  1. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/p...D=2009906300343 On the Lou Dobbs show recently, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Council and Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. of the High Impact Leadership Coalition were confronted with the policy choice of whether to give emergency treatment to a 3-year-old undocumented child. Dobbs pushed a trade-off between "covering citizens and illegal immigrants.'' Rodriguez said that illegal immigrants should be covered; Jackson said they should not be treated the same as citizens, but then suggested he wouldn't turn the child away. I suspect most Americans agree with Jackson. But what about for legal immigrants? Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch of Utah and Mike Enzi of Wyoming have an answer: Restrict them. Their proposal would require that immigrants not be eligible for any new government health benefits until they have been legally in the country for five years. Something to chew on I am off to work
  2. Dan we need to get together. With yan working the hours she has been it may need to be on a sunday morning. Yans dream job is to get a degree in accounting and like in china work for the government. With the way this country is going we all will be working for the government in one form or the other.
  3. I hope this is the correct forum now. Yan has been here over 2 years She found a part time job working in a wokery for a local grocery chain after about 6 months here. Still not happy she wanted an ¡°office job ¡±.We live a half hour away from the "big city" and we have poor bus service up there. She put in her resume with many employment services including one in our local town that upon hearing no drivers license refused to put her in the system. She was a database administrator in china. In her early years she did a lot of data entry.Well a data entry job came up through kelly services. This position was in our local town. She was so discouraged that she did not want to apply. Well I would not take no for an answer. So I dragged her over there. She got hired..........She made no mistakes on the data entry part. 100 percent acc on the numbers. She has been working through kelly service for the last 8 months. Today she will be hired with the firm. It is a grain brokerage company and she works with a software program that no one knew how to run when she got there. She has gone from 9 to 13/hour with benefits. She will continue to work weekends at the wokery. She will work 6-7 days a week and also attend college nights. For other chinese women struggling I hope this can encourage you.I have a very proud and happy chinese wife for the moment.

  5. 1st labor dispute and the whole factory will be shipped to china.Buy the factory for 10 cents on the dollar.
  6. Maybe their spin of the news is different than our spin we see here in the states.
  7. Before yan moved here she shipped several boxes from chengdu. Looking at one it looks like it is from the post office and it has 445x350x350 mm on it. It took about 3 month to arrive when shipped the "cheapest " (slow) way. Customs opened one of the four from the looks of the boxes when they arrived.
  8. http://www.cnbc.com/id/30836189 The renminbi is eventually going to be the next reserve currency of the world. Twenty years from now, perhaps fifteen years from now, the Chinese are opening up there currency more and more every month, every year. And that¡¯s going to continue ... who knows how high it will go," Rogers adds. With China, currently the largest creditor nation in the world, and with a balance of trade surplus to boot, Rogers would rather own the renminbi (also called the yuan) than many other currencies. But he adds that he doesn't understand why China has a blocked currency. Currently, there are restrictions on money leaving or entering the country and as such, the renminbi is not fully convertible. "China has not made many serious mistakes in the past two to three decades but this is one of them. I don't know why they still have a blocked currency. This is not 1979, it¡¯s not even 1999. It's 2009 and China doesn't need to do that any more," Rogers says. More of Jim Rogers' Outlook on CNBC.com

