Don't make it something where she has to figure out what you really mean and try to guess what you really want. As for the weather, I think of it like this - a friend of mine joined the army. He was stationed in Germany. It gets cold in Germany. Well, he tells me about this one dude who started having problems. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Turns out he was from the Caribbean, and had never been cold! I think you may tell your wife how cold it is, but she won't have any iDea of how cold it really is until she experiences it first hand.

Political staffer taking $4700 detained and questioned by TSA. This was in the news for a bit earlier in the year.

While you can take up to 10,000 into/out of the US, you may encounter some less than stellar TSA agents, that may make your life difficult. However, since I'm not going to assume that you are traveling, as you have implied, you could.... Well, I guess it's been about twenty years since I was in Asia, so I don't know what all you would do! Just watch out for the TSA agents, if you are traveling!

Well, like Sam and Fen said, I want to smack them. Really hard. Maybe even use my work boots... It would be sadder to me to think that some people making those comments were doing it just to follow the crowd, than what might be different from the crowd in their hearts. The problem with DVDs from somewhere else is that stupid region coding. So, what you might want to do, instead of getting a DVD player in China, is get a region free DVD player, or get a second DVD player that you can region lock to China's region which I believe is 3.
