  1. Well, if this is suposed to be about "how hard it is" to find a job in the US, I think I have a little insight about that. Jen was having a hell of a time finding work in CA. You want the short of why we moved? That's it. Once here, she was working within a month. She is now doing quite well. It took me longer. 2 months after getting here, I had a seasonal job with the local Target. One month after that, I found work for a company that installs and maintains fire alarms here in NYC. We took a risk and after a few months improved our monthly income significantly. After taking this job, I continue to get job offers from other places I applied for. The point I am making, if people can't find work in a certain place, there are other parts of the country where work can be found. You just have to have the courage to do something about it. Articles like this like to find the exreme cases. The first one is blind. That is going to significantly limit opportunities. Another one was a publicity agent in LA. That sounds like the kind of job that is a dime a dozen in LA. Are times tough here in the US? Sure, but there are opportunities if you look for them. It is supposed to be even tougher here in NYC, but Jen and I managed.
  2. Wow Randy, that does look like a great idea. I'll mention it to Jen. If doing that is possible I'm sure Party A should be able to make that happen.
  3. Wise words Randy and Tsap, I can safely say that party A has no intension of just carriing that much cash onto an airplaine, especially with her "pack mule" staying home on this journey. Now I have also learned that being that party A in the child of party B, they have direct access to the acount in Country C. (this is getting hard to keep track of) Any transfers will most likely be done electronically so they might look to relatives E,F,G,H,and I if needed. There is still time so the research will continue. Thanks
  4. Howdy Y"all, Jen just hit me with a question that I'm sure has surfaced here in the past but was never someting I thought I would need to care about, so here we go. With out getting specific, party A is planning a trip to China. Part of that trip is with the intention of going to the bank with the hopes of bringing a lot of money back to the US. Now we are talking, A LOT, of money. You know, you might use words like "hundreds" in front of "thousands" type money. Soooo, what are the implications of this? Where are things like taxes or tarrifs involved? If it were say a "gift" from say, party B, does that change anything? I am sure this has been delt with by someone here, so what can party A expect? And of course, being Chinese, party A feels the less amout given to crummy politicians, the better. (me too) If any nice folks from the IRS are looking at this, this is an academic exercise only. No real money is involved. Oh, and WHERE IS MY TAX REFUND! I FILED OVER A MONTH NOW!
  5. Wait, are you saying that a flight attendant should get higher marks than a school teacher? I don't think they should be as high as a teacher, but they should be close. Or they should be if the Chinese airlines view them as they should per FAA guidelines. Flight attendants are put on flights to insure the safety of passengers in the event of emergencies and are to assist in the speedy evacuation of the aircraft if needed. All the serving food and drinks crap is secondary to their function. I don't care that the woman getting me a pillow is attractive or not, I don't want her to crumble when the crap hits the fan and she is going to be needed to do her job.
  6. When we had our house in Sactown, I put in a 550 cfm hood that seemed to do fine. Unless your going to run the exhaust a few hundred feet outside, 900 or above might be overkill. I don't remember the name, but it was ordered through Best Buy. Home Depot and Lowes are also good places to order it from. Also, keep an eye on the exhaust duct size. Higher CFM might mean a larger duct. Now for the impossible thought, with the right cookware, she can reduce the heat to the pan and thus reduce oil splater but if she is like Jen, that might be a hard sell.
  7. We already celebrated the western version of "international women's day" , we call it St. Valentine's Day. After that, comes Mother's Day if our lovely ladies have children. (and don't say anything about Father's Day, it usually is an after thought lumped in with graduations.) I'll concider this when there is an "international men's day".
  8. I know this is trivial, but, the correct term is "Daylight Saving" time. We are "saving" an hour of daylight not putining it into a "savings" account. This concludes the annoying nitt picker section of this thread.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPwK6QCveqk This was the scene from Daytona for the Nationwide series race today. For those who might not know NNS is like the minor leagues for NASCAR. This video is the race to the checker and a horrific crash at the finish. It is amazing that all of the drivers walked away. Unfortunatly, Kyle Larson's #32 car wound up in the catch fence where it was torn apart. It apears that possibly 15 to 20 fans were injured when debris flew into the stands inluding a front tire.
  10. Ah man, I was hoping to see a picture of an Earthquale. I hear them birds is pretty tasty.
  11. Well, the "older brother" comment was more a reaction to the writers statement about rickity old NYC. Sure China is much older, but if you talk about a modern city skyline, China is a much younger kid on the block. I'm sure you've seen that I like the SF skyline better than NY. I don't think the photos are done with an abundance of good judgement. Hell, I've only ever owned one copy of SI's swimsuit issue and that was because I wound up with a subscription somehow. I just don't think there is any agenda here. Just a photo artist trying to be different.
  12. With the international recognition she has, this is huge for NASCAR. I mentioned it to Jen, but she still thinks the M&Ms car is still more cute.
  13. Aother thought, this ties in with the thread on Hong Kong. The writer of this article seems ashamed of any depiction of China not showing the shining class towers of the big city. Like it or not, those children or that man on the boat are pictures from China's history. That man is doing nothing that his ansesters have done for 1000s of years. It is part of the heritage of the region and should be embraced, not hidden.
  14. Granted I've only been here in NYC for 6 months, but Manhattan looks far from rickety. This article reads like the little brother just trying to knock down the older brother.
