  1. Yan has decided to enroll in a local college. She has attended ChengDu university . She cannot get her transcript from highschool and thinks it will be the same with her college also. The college MAY just need her diploma. They want it offically translated. Anyone deal with a company here in the US that handles this.
  2. Will this be looked at abuse or abandonment? Without a police report confirming abuse it may be difficult to show a case in her favor. Her place of employment is also providing a place to live ?Not to stick it to her landlord it would take a month or two to have her evicted. Maybe she has some breathing room there. Look into some churches for help. As others have mentioned it is time for an hour visit with an expert in this matter.
  3. I'm sure I'll probably be criticized for the statements I've made today but I stand firm for my beliefs. There is no country on earth that does not control their borders. If you with open arms invite the world to our door without controls we in a short order would cease to be a nation. I see that being from illinois you have little at stake in turning over the southwest to mexico. Reminds me of the tree huggers......They want to set limits how a landowner can use his property but I have not heard of any of them tearing down their own house to make more forest for the spotted owls
  4. Maybe a handfull who desire a free ride home will go for this deal. It takes us months and years to get someone here the legal way and according to the article it takes months and even years to deport an illegal. No wonder we are in this state of affairs in dealing with immigration in this country. slow slow slow.......
  5. Yan works with computers and her english is fine. She could write and read english better than she could speak. We both bought a web cam and used MSN and yahoo messenger. I had sprint international so that I could have a phone bill for future need at interview time. I would call her up and ask if she was busy. We would talk on the phone for a few minutes and then go to the web cam. As time went on her spoken english inproved a great deal. We kept an occasional copy of our chat and instant message's.....for interview time. Do this once in a while as yan's computer crashed more than once (virus) and I had to send my copies in the mail. You should always try to work on things that would be needed for the interview. Snail mail and packages also were nice to send and receive. I was 12 hours different in time from her so at times someone lost a little sleep. On occasion she would IM me when things were slow at work when she saw that I was online. With the webcam she saw the different seasons by pointing it outside and that was a first introduction to winter. Try to explain 2 feet of snow in upstate NY to a Chengdu girl My family and hers were introduced to each other over the web cam. There are scammers on both sides of the ocean. If your intended can talk to your mother, sisters and brother. You take some of the worry about how serious your commitment to the relationship. And vice versa.
  6. My wife doesn't want to drive, but wants an electric bicycle. So I bought her a cute electric bike, and I will get myself one when I save a little extra money. I bought the tomtom. It speaks mandarin (and many other languages Shanghai-ese .. ) I have played with it, and it works fine walking or riding a bike. When I was in China, my biggest fear was getting lost. Finally my wife wrote our address in Chinese for me, and I knew enough mandarin to ask the taxi driver to take me to the written address. Once I KNEW I could always get home, I traveled further, and discovered I could do many more things than I ever thought ahead of time. One day I need to post about my search for toilet parts to repair our toilet in China .. You know there is NO Lowes or home depot there ?!? Or another day I set out to fix the loose electrical outlets in the house. Anyways, the bring me home button was my reason to buy my wife a gps (that and a new tech toy). Do they make an english version for chinese cities for us americans who know little chinese. I read once that for security reasons ,maps made 15 years ago (or so)left out many streets in the english versions. Only when people from outside of china were bringing in better maps than were provided did things improve. Now we have google earth
  7. Had an exgirlfriend from china who immigrated to toronto and started to do a k-1 on her years ago. . Most important question is what is her status with canada.
  8. Best answer for anyone reading this is within 90 days from now.You are standing on US soil and cannot take a chance on sending the wrong impression about getting married.
  9. I am flabbergasted that the american government is keeping the family of a US citizen apart If you go to visa journey and look at a country like say India many people are sitting on a long wait. You are not talking about the american government but a single or a handfull of government workers that have been handed the ability to play "god". What happens behind the doors of GUZ is hard to know. Would a supervisior pull an employee into his office and tell him or her( you need 5% more cases finished every day). fastest way is to hand out a blue slip. Maybe someone has to chase that blue slip down. Really do a lot of running and work for one case. It just sits at the bottom of a pile. Maybe it is the other way we can keep a full staff here busy if we have a great deal of blue slips handed out. Keeps the funding up. Job security. Truth is no one on this board has much of an idea about the inner workings of this government agency. We just hope the do a good job and they are a bit more on the ball than most government workers. Wait until you need to go to a SS office to get your intended a card and you are denied because that person has no idea of her duties and the actual rules she has to work with. Her main worry is putting in that next 20 years to retirement.
