  1. Well, if this is suposed to be about "how hard it is" to find a job in the US, I think I have a little insight about that. Jen was having a hell of a time finding work in CA. You want the short of why we moved? That's it. Once here, she was working within a month. She is now doing quite well. It took me longer. 2 months after getting here, I had a seasonal job with the local Target. One month after that, I found work for a company that installs and maintains fire alarms here in NYC. We took a risk and after a few months improved our monthly income significantly. After taking this job, I continue to get job offers from other places I applied for. The point I am making, if people can't find work in a certain place, there are other parts of the country where work can be found. You just have to have the courage to do something about it. Articles like this like to find the exreme cases. The first one is blind. That is going to significantly limit opportunities. Another one was a publicity agent in LA. That sounds like the kind of job that is a dime a dozen in LA. Are times tough here in the US? Sure, but there are opportunities if you look for them. It is supposed to be even tougher here in NYC, but Jen and I managed.
  2. Wow Randy, that does look like a great idea. I'll mention it to Jen. If doing that is possible I'm sure Party A should be able to make that happen.
  3. Wise words Randy and Tsap, I can safely say that party A has no intension of just carriing that much cash onto an airplaine, especially with her "pack mule" staying home on this journey. Now I have also learned that being that party A in the child of party B, they have direct access to the acount in Country C. (this is getting hard to keep track of) Any transfers will most likely be done electronically so they might look to relatives E,F,G,H,and I if needed. There is still time so the research will continue. Thanks
  4. Howdy Y"all, Jen just hit me with a question that I'm sure has surfaced here in the past but was never someting I thought I would need to care about, so here we go. With out getting specific, party A is planning a trip to China. Part of that trip is with the intention of going to the bank with the hopes of bringing a lot of money back to the US. Now we are talking, A LOT, of money. You know, you might use words like "hundreds" in front of "thousands" type money. Soooo, what are the implications of this? Where are things like taxes or tarrifs involved? If it were say a "gift" from say, party B, does that change anything? I am sure this has been delt with by someone here, so what can party A expect? And of course, being Chinese, party A feels the less amout given to crummy politicians, the better. (me too) If any nice folks from the IRS are looking at this, this is an academic exercise only. No real money is involved. Oh, and WHERE IS MY TAX REFUND! I FILED OVER A MONTH NOW!
  5. Wait, are you saying that a flight attendant should get higher marks than a school teacher? I don't think they should be as high as a teacher, but they should be close. Or they should be if the Chinese airlines view them as they should per FAA guidelines. Flight attendants are put on flights to insure the safety of passengers in the event of emergencies and are to assist in the speedy evacuation of the aircraft if needed. All the serving food and drinks crap is secondary to their function. I don't care that the woman getting me a pillow is attractive or not, I don't want her to crumble when the crap hits the fan and she is going to be needed to do her job.
  6. When we had our house in Sactown, I put in a 550 cfm hood that seemed to do fine. Unless your going to run the exhaust a few hundred feet outside, 900 or above might be overkill. I don't remember the name, but it was ordered through Best Buy. Home Depot and Lowes are also good places to order it from. Also, keep an eye on the exhaust duct size. Higher CFM might mean a larger duct. Now for the impossible thought, with the right cookware, she can reduce the heat to the pan and thus reduce oil splater but if she is like Jen, that might be a hard sell.
  7. We already celebrated the western version of "international women's day" , we call it St. Valentine's Day. After that, comes Mother's Day if our lovely ladies have children. (and don't say anything about Father's Day, it usually is an after thought lumped in with graduations.) I'll concider this when there is an "international men's day".
  8. I know this is trivial, but, the correct term is "Daylight Saving" time. We are "saving" an hour of daylight not putining it into a "savings" account. This concludes the annoying nitt picker section of this thread.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPwK6QCveqk This was the scene from Daytona for the Nationwide series race today. For those who might not know NNS is like the minor leagues for NASCAR. This video is the race to the checker and a horrific crash at the finish. It is amazing that all of the drivers walked away. Unfortunatly, Kyle Larson's #32 car wound up in the catch fence where it was torn apart. It apears that possibly 15 to 20 fans were injured when debris flew into the stands inluding a front tire.
  10. Ah man, I was hoping to see a picture of an Earthquale. I hear them birds is pretty tasty.
  11. Well, the "older brother" comment was more a reaction to the writers statement about rickity old NYC. Sure China is much older, but if you talk about a modern city skyline, China is a much younger kid on the block. I'm sure you've seen that I like the SF skyline better than NY. I don't think the photos are done with an abundance of good judgement. Hell, I've only ever owned one copy of SI's swimsuit issue and that was because I wound up with a subscription somehow. I just don't think there is any agenda here. Just a photo artist trying to be different.
  12. With the international recognition she has, this is huge for NASCAR. I mentioned it to Jen, but she still thinks the M&Ms car is still more cute.
  13. Aother thought, this ties in with the thread on Hong Kong. The writer of this article seems ashamed of any depiction of China not showing the shining class towers of the big city. Like it or not, those children or that man on the boat are pictures from China's history. That man is doing nothing that his ansesters have done for 1000s of years. It is part of the heritage of the region and should be embraced, not hidden.
  14. Granted I've only been here in NYC for 6 months, but Manhattan looks far from rickety. This article reads like the little brother just trying to knock down the older brother.
