1. Jiaying received her Employment Authorization card and her driver's license in the mail, and got 2 job offers. Not bad for someone who doesn't speak English yet. The job offers - one was at a new grocery store, but they want her to work 7 days a week. The other one is at a restaurant (Kim Son) and only 5 hours a week on Sunday. It should be a good way to get her foot in the door. The question here - her Social Security card has the stamp on it: "Not Valid for Employment Unless Authorized by the Department of Homeland Security", while the Employment Authorization card clearly says "Dept of Homeland Security" and "Authorized to Work in the US". Is there really any reason to go back and get a new SS card without that stamp?
2. Those are pdf documents - you might right click, save as, and then open them into the Adobe reader if the link doesn't work for you.
3. . . . and, if anyone wants Chinese character handwriting recognition, install the Japanese IME!

5. My wife received a call while we were in Beijing - her son took it since he had her cell phone and then called us on mine. The purpose was to let her know that they would send her P3 back so that she could fill in the lines about whether he would be coming with her.
6. A couple of facts that you've (hopefully) already considered: a) Your house counts as an asset on your affidavit of support Any money made on the sale of your house that isn't plowed into a new one is taxable.

8. The children may follow to join up to one year after the interview. My understanding is that the consulate will leave this as an open issue, and that you will have to prove custody and bring them in for an interview (up to one year later). This has no effect on your application, since the issue is left open even if you say that no they will not follow to join. If they are scheduled for an interview, however, it might be best to inform the consulate in advance that they will not attend. I don't think the follow to join will work from another country, but I hope something works out for you.
9. I'm sure the visa you're talking about was granted based on the totality of the circumstances and case that was presented. Do you have any tidbits of knowledge to add that would enhance the value of having stated this single isolated fact? 215687 They have provided a LOT of advice, Mike. Perhaps having assets in the US to cover any potential costs (including the return) helps the case.
10. You know you're close when they can correct the pronunciation for you. unfortunately, when I try the corrected pronunciation, they usually have no clue what I'm saying.
11. Exactly what I asked for. They couldnt understand why she didnt need the physical. 215537 It seems like this should be no more difficult than explaining that you don't want fries with that, but apparently in most cases it is.
12. Christmas is BIG business on ANY side of the Pacific - that is why it's stretched out to before Halloween now.
13. The forum provides a permanent record for everyone, while the chat room dialogue is only seen by the participants.
14. Jiaying says she speaks Yulin-hua as a separate dialect from Cantonese (she also speaks Mandarin). For a dictionary, check out Pleco-dist for the PDA. It includes the Oxford and several other dictionary options, including a character dictionary which shows the Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese pronunciations and meaning of each character. And excellent character recognition for anyone who can do the stroke ordering. Cantonese has high, low, mid, mid-to-low falling, high-to-mid falling, various rising tones - about 7 to 16 in all.
15. We simply asked for the Vaccination supplement for the I-693. $10 and 5 minutes.
16. We have our interview scheduled for June 10th. Congratulations and thanks for the help!

18. Don't be surprised if it doesn't show up at all.
19. The US government has no jurisdiction over businesses in other countries.
20. It is also best to not confuse the eyes of a Candle Poster with the eyes of a Visa Officer.
21. It seems to be a crap shoot, although some seem to have better luck than others. One Chinese friend has had her parents over for 2 differenty stays, while another's parents decided that they were too old to be taking an all day trip to Shanghai simply to donate the visa fee to the consulate (they were turned down 3 times). Some advice from a success story
