  1. Can anybody tell me if I can get a temporary drivers license in China. I heard you could at some airports for short stays. My wife has a car and asks me to drive when I visit her mostly on the highways. Or any other advise. ( besides don't drive in China haha ) I have a US license
  2. Wondering if anyone has had to deal with getting a license for their foreign spouse in MIchigan? I see SoS offers interpreters for the testing. But what we are trying to find out is if they offer the handbook in chinese language? Ive been searching the web everywhere but haven't come across anything. How would one take a test without a good study guide in their language? She understands a good amount of English, but she is worried that she will come across some words she isn't familiar with. How did anyone deal with this?
  3. I was wondering if anybody has any experience on getting a longer visitor visa for China. I have a 10 year Chinese visitors visa now but can only stay 60 days at a time. In order to get a drivers license I'm being told I need at least a 3 month visa. I don't see myself staying 3 months at a time but really would like to be able to drive while am there on my visits with my wife. She has a car but has only been driving few years and she scares the living daylights out of me the way she drives and on longer road trips it would be nice to switch drivers.
  4. Hi all, I am now here in Michigan and would like to start with my driving course and take note i am just a beginner. What steps should i must do or prepare to apply driving? PLeaseeee share any ideas guys and i appreciate in advance any help i could get, thank you.
  5. Hi! I've been searching all morning for a web site that has practice tests in Mandarin with no luck. Is anyone aware of such a test online?
  6. My sister passed away (age 61 from breast cancer) last week and I need to head to the U.S. to close out her affairs. I have a Chinese driver's license, an old Texas driver's license which expired in 2011, and, of course, my passport. I'm thinking I'm okay as far as driving, but that I should head for the DPS office as soon as I can to get a current license from the state of Texas. I can use my sister's address. I think the International Driver's Permit is not possible for a Chinese license. I won't be able to rent a car with my Chinese license, but I will have my sister's car (provided my brother gives it back - he took her car and is being a real dick about it since he found out that a fourth, non-family member is in her will). Does this seem about right? I'll be leaving Sunday night.
  7. Hey Everyone, Been awhile since I posted anything. I think i posted this at one point. My Wife and I live in the State of South Carolina. She has yet to get her Driver's Permit. Your pretty much disabled if you can't drive. The state does not offer the test in any other language except English and last I check, no interpreters. Anyone have any suggestions? The two States that do offer the test in Chinese is right beside us. North Carolina and Georgia but I think you have to have residency in that state to qualify. Thanks, Vinny
  8. Hi everyone! I passed the road test easily in the summer of 2013 and have my American driver's license now. BUT I don't think the officer should let me pass because he only let me drive slowly through some quiet streets. I'm just not confident in driving. When practicing driving, I would imagine that a racing car suddenly comes to hit me. Then the fear attacks me again and again. Right now I'm still in fear of driving. I don't dare to drive or even to think to drive on the busy main road. Would anyone please give me some tips to help me conquer the fear? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Merry Christmas to everyone!
  9. My wife has a good sense of direction and tends to get around town well without a GPS, but she does like having one to get her home or to odd places, over the years we have had a couple Magellan units, they seem to work well for a couple years each, the first one started getting crazy with it's routing, and map updates became unavailable, the second Magellan worked well, but lately it started having power issues. This past week, I spotted a basic Garmin unit for sale at B.J.s Wholesale, the nüvi 50LM, price around $90, it has a lot for a basic unit, it seems to have a lot of map-data loaded, way more than just North-America, when setting it up it asks for Region, and has places in it's list like U.K, south Africa, Europe, even China, and Australia. It's language selection is very large too. I set it to display in English, and can set it's speech to Chinese, or English, my wife prefers English speech. The Garmin had lifetime map updates, where the Magellan I had to pay to update, the only + on the Magellan I had was traffic alerts, which the basic Garmin does not do, the next model up from Garmin does do traffic alerts. Going to have to do some testing of it to see exactly what it can do, from what I read it should at least do Canada and the USA, which is all I really care about.
