  1. Hi, Don't know if anyone has any experience in such things but I am trying to research a few things. My wife's nephew was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few months ago. Surgeon in China will not give him a date on when the surgery might happen but says it might not be for a year or more! So we want to bring him here to have this resolved as he is worried that the care he will receive there is not going to be as it would be in the USA. And also, afraid that in a year the cancer could and most likely will spread to other areas. Question is has anyone had any experience in getting medical insurance for a Chinese national here in the states with a pre-existing issue? Just starting to delve into this and thought with the knowledge base the people in this site have that someone might have dealt with such things. Thank you so much for any thoughts! Marc
  2. My adult stepdaughter will be getting her green in the next few months (God willing!). She will arrive in USA without a job and will be too old to be covered as a dependent on my work health insurance. i am sure many people have faces the same situation with parents, brothers and sisters in law, adult children. Until she can find a job with insurance benefits I will need to arrange medical insurance. How are you assuring medical insurance coverage? > Do you do this through Obama-care? My reading is the immigrant may be eligible for an income subsidy. > Who do you contact? I have no experience with Obama-car.? Any good personal insurance packages you have found? > Or any to be avoided because you have had claims problems? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks True Blue
  3. Hello, My wife had a successful interview experience recently for the CR-1 process, and now we are going back to the states. However, she is pregnant and the baby is due in February. We want to get health insurance ASAP when we get back to the states. Does anyone have experience with a similar situation? Can we apply without an SSN, or if not, will that take long to get one? Since we have a limited window of time to take care of everything, I'm just trying to find the quickest way to arrange everything in time. I know there's a one month window in which I can apply for health insurance upon her arrival to the US, but I think that requires an SSN which I sincerely hope won't be an issue getting relatively quickly. I checked off on her forms that we wanted to receive the SSN card once we arrive back in the US, but from some posts I have seen previously I recall it doesn't always happen quickly, which I am worried the window may not be open by the time it's received.
  4. Hi, I hope this is the appropriate forum for this question. My wife's mom is planning a 5 month visit from Shanghai. (We live in 15 minutes from San Francisco) Since we got married, her mom has been here every 1.5-2 years, and stays for 2 months. Each time she visits, I get stressed for the obvious reasons, but another source of stress is her mom's insurance, or lack thereof. She's 59, and overall, has health is good, but her blood pressure is on the high side. What i always worry about is if she falls, hurts her back, or an unforeseen accident. Over 70% of bankruptcies are due to medical reasons, I looked into traveller's insurance and it costs about $725. Therefore I wanted to seek advice from the wise members, what do you guys do when your inlaws visit for an extended period of time? Thanks, Don

    Retirement

Hi, Don't know if this is where such a question should be posted but here goes. Will be retiring in a couple years and the plan is to live in China for the most part. When I get really old to just live there. Was wondering if anyone has information about health/medical insurance while living there. I'm assuming insurance you have here in the States will not do any good in China. Medicare? AARP? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Just want to make sure I have coverage. Wife's insurance there I don't think will cover me. But as I said, any help or thoughts would be great. THANKS and have a great day! Marc
  6. My wife and I will be going to California from Xi'an to stay, perhaps many years. But recently my wife developed a serious shoulder problem. We already have the CR-1 green card. My question is this: What are the insurance options for my wife? Initially, based on the last-year's tax return, we will be very low income. The way I see things, my wife may eventually need surgery to resolve the shoulder problem, followed by physical therapy. That can get very expensive if not insured. Thank you, Kevin & Amanda
  7. Hi, My wife's daughter is coming back for a short time then going back (I-131) because she's been accepted into a university in Hangzhou. Was wondering if any of you have some experience you would share with getting some medical insurance for such a situation. My company won't allow her to be put on our plan (24 years old). Thanks!
  8. Howdy all, When did you all add your spouses to your healthcare plan? I'm working on signing up for subsidized healthcare on Healthcare.gov to take advantage of those sweet sweet Premium Tax Credits but my wife doesn't yet have an Alien ID number, tax ID, or SSN... We're actually still present in China and will probably be sticking around until the summer, but I'd like to establish healthcare for the sake of evidence for establishing domicile during my wife's IV interview. Any thoughts? Thanks, guys! Peace, Jake
