Now that she is licensed to drive, she says she needs a Chinese language gps. Does anyone make a gps that is easy to use and easy to switch from Chinese to English language? Since all the street names are in English how useful is it to have the commands (turn left on Maple Street) in Chinese?

Has anyone had any experience with iTalkBB telephone service? A friend of my wife's (Chinese woman of course) told her about this telephone service which she says we can replace our home telephone service for $24.99 per month and allow her to telephone China for free!! It sounds too good to be true. Any info would be helpful.

Several weeks ago the local Tennessee Drivers License Testing Center refused to allow my wife to take her written test. They said her visa had expired and even though we were in the process of adjusting her status she could not take her test until she received her new visa. Following is the response I received from my e-mail to the TDL main office. As you can see, the local office is wrong again!!! This applies to Tennessee but anyone preparing to take the DL test should check with the main DL office in their state and go armed with the correct information before attempting to take the DL test. "I apologize for the confusion you encountered at the local driver license testing center in Sevierville. The requirements vary slightly for how to process someone in a K1 status with expired I-94 and it appears the examiners may not have been familiar with this process. When the I-94 has expired the applicant must provide the I-797 Notice of Action showing that USCIS has received the application for conditional residency/adjustment of status. As long as you have this I-797 along with the passport, expired I-94 and the certified marriage certificate your wife would qualify to apply for the Temporary Driver License (TDL). If your wife passes the required exams she will be issued a one (1) year TDL. During that year she should receive her conditional resident card that will be valid for 2 years. Once she has received that 2 year card she can return to the driver testing center and get the TDL renewed until the expiration date as shown on the conditional resident card. (Note: She can choose to wait until the 1 year expiration to renew but the length of time issued and cost for the renewal will remain the same under either course of action.) After the duration of the 2 year conditional residency period your wife will be eligible to renew/upgrade to a full permanent Tennessee Driver License (DL). She will again be required to provide the documentation (I-797) from USCIS showing that her application for "removal of conditions" has been APPROVED. (Note: If her TDL is expiring and she has not yet been approved by USCIS she may renew the TDL for another 1 year period as long as she has an I-797 showing USCIS has received her application for removal of conditions and/or an I-797 showing her conditional residency has been extended for 1 year.) The I-797 along with her valid (or expiring/expired) conditional resident card will be required at the time of this renewal/upgrade." Hope this helps someone.

In June I purchased a one way ticket on United from Beijing to Chicago to Knoxville, TN for my wife to leave China. The cost was about $900. The same round trip ticket was about $1200. After purchase of the ticket I was able to re-arrange the seats on-line so we sat together to Chicago. Mr. Yang was able to purchase tickets for us on China Air from Guangzhou to Shenyang cheaper than we could either on the telephone or on-line. Mr. Yang even personally delivered the tickets to our hotel room near the Consulate. I would suggest that anyone needing airline tickets from Guangzhou to anywhere in China check with Mr. Yang.

The key here is "valid" I-94. In our case (K-1) even though we are married, my wife's I-94 expired June 25 and she is not allowed to take her drivers test after that date. I guess now we will wait for her I-766 Employment Authorization card. A heads-up to others in this situation, take the drivers test before the I-94 expires.

I took my wife for her written drivers license test yesterday in Tennessee. I took all the information required on the Tennessee drivers testing website. Once at the testing center we were told that my wife cannot apply for a drivers license because her visa has expired. My wife arrived in the US on March 26, 2009 on a K1 visa, we were married on April 25, 2009. My wife¡¯s visa expiration date is September 16, 2009. The drivers license testing center will not consider any date beyond the June 25, 2009 date shown on the I-94. I told them the June 25 date no longer applies since we were married within the ninety days but they said whether we are married or not means nothing to them, only the date on the I-94. I showed them our biometrics appointment letter (July 21) but they said this means nothing to them. My wife can only apply for a drivers license when she gets a new visa. She is not happy with this answer. Has anyone else had a similar experience? If so what did you do and/or is there anything we can do?

We received our new ACS Appointment Notice yesterday. I guess I'll have to take back my "Just love that efficiency" crack. Our appointment is in Charlotte, NC July 21 so it is only eleven days from the first canceled appointment. Hopefully everyone who received a canceled appointment has received or will soon receive their rescheduled appointment. Good luck.

Today I talked with a human at USCIS about the "No Need To Appear" appointment notice. I was told that they received a memo today about the "No Need To Appear" notices. The notices was sent because they overbooked the biometrics appointments. I was also told that if we went to the appointment on the "No Need To Appear" notice, they would not do the biometrics at this time!! We are to wait for another appointment notice that should come in the next two to four weeks??? Just love that efficiency. If anyone does go to their biometrics appointment on the "No Need To Appear" date please let us know what happens.

We also just received our NOA for our I485 and I765 that states "APPOINTMENT CANCELLED" "No Need To Appear At ASC" but it also states "IF YOU FAIL TO APPEAR AS SCHEDULED, YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE CONSIDERED ABANDONED". I'm afraid to miss the appointment but our Application Support Center is 4 hours from our home. Our appointment time is 10 am and since I don't want to miss two days from work, we will need to leave home at 5 am to give us time to find the building. The NOA says to bring this Appointment Notice and a photo ID. Should we bring any other documents, just in case? I'm sorry that others are getting the same notice but now we don't feel so alone.