  10. After 11 years of living in China we will be moving to the States in the first half of 2014 and wondering if anyone has any experience in obtaining car insurance after being out of the US for a lengthy period. I previously had Allstate, but the last year of coverage was in 2012; have a car w/insurance here in China but not sure if the insurance record can be generated by PICC or not - or even if I want it to be! . Also my Chinese spouse will need insurance coverage, has had a Chinese driver's license for 5+ years. Any experience in adding a newly immigrated spouse to insurance coverage? Any advice, input would be appreciated. Andy

Driver's Handbooks in Chinese for other states are not known to be available - check with your Dept. of Motor Vehicles or their website The original discussion thread from 2006 is here - http://candleforlove.com/forums/topic/16706-drivers-handbook-in-chinese/ . . . and 2010 - http://candleforlove.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42075
  12. My wife is taking driving lessons in china and hoping to get her drivers license in the US ASAP. (It's too late to get a Chinese license, which we now realize would have been transferable.). We could show residence in Illinois because we have a joint bank account there and get our taxes mailed there. Anyway, how long does it take to get you SSN once you arrive? Is it possible to get a drivers license before you get your SSN? Thanks in advance.
  13. It will be the best money that you can ever spend.
  14. Looking ahead I want my fiancee to get an international driving permit from China. Her Chinese drivers license is valid in my home state of Florida. However, if she is stopped and they do not know it is a drivers license she can be cited. So my question is where would she have to go in order to obtain the international driving permit before she leaves China.
  15. Li got her driver’s permit today. In Beaumont TX or Houston TX it depends who you talk to if you can use an electronic translator. The first time we went to Beaumont driver’s license place the lady told us what papers we would need and I asked her if Li could use her electronic translator to take her test. The lady said yes she could. We went back the next day with the correct paper work. We got a different lady there so Li asked her if she could use her electronic translator the lady asked the lady next to her and she said it is up to you. So she asked her boss the boss said no. The boss said she could use a paper dictionary. Li took her test without anything. She did not pass had a score of 65. In TX they only have Spanish and English test. So today we went to Houston TX to take her test. I asked the lady if Li could use a electronic dictionary. She said she did not know so she went and ask someone and came back and said she could use it. So Li took her test and passed with an 84. So now comes the fun part and teaching her how to drive.
  16. Hello, I applied for my California id card at the DMV back in Feb. this year and I just got a letter from DMV saying "unable to validate the documentation". I took my husband's last name when we got married. And it turns out that my last name in the system is still my maiden name. I am so confused how can this be since I got both my green card and SSN with my husband's last name on it. I talked two different agent from legal presence verification unit. One said that I need to go to a California field office to get this corrected and the other one said that I need to go to the local DMV to add my maiden name as a AKA and that would do it. Does anyone know why is this happening and how to fix it?
  17. If you have a valid PRC license, do you need to take the road test and written test in Florida to get a Florida license? Tried to call Florida Dept of Motor Vehicles and have been "on hold" for well over 5 hours over the parts of the last 3 days so I have used up all my cell phone minutes for the month. Thought someone might know the answer here. My wife had a Chinese drivers license and let it lapse. She lived in the big city and didn't have a car. She is going back to China for a visit this summer and thinks she can learn faster from a Chinese speaking driving instructor. "Other Chinese women here in the USA" (that she knows in other states) said she will have great difficulty understanding the road test examiner. She hopes to avoid the Florida road test because they failed the road test due to nerves and not understanding the examiner. I understand that getting a drivers license in China is probably not going to make her a safe driver in America. Also I intend to buckle up and ride shotgun for the first six months or however long it takes for her to become a safe driver in the USA. Just wondering if it makes sense for her to get her PRC license while she is in China as a way to avoid the road test. She is sharp and will have no problems passing the written test and I can teach her the road part over time and am willing to do it. We only have one car so as a practical matter she can't drive without me in the car anyway. Just trying to calm her since "other Chinese women here in the USA" said she will have great difficulty understanding the road test examiner. And we all know anything said by "another Chinese woman here in America" is taken with the weight of Moses commandments carved into stone. Anyone know? Ideas? I did RTF here but couldn't find this answer. Thanks for your help TB