  9. Anyone have experience in getting health insurance once arriving in America due to the new laws?
  10. My father-in-law will be arriving next Saturday for a 5 and a half month visit. All along I have planned on buying him visitor's medical insurance. He is 64 years old, I am trying to decide between two policies 1. For ~$1000 I can but a policy with an intiial $1000 deductible, a 10% co-pay up to $5000 and then 100% up to a max benefit to $500,000 2 For ~$700, I can buy a policy with an initial $5000 deductible, then 100% to $500,000 Here is my question, has anyone ever bought one of these policies and tried to use them. They both have a pre-existing condition exclusion and I suspect for any type of routine care they would argue it was pre-existing. Just writing out the cost, the first policy seems to make more sense if you can actually use it for routine care So ultimately, this would be only for an accident or something like a heart attack. Looking if anyone has had experience with buying this type of medical insurance and whether it is good for anything but true catastrophic care. A Chinese friend actually told me he does not buy anything because if needed, you go to the emergency room and ultimately my wife and I would not be responsible for my father-in-law's medical bills. However, if the need arises I believe my father-in-law would get better care if he had some form of insurance. Thoughts?
  11. Hello, recently I have been thinking about the medical care that is available in China. How good is it? Is their hospital care on top of it. Is it first rate? Are they good in treating serious problems such as heart problems and cancer. At work last night I was reading an article on an incident that happened in Gansu province. It was a little scary. I couldn't find the same article today but here a link that tells about the incident: http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1557217/china-seals-entire-city-gansu-after-resident-dies-bubonic-plague Last night I was probably attracted to the article because the use of the word bubonic in it. When I was searching for the article today many of the articles on the net used the term pneumonic plague. I thought that the bubonic plague was something that occurred 500 600 years ago. There were several interesting points made in the articles. "The nine-day quarantine period ends tomorrow.......... Authorities began sealing off the area on Wednesday last week, when the patient died in a local hospital. The isolation period was set at nine days on advice from doctors, Xinhua reported." I wonder how long it would have taken to have a quarantine set up in the US. The other thing that I thought was interested that this story started about 10 days ago. CNN and other news organizations only started to report this incident yesterday. I am more interested in the quality of health care in China but I thought the plague story was in interesting also so I decided to combine both stories. Has anyone had to deal with cancer and the it's treatment or heart issues in China? Danb
  12. What if my fiancee has a pre-existing medical condition when she arrives in the U.S. Most health insurance companies love to deny coverage based on such things unless the person had previous health insurance. Does China have the notion of health insurance? Does it qualify as previous coverage when applying for benefits? Does the Affordable Care Act (ACA) not prevent insurance companies from denying coverage? I was just curious if anyone else had experience with this set of issues. Thanks, -scovitz
  13. Hi All, I've been through the discussions on the forum about obtaining medical insurance as I continue to live in China, and although there was some good information, there were no real recommendations. The "travel insurance" I've been on for the past 2 years is up next week, and instead of renewing, I'm thinking about going in a different direction. I've never had to put the coverage to use, but whenever I've contacted the company with questions they have never been that helpful. To be honest, I would be expecting a battle if I were to try and make a claim. Also, next month I turn 30. No no no, I'm taking the occasion in stride, but at the same time, I can tell a difference in my body now from what it was 10 years ago, never know when things can take a turn for the worse........ ..........and as such, I've been trying to find a solid company to buy coverage through. "Travel insurance" would be alright, but I'm more apt to purchase an affordable not-break-the-bank type of actual "medical coverage" plan that covers my bases should things go south. These are the two companies I'm looking at now: http://www.iexpatriatehealthinsurance.com/ http://www.medexassist.com/Default.aspx But to be honest, I don't really have any reason to choose these two companies other than their websites were easiest to use......yeah, that sounds pretty bad, but most of these expat insurance programs seem the same. I know lots of people receive medical coverage through their jobs, but as that is not an option for me currently, just checking in with all of you. Any suggestions or companies any of you have used before? Thanks in advance! dan~
  14. My friend is coming to the U.S. very soon and I just remembered that she might want or she might need visitor's medical insurance. I have a few questions: is this something she should show when passing through immigration at the port of entry? Then, is this something I can purchase for her and send to her to print to have on hand? I forgot about this completely. Thanks, if anyone knows the procedure. I appreciate it Greg
  15. What a better time to bring this subject up but now! As our great country is in shut down mode and servers are crashing by the minute. Thought this is NOT the subject of this thread. This should be a very simple question and then maybe not. My wife (Zhenghong) has a life long friend here in the states (Maryland) and has some medical issues. Her friend (Mei) has been here in the U.S. for 7 years now and has her 10 year GC. She (Mei) came to America the same way all our wife/girls did. She was married to a U.S. citizen man and had her 2 year GC. Well like some, It didn't work out and of course, The marriage ended before the 10 year GC. Mei was able to over come the hoops and get her 10 year GC. Mei has been working from the day of marriage divorce. But four months ago she was layed off and has no income. She owns her house free and clear and only pays utility's. Now that were all up to speed about Mei's history here is the question at hand. (This is only hear say and from a second hand source) Mei has this friend (American Friend) that told her the if her GC is over 5 years she can get free health insurance. IMO: I have never heard of this other that our friends jumping over the fence down south. Anyone ever hear of free insurance for our Chinese GC holders? Mike
  16. Hello, I was wondering about affordable medical care in China. If I were to decide to retire (part time) in China what things should I consider about getting good and adequate care? How do Ex-Pats retiree's in China get medical care. Normal doctor visits for check ups and minor illnesses ae probably not a big problem. But what about things like long term medicines and major medical illnesses? Say if we decide to split our time between the US and China. Say 50-50 or 35-65 of the time. What do people do? How do you plan for major medical issues? Danb PS I looked around but did't find this topic.