  15. Frankly, I don't see any problems here. No political statements about 3rd world, 1st world, economy or cultural superiority. How about this. 1, a vast majority of SI readers will have never seen traditional clothing like this. 2, without being told so, the SI reader is not going to know they are Chinese over Japanese, Korean, or any other Asian culture. 3, they were probably chosen due to being very colorful against the backdrop of tropical plants and contrasting the model in the swimsuit. 4, the average SI reader is looking at the model and could care less that the girls in traditional clothing are from China, Alaska, the Netherlands, Mexico, or any other nation on the planet. I personally see a beautiful model posing with some cute girls who hopefully made a little money to spend the day getting their picture taken. SI has no reason to think of China in any sort of light other than providing unique locations for photo shoot. Should I read something into CBS when they choose to tape a season of Survivor in China or the Amazing Race chooses Shanghai or Beijing as a stop for a leg? Should we grill any media operation that shows a picture of China or its people?
  16. For the first time in Sprint Cup history, a woman has won the pole of a race. Congratulations Danica Patrick for winning the pole for the Daytona 500.
  17. That's the one thing I hate about restricter plate races. Guess there will be no repeat of last year's shootout. I hear you about the traffic. Last year it took Jen and I longer to get home than it did for them to run the Save Mart 350. I imagine Indy car would be more excitint on an oval like Texas. I got a free ticket for Sonoma, and it just wasn't that exciting on the road coarse. I keep warning Jen that one of these times I'll get down to Daytona for the 500. She hates to admit that she likes the short tracks and all of the beating and banging.
  18. 2 weeks ago was the Superbowl. Now it's time of more Sundays, and some Saturday as those good ole boys, and girls clime behind the wheel and participate in what has become one of the biggest sports in the US.(This year, Danika Patrick will be racing the whole season with the Sprint Cup) I started watching this little event back in 2001. FOX for the first time was goint to be covering NASCAR and started with the Daytona 500, known as the "Superbowl" of NASCAR, ironically the first race of the season. Yes, my first race was the one where Dale Earnheardt lost his life doing what he loved so much. Through the years, I've become more of a fan. Now I rarely miss a race and the past 2 years even attended the California races. As I get ready to watch tonights Sprint Unlimited Race, with my M&Ms at the ready, I have started trying to figure out which races are within reason for me to attend. Looks like Pocono will be in my sights this June and August. Jen is more of a passive fan. She really does't know Kyle Busch by name so she will just ask, "where is M&Ms?" Well, they about to fire the engines so time to go and root for #18. So Boogity, Boogity Boogity! And see you at the checker!
  19. Zhenghong, I'm hoping that you will give us a chance here to help you understand who we are. Although some members live and work in China, most of us do not. We may not have a heart for all things Chinese, but for almost all of us members, at least one Chinese girl owns our heart. I, myself have had a relationship with my Chinese girl now for 10 years including almost 8 years of her being my wife. In that time, I have learned much about China through her and she has learned much about the United States though me. That is what this forum is here for. We are trying to learn about where ore ladies are from and the culture we are being introduced to. That being said, you also have to understand that for the most part, the members here are Americans and we are going to have opinions shaped from our lives growning up in a completely different culture you may be used to. As Americans, we can temd to say things and have opinions you may not agree with and might believe to be completely wrong. Are we always right? No. But then we may not always be wrong either. I don't agree with everything I read here and sometimes I think someone's post is foolish or out and out stupid. You can choose to argue with them or look the other way. The better way would be to tell us your thoughts of the issue. You say we can not understand the Chinese feelings about Hong Kong or Taiwan? Tell us yours. Help us understand and who knows, you just might learn something about us crazy Americans.
  20. If this had been an accident here in the US, this would have been the center of major news reports for days. A truck full of fireworks going up would be tragic and cause much destruction to the truck and surrounding cars, but knocing out 80 meters of a bridge? Black powder and paper is just not that powerful. As for "congratulating officials", first I would like to see the actuall article, but 9/11 really can't be used as a comparison. FDNY lost 343 of thier own on that day. Port Authority and NYPD also lost large numbers. Since the NY OEM was on site at the World Trade Center, even the mayor and staff were right in the middle of the chaos on that day. That is a big difference from politicians that show up on scene after the fact.
  21. I thought it was awkward, but was fine. I'm curious, were there upset with the kiss itself or the partisipants. I'd bet both kids have seen plenty of kissing, but only from beautiful people.
  22. Jen kept asking why the 49ers just don't push the other team out of the way. I could't get her to understand that it just isn't that easy.
  23. http://www.youtube.com/RAM?sid=1037056&KWNM=dodge+ram+super+bowl+commercial&KWID=3774805145&channel=paidsearch&spid=SB_2013 Every year among the sexy and funny commercials at the Super Bowl, there are one or two made to inspire us. This years best came from Dodge Ram remembering Paul Harvey and a tribute he did to farmers. Now I know that farmers exist in every country on the planet, but this is a look at the American Farmer. Much of the American way of life was centered agriculture and it really wasn't until the 20th century that it changed. In my opinion, this was the best add during the game. http://youtu.be/AMpZ0TGjbWE
  24. I would not think so Doug. You made some valid points about the program and NASA does deserve some criticism for the direction they chose. I think they were drawn into the glamour of a space plane. You have to admit as a vehicle, it looks pretty cool. I'm sure there were better ideas out there. I can't wait to see Orion.