  10. Back 10 years ago when I was in China this was a valid law. We could only stay at certain hotels. It would cost $75-100 per night and up. Many rooms chinese would be $ 20-30 not as nice mind you. Non Chinese would pay double for a plane ticket also. My girlfriend had me stand outside a hotel in Haikou on Hainin island while she booked the room so we could stay at chinese price. This was back in the time of the friendship stores where an american could shop for goods that the average chinese was not allowed to buy. Everything has been relaxed today. From what I have read if you are in a rural area and people have less exposure to nonchinese there could be discrimination in dealing with nonchinese . In large cities today there should be no problem. Have your chinese friend make all the reservations and she could make clear you are an american and see where it goes. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1089.html Americans in China, who are not staying at hotels, including Americans who are staying with friends or relatives, must register with local police as soon as they arrive. Otherwise, they may be fined up to 500 RMB per day.
  11. Yan talks to her qq group and nursing seems to be best for employment with accounting a close second among chinese woman here.
  12. They have you flagged as a fraud case. How much can you put your hands on . Do you still have plane stubs and credit card statements. This is dealing with who paid for what. How about checks showing you paid on the charge account. The biggest problem is trying to lay your hands on information that is now needed. To be angry will do you no good. Instead if an IRS audit you have a GUZ audit so just go step by step and get the information needed for your case. Just be prepared for a long ride as this will not be over quick. Many people have undergone this with good outcomes.
  13. My wife yan said to have her write the checks for a month to really see what goes in and out. She had a wake up call when she started to do this as far as cash flow goes in our situation.

  15. Some people are cat people and others hate them. My mother would never have a cat in the house. They are not clean enough. You are looking at a personal matter not cultural. In dealing with the money matter .Everyone desires to have a little money of their own. You need to feel her out and see what the level she needs as a security point. Maybe she desires 3 grand enough to get her back to china if baba or mama is sick. I think this is very common. Very few credit cards are used in China and cash is king. That is the cultural aspect of your problem. She desires to take care of her security issues as you have pointed out in the past your income level could be better. In my marriage Yan does put all her paycheck into our joint account by direct deposit and then she has a small amount of cash for her spending "mad money" "the $5.00 pair of shoes at wallmart that were on sale " of course. Our account is joint but she is not comfortable writing checks. I make her on occasion as we hope to bring her son here and and joint use of assets will be looked at. Their are many people on this board who's spouse desires to send money back to help with the family and they want to use their own earned money . Maybe this has not helped you much. I understand as much as anyone the struggle with money. Winter is comming and with it is $ 4-5.00 fuel oil. Between gas and heating oil we could spend 25% of our take home income if we have a global cooling period (for a few months) Upstate NY winters ....gotta love them.
  16. Evidence of Assets If you want to use your assets, the assets of your household members or dependents, and/or the assets of the immigrant you are sponsoring to meet the minimum requirement, you must provide evidence of assets with a cash value that equals at least five times the difference between your total household income and the minimum income requirement. For the assets of a household member, other than the immigrant(s) you are sponsoring, to be considered, the household member must complete and sign Form I-864A, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member. All assets must be supported with evidence to verify location, ownership, and value of each asset. Any liens and liabilities relating to the assets must be documented. List only assets that can be readily converted into cash within one year. Evidence of assets includes, but is not limited to the following: ~ Bank statements covering the last 12 months, or a statement from an officer of the bank or other financial institution in which you have depositis, including deposit/withdrawal history for the last 12 months, and current balance; ~ Evidence of ownership and value of stocks, bonds, and certificates of deposit, and date(s) acquired; ~ Evidence of ownership and value of other personal property, and date(s) acquired; and ~ Evidence of ownership and value of any real estate, and date(s) acquired. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=308 Q. My sponsor and/or joint sponsor is using significant assets as part of his affidavit of support. Does the final rule change the requirements for significant assets? A. Yes. The final rule reduces the value of assets that immediate relative spouses and children of U.S. citizens must have to fill the gap between earned income and the poverty guidelines from five times the difference to three. The gap is reduced further for those sponsoring adopted children who will qualify for citizenship under the Child Citizenship Act, but who do not qualify immediately upon entry. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;#entry292751 Can you get a co-sponser to be on the safe side. Another asset to use is your 401-k minus the penalty for early withdrawl and taxes.
