank You Danb An Update: I just tried the sites that I mentioned above. It seems like I can access them. I can select a movie or TV show. But that is when things stop. I get the movie screen background but no movie. Just a message in Chinese. Yesterday things were working sometime. Today not at all. Not sure if they were just teasing me yesterday. I will try giving my Lao Po's PC a try and maybe the her Ipad later.

  16. Here’s a great movie you need to watch – “A Good Rain Knows” AKA “Good Rain Know Season” Now that I’m in my fourth year of studying Mandarin, I’ve been watching a lot of Chinese movies to practice my listening abilities and to pick up some new words. I’ve ran across this movie by accident recently, since it’s listed as a Korean movie. But it’s completely filmed in Chengdu China, and is full of Chinese culture. It’s almost like a travel guide for Chengdu China. It’s a love story with the most adorable and beautiful Chinese actress playing the lead role. Her accent and cadence, when speaking English, is so heart warming. The lead characters speak in simple English that adds to the charm of the movie. There are English subtitles for everything. Some critics wrote it’s a slow movie, but that only adds to the building of emotion of love between the two characters. I didn’t want the movie to end. On a snowy, cold and windy winter day, it was a perfect way to spend a few hours. If your eyes are not welling up with tears at minute 42:00, you must have a cold heart. Then around minute 51:00 if you don’t think she is the most beautiful Chinese woman you have ever seen, you must be watching a different movie. Finally, at minute 1:12:00, I screamed aloud “WHAT”! Mostly importantly the movie can teach members here a few things. When you are watching “May”, notice how many times she doesn’t want to say the truth but instead changes the subject or says something else. I’m not saying that it’s right or wrong or that she’s lying, but it’s something which westerners should be aware of. I have seen this many times. Finally, I think many men could learn a few things from the character “Dongha”. He always approached “May” with a quiet tenderness. Then when he received the most heartbreaking news, he didn’t scream or shout but instead he quietly said he was going inside. He didn’t cause “May” anymore pain. I know it’s only a movie, but still that is a good way to conduct yourself. Well, I think you will enjoy the movie. It’s 1:41:00 minutes long and it’s on You Tube. I noticed You Tube deletes movies for copy write reasons, so you better hurry. Here’s the link. I was able to download the movie with Realplayer, but you need to have the most updated version. Watch it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88KpO2TpiQ4
  17. Hello, everyone! You know I've been preparing myself for American life. Please don't mind me always asking questions. CFL is the only place where I get help in English. You guys have been helping me a lot. My gratitude goes to everyone of you beyond description. (1) Could someone please recommend me some American movies for me to practice listening to English? not violent or flesh things, thanks a lot. (2) Could anyone know if there are some books of Chinese traditional fairy tales or Chinese stories in English? I don't need Chinese language but English version. I've already got "Three kingdoms" in English. Now I want to collect some simple and easy ones. (3) My last question is the meaning of your names. I know most of you have a strong sense of humor in talking or in your nickname. But I know nothing of your humor, even can't pronounce your name, such as Credzba, Warpedbored, Dnoblett, Tsap Seui. I guess Nuworld means New World with its implied meaning of a new life. Randy, Mick, Thomas, Dennis, Doug, are more easier for me to pronounce lol, Amberjack is friendly too. lol But Jack is a man's name. Is Amber a girl's name? Please know I'm only learning, not being rude. Xiexie Dajia!

  22. . . . and starring Kevin Spacey. The movie is roughly 50% Mandarin, and 50% English to accommodate Kevin Spacey, but includes English subtitles for all the Mandarin parts. The reviews on it are mixed, but after watching it twice (and reading about it), I decided it was actually a good movie once you understand the plot (it's a schizophrenic fantasy for the most part, with Kevin Spacey and most appearances of his wife as elements of the fantasy). It touches on product defects and tainted food scandals. Kevin Spacey is latest A-lister to take on role in Chinese film I don't know if it's on NetFlix (I found it on the HD Movie channel here)
  23. Well the wife just updated her QQ to QQ2013 Worked great for a day then all the blote ware came into play. My main server/system was full of spam and crap. Took me almost three hours to clean out the shit that came with the new QQ2013 Come to find out that QQ2012 is no longer supported and you must upgrade to QQ2013. It appears my wife was using QQ to watch Chinese TV with the QQ2012 She had no problems then but now with the new QQ, No dice. tons of spam! As with most of our wife's they like to watch there Chinese TV. I guess my question is, Does anyone know of a good web site to stream Chinese TV with out all the crap and spam? If we keep going down the road were going down now the wife will have my company computer in the trash. I can not have my business computer crash. I/We need (more the wife than me) Chinese TV on the internet. Mike
  24. My wife uses several free IPAD apps to watch Chinese TV and movies on her IPAD. We have the IPAD to TV cable from the Apple store but it is apparently a hassle for her to hook up as she likes to flip channels and hooking the IPAD to the TV requires that she get up out of her chair every time she wants to change channels. (like we all did before the invention of the remote control). Seems a shame that my wife spends much of her time huddled on a chair in the kitchen watching Chinese TV and movies in her IPAD when she could watch them in the living room on a comfy chair on a large screen TV. Our cable only has 2 Chinese channels and they cost $35 a month with some package and my wife can get lots of Chinese, Taiwanese and Hond Kong TV channels free on the IPAD. Apple makes a product called APPLE TV. It sells for $99. We had heard that it can stream "most things" on an IPAD or IPHONE to a relatively new TV. Our TV is a year old and comes with all the bells and whistles for smart TV although no 3D (which is OK since there isn;'t much 3D content out there and we saved $300 from the same TV with 3D). The guys at the local Apple store could not tell us much - other than APPLE TV works great with LED TV's, with some LCD and plasma TVs but generally does not work and you will have lots of trouble with tube and rear projection TVs. As for what content you can stream, they said Youtube and Netflicks (which I can already get with my smart TV without the Apple TV box) and APPLE TV "should but not always" work with many other apps". I asked if we could try one of the Chinese TV apps in the Apple store but they were unable to get it to work. They were also unable to get Youtube to work (which even other customers at the Apple store said works great for them at home). Even after they got several of the kids from the "genius bar" they had problems but the "head genius" (he looked to be about 20 while the other kids looked high school age - hahaha!) blamed it on the mall's internet feed. I don't know. But that was enough of a red flag that I decided to tell them I want to do more research. Hence my question to all here. Anyway, does anyone out there have APPLE TV? Do you like it? Have you tried it with Chinese apps? Does it work streaming sound and picture to your TV? I do recommmend the IPAD to TV cable with these reservations - the connection always needs to be wiggled to get it to lock in, it is a short cable so if you have anything larger than a 20 inch tv you will be sitting far enough from your tv that you will likely be getting out of your chair anytime you want to change the volume, mute it or change a channel. But it does bring in high def continent to your TV based on whatever movie or TV IPAD apps that you have. I am not sure if using the IPAD to TV cable would work with streaming content from TV apps on an IPHONE, but it is the same connector so I think it might. Thanks for any responses. TB