  17. Hello guys! Me and my wife will be going back to the USA sometime in November. I will be looking for a job when I get there, but something I've been thinking about is health insurance. Shes only 24, no health problems, so I was wondering if anyone has some recommendations? I've thought about just getting something for emergencies since I hope to get a job soon and have her covered anyways. If anyone was in a similar situation...let me know if you have any recommendations! (Going to Tennessee if that matters)
  18. I remember asking about costs for heath insurance once my wife arrived in the US and now that I have set up her insurance, I wanted to share the info with fellow CL'ers. FYI, I am retired and on medicare so I did not have the benefit of adding her to an employers insurance policy. I had to acquire a stand alone policy for her. Upon arrival to CA I set up visitors insurance for the wifey from a web site (http://www.insubuy.com) to cover a possible emergency. This cost was about $350 for 3 months. I spoke with my local insurance agent in CA to set up her permanent health insurance. Before the regular health insurance could be attained she had to be a resident in CA for 3 months which is the reason for the visitors insurance package. I was able to get an Anthem/Blue Cross policy ($1,000 deductible) for under $225/mth which blew me away as I was expecting to pay upwards of $400/mth based on web searches. I hope this information is of help for those with questions about health insurance. Please note that this is for health insurance in California. Mike
  19. Is a social security number needed for health insurance. In order to list my wife under my plan, the insurance company is asking for her SS#.
  20. Limei and my daughter and I are moving to China this late summer. Limei will be forfeiting her green card. I have to return to the U.S. twice a year for my business so I will operate with visas. What are our options for health insurance for the girls in China? With a one year old baby we definitely need good health care. Anyone have experience with this? Rob
  21. Dear All, My parents are coming to US as immigrants. I would like to purchase health insurance for them. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations. I really appreciate! Best wishes, Hailong
  22. Hi, Since I will have a fairly expensive surgery in January (Cataracts) we have been discussing health insurance in the USA and costs without it. So, our daughter will graduate from college with a business degree in less than 3 years. I am about 6 years away from Medicare age. How can I take care of my wife (15 years younger) when this happens? I expect our daughter to be able to get a job with health benefits before age 25 when she can no longer be covered by my employer. -James
  23. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/p...D=2009906300343 On the Lou Dobbs show recently, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Council and Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. of the High Impact Leadership Coalition were confronted with the policy choice of whether to give emergency treatment to a 3-year-old undocumented child. Dobbs pushed a trade-off between "covering citizens and illegal immigrants.'' Rodriguez said that illegal immigrants should be covered; Jackson said they should not be treated the same as citizens, but then suggested he wouldn't turn the child away. I suspect most Americans agree with Jackson. But what about for legal immigrants? Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch of Utah and Mike Enzi of Wyoming have an answer: Restrict them. Their proposal would require that immigrants not be eligible for any new government health benefits until they have been legally in the country for five years. Something to chew on I am off to work
  24. I just went full time at my new job, and during the probation period, they don't pay for benefits. There is the option of using COBRA, but they want over $700 a month for the two of us, and we are very low risk. I'm now looking at buying my own health insurance for the next 2 months, but they all seem to have the eligibility limitation of being a U.S. citizen, being a foreign citizen that has lived in the U.S for over a year, or being a Green card holder. My wife is none of these right now. How can I get health insurance then? Thanks in advance, xiaobu
  25. My fianee and her 18 month old daughter will soon undergo the K1/K2 interview at Guangzhou. Looking beyond the interview, I am concerned about health insurance for the 2 of them during the period of time that begins when they board the plane in China and ends with the wedding in the USA. I am covered under a group health plan through my employer and will be able to extend coverage to the 2 of them once we are married. But obviously my employer's plan won't cover them before we are married. How have others dealt with this issue? Thanks.
