  1. That is fantastic news! A big congratulations for your wife!
  2. Newer laser printers are cheap! However, I haven't seen any that have Postscript, which may or may not be important to you. Then again, I'm fairly sure I'll be using this LaserWriter till they pry it from my cold dead hands, so I'm not really looking for a printer. With inkjets, it really does seem like the pricing model is that it's cheaper to get a new printer rather than buying a cartridge.
  3. It's all conjecture for now, until we see the videos from the consulate and from the police cars. However, I really liked reading some of the comments attached to the China Daily article.
  4. While I'm sure the details will come out when the video from the police cars, and the consulate, come out, but evading police with a car that lacks rear plates and then driving into a garage doesn't constitute a danger?
  5. There are approximately 78 consulates/foreign representatives in Houston, with an unknown number having different parking addresses from the main consulate. Since it's more important for Houston police to memorize each address than to have a diplomat follow the law, I guess we know how Texas's tax dollars are being prioritized... To take the devils advocate - If an unknown vehicle which is evading the police pulls into an barely indicated/unmarked consulate parking structure, should the police wait for the building to explode? Or just figure it is some dick with diplomatic immunity flaunting their defiance of the law and not worry about it?
  6. From news articles, and Randys comment, the consulate garage is not well marked, so how are they to know? Now that all the officers have been giving lists of consulate addresses to memorize, I'm sure that all the consulate officers in Houston will breath easier...
  7. I'm going to have to go out on a limb here - Since I have never been to Houston, I'm going to have to go by Randys comment that the consulate doesn't have a direct garage, and this sorta makes the basis for my iDeas regarding this event. As per the article that Randy linked to, the driver pulled over when he noticed that the police car with flashing lights was following him. Good for him! However, he decided that he could just drive off when he didn't see any action on the part of the police. Oh dear! Bad call number one! I would venture to guess that additional forces were on the way incase the driver of the plate-less car was a villain of vile nature. At this point he is evading the police and since I didn't read about him pulling over again until reaching the garage, this is bad call number two. Even I'm not stupid enough to think that leading police on a chase is going to result in anything nice happening to me, no matter what unmarked garage I pull into. As a non diplomat, I know that if the police pull me over, I'm sitting in my car until I'm told I can go, not when I feel like it. As a non diplomat I know that I need to have a rear plate, and that in some states front plates are optional, but most states they are required. As a non diplomat, I know that pissing the police off means I get to kiss the concrete. I know that I get to kiss the concrete even if the police just have a suspicion that something might be up. So while I'm not on either side yet, I'm thinking that the diplomat did one thing right in this series of events, and everything else was a major fnck up. I sure at some point the videos from the cars will be out there, as I'm sure the consulate videos will be out there too!
  8. Just based on what was posted, the title of the thread says he was beaten, but the posted quotation says injured while being handcuffed. What is the level of difference between those two words? What really happened in terms of the level of violence?
  9. Americans do not look down on Chinese. We don't worry about Chinese power. The truth is even worse than you Chinese think, Tangtui. The truth is, most Americans just don't think about you Chinese at all. Except for Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, most Americans don't know the name of even one Chinese city. So don't worry about racism. It is really not very common. If you come here, you are just another American. 10% of Americans are Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Philippino). Most Americans can't tell which country you came from. Most Americans wouldn't care where you are from even if they knew. So don't worry about racism and nationalism. This is what you need to know about Americans: We are not Koreans or Japanese. We do not always compete about who is more developed or who is richer. We are all different. Maybe you can say, "Koreans think this about Chinese" or "Japanese think this about Koreans", but you can never say that about Americans. Each one of us is different and has different ideas. We do not care so much about what the other person has or what they do. Each person measures himself against himself. For most Americans, it does not make an American happy to see another person fail. It does make us happy to watch someone succeed. Most of us are good people that want to help others and make friends. But we are very self-centered. THIS ONE IS MOST IMPORTANT: We live in a big country surrounded by water. Many Americans never go to other countries except Canada or Mexico. Most Americans do not understand foreign people's opinions because we never really meet foreign people. Even foreign people in America are basically Americans to us. Most Americans don't think about foreign country issues or people. Most of us do not know what foreign people do or think. This is not because of American pride. It is simply because we do not meet each other. Please visit us and get to know us. You will find many good things and many bad things. You will find things you like and things you don't like. You will find things that are better in America. You will find things that are better in China. But I don't think you will find racism. I knew an old German guy. He said that if he had watched The Grapes of Wrath, before he came to the US, he never would have come to the US. Anyway, NUWORLD, I've always said you can get more with some nice words and a two by four, than you can with just nice words. As has been mentioned, you need to have evidence up the caboose if you talk to either your lawyer, or your state agency. As for going to ICE, I'm not sure you will get anywhere with that. At a former place of employment, some of us wanted to get rid of someone that we knew was illegal, and we knew that the company knew they hired an illegal. Big waste of our time to even bother ICE. The amount of information/evidence that they required was beyond reasonable.
  10. I was just checking the gallery and came across these pics! Looks like it must have been a beautiful wedding! You have my belated congratulations!
  11. I can't say for every school, and I'm sure you never saw me with my backpack full of books, but when I went down to my home town for my high school reunion, the vice principal(who was a counselor/swim coach back in my time) told us that every class now has the books under the desk, and that the students take copies of the books home at the beginning of the year and turn them in at the end. They wanted to try to do away with book bags/backpacks, so now the students just carry their notebooks from class to class.
  12. It seems to me to be very odd, that all the advice she gives, to me is pretty much common sense.
  13. Well, I'm saying Welcome also! Kyle, being what I am, I don't pray. However, in this case, I will pray for her!
  14. Smitty

    Year of Hell

I would also like to offer my congratulations on her achievement!
  15. I saw that last night at a Norwegian website. Very tragic indeed.
  16. More Skype phones: http://shop.skype.com/phones/
  17. Congratulations RobertH! Don't bother cleaning! Enjoy that 360 while you can!
  18. I won't comment on your observations of Chinese people, but I know noisy loud Americans, and I don't know any Americans that trust the government! Most Americans I know are fairly trusting though.
  19. Yeah, 'cuz going slow is great! I wish I could have some of that 4GHz loving from IBM, with a shorter pipeline!
  20. I think not!! My dad has a MAC top of the line G4 and is nowhere the speed or performance of my system. This is what you get when you buy a store bought system. You get what THEY!! want you to have not what you want. My system above and 3timescharm's system would eat a MAC for lunch any day of the week. Besides, my system is one of a kind and can not be bought in one of those big box stores. The G4 is an excellent chip, but it hasn't been top of the line in nearly seven years.
  21. I just built up a system this weekend. I had just wanted to pick up Win7 Pro 32bit OEM at Frys, but ended up impulse buying a CPU and motherboard. Oh and some memory to go with it... It does seem to be a bit nicer than the RC.
  22. You better get your gaming in now Robert! Once Hui(and her attack cat) shows up, that 360 is going to be gathering dust! SC
  23. Well, glad you made it back in one piece Robert. So, which game is it?