  17. mmr - $30 Tetanus - $17 Had blood work drawn to prove chicken pox titer. about $60 at the public health clinic. This is per round you need 3
  18. Dennis keep writing....I enjoyed this story so much. Many newer members will learn a few things. Have a friend who grew up in the depression and it affected her life to this day .75 years later. Her husband had a good job installing printing presses 20 years ago and worked 70-75 hours a week for years. She still has 30-40 pounds of beans in the house. .......for when the next depression comes. Thought that was silly about the depression thing but she may see one here yet .
  19. If you cannot communicate with each other why even get married. Marriage is tough enough when you both speak the same language and come from a different culture. The effort has to be made to learn a common language. From her side or your side. Or both. Asking for a chop stick is easy....Talking about your retirement plan or why you are 1000's of dollars in debt is not.

  21. I had an ex chinese girlfriend that would have to drop off her client at a massage parlor. Come back 2 hours later and walk inside and pay his bill. (she was in real estate). Massage parlors and china are not new.If she had a green card it would be enough to get deported if convicted. Unless she lived a very sheltered life in china she understood what the business was for.

  23. http://www.amazon.com/Fiance-Marriage-Visa...4433&sr=1-1 Get a copy of this book and read it. Lawyers are all over the book as far as prices. If you search for one please post some prices for their services without mentioning the firm. I was taken for $ 5000, about 10 years ago by a shyster immigration lawyer so I have a opinion that ranks on the low side of them. A friend of mine used one for about $2500 for the K-1 and was charged $ 1500 for AOS paperwork. My AOS paperwork took about an hour to fill out and I used Visa Journey and the book with advice from some members of candle. You willl collect all the information for your lawyer . In the end his $10/hour office help will fill it out and he will sign it and send you a big bill. Perhaps your time is worth more to you per hour than most people reading this forum. Then it makes sense to use one. Or if there has been a problem with her and immigration before (an overstay for example) then at least seek the advice of one. Note: Being refused for a visitor's visa is not one of them. It is not an issue in dealing with K-1 or K-3 visa's. Every one has been refused at least once in dealing with that visa.(visitor's) in China. You can do this yourself you just need to have on hand what GUZ needs and desires at that time. AN example would be proof of relationship. Telephone bills,Letters through snail mail, Internet message's Gift cards. And on and on and on.
  24. You are flying international. You will have a plane change in Tokyo Narita and you will never leave the international terminal.Just have to show your passport when landing. The staff handles chinese often so no problem at the airport. If you live in NY fly into JFK They handle international travel all the time. Wife went into JFK as her POE. NO problem . You can ask for for a 90 day EAD card which is only obtained at JFK¡¡ from a response of a person who replied to my question about going through jfk a year ago It took almost 3 hours to go through immigration, allow the extra time. It all depends upon the motivation of the people working, some are real lazy. If she wants to work she will need to request that her I-94 is stamped with "Temporary Woek Authorization". JFK is the only POE still doing this. After she gets out of immigration there are cart racks, it costs $3.00 in quarters. They are sometimes, if not sold out, available at the baggage claim before immigration. After she comes out into the open area she will have to board the airtrain which goes between terminals. It is a hike to get to the station. My Fiancee came in on American Airlines, Terminal 8. Other termonals/airlines may be better. They are remodling JFK and Terminal 8 is still old. We had to walk to Terminal 9 to board the airtrain. My honest opinion is that you should go to New York to meet her. Get a room close to the airport, such as the Fairfield Inn, and take their shuttle to the airport. Meet her, let her grt some sleep before continuing your journey. My Fiancee came from Ukraine and had been up for almost 24 hours when she finally cleared immigration. We were driving home from the airport to Buffalo. It made her first night much more relaxed and our drive was really nice as she was awake and checking out her new country. Just my opinion, it may not work for you. But I would really stress that she can use your help at the airport after clearing immigration. My Fiancee also speaks english, it is more just getting through a strange airport when you are real tired. Good luck and let me know how it goes... yan said you can pay with Dollar bills for the cart. .
  25. Would you have liked her to suggest you go to the hospital. Many hospitals in china are exspensive and of poor quality. If she has not been exsposed to western hospitals she might have thought you were better to be at home and from a money standpoint cheaper to stay at home. If you had been in china she would have gone to the drugstore down the street and ordered something. Being in the US It is a totally different ball game for her. Look at this as a cultural difference more than anything else. When you feel better maybe just sit down and talk about how you should be taken care of when sick and vice versa.