  18. Lao Po didn't drive in China and speaks English well but has some difficulty reading certain terms. (1) Got state driving manual and translated to Mandarin for her to read over the course of a week. Each day she made a list of questions or US specific driving terms that she didn't understand. Each evening when I got home I tried to VISUALLY show her some of the items that confused her. We would go to the driveway and I would demonstrate the difference between high beams and low beams or showing her how parking brakes worked. We would drive to a place where 2 lanes merged to one to show her the road signs and the traffic pattern. Some items (driving on hills or roundabouts) weren't available in Central Florida so I found a picture or internet video. (2) Then we downloaded several free practice tests. She got about 50% on the road signs and maybe 35% on the traffic regulations her first test (after 1 week of study). I took the tests and got 80% (minimum to pass and I had to guess several times) on the road signs. I got 55% (failed) the traffic regulation part missing questions like "how long does it take a freight train going 30 MPH to stop?" "how long is your license suspended if you get 18 points in 18 months?" "how long can a teen driver drive at night at age 17?" and "what is the effect on mescaline on driving?" (I knew it wasn't good but I guessed it was a downer not an upper or some such thing). Lao Po was discouraged especially after I told her I read some folks from China need to take this 5 times before they pass. (3) Then I decided to pay (over Lao Po's strenuous objections that this was wasting money)$15 for a random driver test database that generated random tests and tracked her score. Best thing I ever did! After a week of slowly improving her score and more importantly understanding how the questions would be phrased, she took the tests and passed with a 95% (only missed 1 question!). In Florida you must pay for each retest if you do not pass the test, so I told her the $15 actually saved us money. Meeting a Chinese girl at the Drivers License office who came to retest brought home that point! So if you can find such a database for $15-$30 for your state, buy it! It is well worth the money and taking several hundred tests on line really took any nervousness factor away when she took the real test at the drivers license office. Lao Po was confident and aced the test! Many on line test database are available for sale for each state. Look for one that has a large database of questions and tracks the scores of each test so you can see improvement and areas need more study.
  19. In less than a week my little honey bun with be here and we can rejoice together. So with that in the near future, she will need some transportation. I currently drive a coupe, so I don't have any room to lug anything around, not even a suitcase. So I was thinking about getting some type of crossover. I didn't want to get anything to big for her because of the obvious, bigger cars are harder to drive. I know I don't want to spend more than $10,000. So what did you get for your wife as a first time driver? You can list the cars as well that she had starting from the first car to what she is currently driving. If you did get her some nice expensive car, did she damage it severely which made you wish you had bought her a beater to start of with?
  20. Hello All, My Wife would like to get her driver's license so I do not have to take her to grocery store everytime or just go shopping. Many States only offer English exams only. Looks like the State of SC is one of them. I've been told that no interpreters are allowed and no Chinese test available. Aside from having to put my Wife through kindergarten again, anyone have any thoughts on the best course of action? I can always have her mash buttons until she passes the knowledge test but then we still have the road test. Can she take her knowledge test in a State that offers Chinese then take road test back in South Carolina? Thanks, Vinny and Qing
  21. Hi, If an american wants to drive/rent a car in China, do they need a drivers license? If so, is it easy to apply for one? We only go back and visit the family once a year for few weeks and we plan on getting a car for next visit for the family but i would i like to drive in china as well. Any one has any knowledge in this area, i would be grateful. thanks.
  22. Now that she is licensed to drive, she says she needs a Chinese language gps. Does anyone make a gps that is easy to use and easy to switch from Chinese to English language? Since all the street names are in English how useful is it to have the commands (turn left on Maple Street) in Chinese?
  23. I have come across a post that talked about teaching your spouses to drive. I have come across an instructor or two in my area that specialize in teaching the driver to pass the driving test. Now when the wife's patience runs out with you teaching her then this option tends to be somewhat attractive, not to mention desire to get that license. But one thing has to be understood. Studying for the test and passing it does NOT mean that you are ready to drive. Sure they might pass the test but the driving miserably fails as soon as they leave the testing grounds. This is giving her a sure death sentence! My wife first fell for the fast instruction needed to pass the test but I told her it was not efficient enough for her to safely drive on the road. Believe it or not she believed me. I told her that if she was properly trained to drive on the roads and negotiate her way in parking lots then she could easily pass the test.. One day it will be time to cut them loose on their own. Make sure they have complete control of the car, control of all the signage and lights, and the ability to watch out for others that are not obeying the laws. As my wife says, older people are harder to teach than young people. I have found this to be true. Good luck to everyone!!
  24. We went down to the DMV for Lancy to take her written drivers test and hopefully to get a learners permit, but when we got there I found out that because her I-94 was expired she wasn't elligible to take the test, no proof of her being here legally. I was told that she needs a valid I-94 or a I-551 form. Does anyone know what we can do or do we have to wait for the green card before she can drive? I'll try to figure out what the I-551 form is and see if I can possibly get one of those. Thanks, Auggie & Lancy