  10. I registered when I went to see yan as it showed on an offical paper that I stayed at yan's home. Thus proof we met. I had been cautioned that if a neighbor had "bad" blood with your intended they could turn you in with hopes of causing trouble. Yan and I went to the local station in ChengDu and it took about 10 minutes . A woman was reporting her moterized bike stolen while we waited. The officer showed NO interest in her problem. Boy she was hot and getting hotter. I think the officer wanted to get back to watch his TV show. This I found a bit interesting.
  11. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2f842dec-38d8-11...?nclick_check=1 The US could repair its balance sheet through asset sales and fiscal transfers instead of just printing money. The $2,000bn fiscal deficit, for example, could have gone to over-indebted households for paying down debts rather than on dubious spending to prop up the economy. When property and stock prices decline sufficiently, foreign demand, especially from ethnic Chinese, will come in volume. The country¡¯s vast and unexplored natural resource holdings could be auctioned off. Americans may view these ideas as unthinkable. It is hard to imagine that a superpower needs to sell the family silver to stay solvent. Hence, printing money seems a less painful way out. The global environment is extremely negative for savers. The prices of property and shares, though having declined substantially, are not good value yet and may decline further. Interest rates are near zero. The Fed is printing money, which will eventually inflate away the value of dollar holdings. Other currencies are not safe havens either. As the Fed expands the money supply, it puts pressure on other currencies to appreciate. This will force other central banks to expand their own money supplies to depress their currencies. Hence, major currencies may take turns devaluing. The end result is inflation and negative real interest rates everywhere. Central banks are punishing savers to redeem the sins of debtors and speculators. Unfortunately, ethnic Chinese are the biggest savers. Diluting Chinese savings to bail out America¡¯s failing banks and bankrupt households, though highly beneficial to the US national interest in the short term, will destroy the dollar¡¯s global status. Ethnic Chinese demand for the dollar has been waning already. China¡¯s bulging foreign exchange reserves reflect the lack of private demand for dollars, which was driven by the renminbi¡¯s appreciation. Though this was speculative in nature, it shows the renminbi¡¯s rising credibility and its potential to replace the dollar as the main vehicle of wealth storage for ethnic
  12. We can see maybe in the future. A person is stuck in guz land for a few weeks while attending an interview. " Quarantine in GUZ "you could write a new chapter for candle.
  13. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30471035/ 305 quarantined in Hong Kong hotel China worked aggressively to track down people who may have been near a sick Mexican tourist, sealing 305 people inside a Hong Kong hotel where he stayed and hospitalizing 15 fellow passengers. The man developed a fever after arriving in the Chinese territory and was isolated in stable condition Saturday.
  14. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090430/pl_af...omyuschinabonds WASHINGTON (AFP) ¨C China, wary of the troubled US economy, has already "canceled America's credit card" by cutting down purchases of debt, a US congressman said Thursday. China has the world's largest foreign reserves, believed to be mostly in dollars, along with around 800 billion dollars in US Treasury bonds, more than any other country. But Treasury Department data shows that investors in China have sharply curtailed their purchases of bonds in January and February. Representative Mark Kirk, a member of the House Appropriations Committee and co-chair of a group of lawmakers promoting relations with Beijing, said China had "very legitimate" concerns about its investments. "It would appear, quietly and with deference and politeness, that China has canceled America's credit card," Kirk told the Committee of 100, a Chinese-American group. "I'm not sure too many people on Capitol Hill realize that this is now happening," he said.
  15. Yes......It seems recently they are requesting DNA more and more. We had custody papers, a letter from the father and all of the certificates so it came as a surprise to us that they wanted DNA. The process is not difficult but it does take time. You have to select and pay for the DNA lab here in the USA first. They fed ex the swab kit to the consulate. Once the consulate has the kit you can call for an appointment to have the swab done by the consulate physician but they schedule them in order of received so what we found out was they were very backlogged. As you can see it took two months for his appointment........once the swab is done (stepson's in China, Hers here in USA) they are sent to the lab here in the USA, tested and the results sent back to the consulate. We are now waiting for the consulate to process the results and i hope it is quicker then the wait for the swab. Are you in the same boat? If so I hope they have reduced their backlog. We are in the process of petitioning stepson. To have to make two trips to GUZ land with yan being in the US and working two jobs would be a real pain.Yan has family in ChengDu but it would be difficult for them also.
  16. The Chinese government's decision this month to let exporters in a small number of cities settle their overseas trade in yuan rather than in US dollars has far-reaching implications, according to economists, even though the immediate impact is minimal. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China_Business/KD21Cb01.html
  17. It took about two months just to get him into the consulate to have the swab done Was this delay due to GUZ and their time table?
  18. I wonder if it is a loss of face with this other teacher or a money issue as mentioned in the above post. I have some friends who taught at the international school in Tianjin. They mentioned once that pay was determined by the university you went to and even where you lived.Maybe she was in the top pay grade until you entered the school. Now her status is lower. http://www.amazon.com/River-Town-Years-Yan...4336&sr=1-1 This is a good book on teaching in china .
  19. Yan is attending a community college here in ny state. The college wanted her transcripts from her high school in ChengDu. That high school is not running today. Her University could not be bothered as far as obtaining a transcript. (20 years ago). No help what so ever. She did have her diploma from both places. We had both translated at a university in rochester ny and the community college did approve this as proof . Maybe we still run into problems if she wants a 4 year degree. She did have to take several tests and passed better than most native students. If we had not been approved she would have had to take her GED. to get into the community college.

  22. http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90776/90882/6621164.html Public Security: China begins gun crackdown to ensure social stability + - 17:05, March 24, 2009 China has launched a crackdown on gun crimes to ensure social stability, the Ministry of Public Security said Tuesday in an online statement. The campaign, which started March 20 and will end Oct. 31, includes confiscating illegal weapons, preventing gun crimes and supervising the use of guns. The ministry urged public security departments to confiscate illegally traded guns "and seize groups or individuals illegally making guns." The statement said the ministry hoped the campaign would "significantly reduce" crimes related to illegal guns and ensure that no "severe" cases occurred. Source:Xinhua
  23. Good write up. I have a friend who is going through the 10 year mess for them. Wife never worked. Never got a drivers licence. Nor even learners permit. They still live with the elderly mother rent free. Hired a lawyer and he did not even advise written letters from people who know them as a couple. Needless to say now they are questioning the marriage.(RFE) big time. Lawyer did a piss poor job in my opinion. But I would also fault the couple for not knowing exactly what they should have been collecting over the last 2 years. An example would be you cannot produce photos you never made. Job well done Have a long and happy life.
  24. Yan is from ChengDu and has said that after the earth quake. Management worked on collecting money for the survivors within the former company.Has this happened at your place of work after a natural disaster. The only thing we do here is blame Bush for every disaster. On the disabled issues life is hard in many parts of china . People realize many scams abound from people begging. I have seen it myself. Children begging for money and if you sit for a drink on the street you see them working other tourist and after getting money they run to maybe their mother to give her the change. Laughing all the while.
