When I was at our AOS interview I mentioned about making a copy of the green card. I was told VERY clearly that it was against the law for me to make any copy of the green card.If yan went in for a job and was hired for certain it would be copied.......just tossing this out for us to chew on a bit.....

yan and I were at a dinner saterday night and talked with a man and his wife who grew up in Hong Kong. He has been here for about 40 years. Has a degree from Georgetown. He worked in DC for a while and now is here in upstate NY.He said it is boring here. Side walks fold up at 10.....He said in HongKong or Shanghai people wait until 10pm to go out and see something. The city never sleeps.

You can open up a can of worms with this question. Many years ago I hired a lawyer to do a k-1 visa and he was a real shyster... took me for a lot of money. I would not post his name on any board as the fear of a lawsuit....There are members of the legal profession who are members of this board and they could offer good advise as to what to look for. What questions to ask in your hunt for a good one if you feel you may need one. The first thing my "lawyer" informed me was by using him I could speed up the process...He knew who to call and could get through to a person of "a higher level" to move the case along . That was a big smoke screen. No lawyer can speed your case up. Some even make mistakes and slow it down. Going through this process I have found out that unless there are some "issues" in dealing with your case. An example would be a student overstay of your intended .You should be able to do this yourself and save several thousand of dollars. Many times people have mentioned that by using this board and this board http://www.visajourney.com/forums/ you can do it yourself if you have the time . Most of this immigration stuff is leg work done by you.....getting your birth certificate, employment letter ect.. You fill out the forms or your lawyer does this for you....for a price. This said some people feel better having a lawyer handle everything. You collect your needed information. Give it to your lawyer along with a check. ( the fee seems all over the board. )$1500-2500 may be a good range for a k-1 case.My shyster lawyer was recomended to me by a friend and he charged me $5000 and never did finish the paperwork and he wanted another $5000 to file the paperwork for the child to join. I am sure many others will join in this discussion. This board is here to get you through this. Just ask questions and use the search button on this board. We also need to know at what stage you are in . Are you in China ,the US,have you even met yet.

A week to go before our 1st meeting
lostinblue replied to a topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
If you are a large man I would not count on buying many clothes in china very easy. If it is cold where you are going to be bring some warm clothes. Think ice fishing for four or five hours and dress like that. almost every thing you do will be in the cold. A lot of places you will go to eat might not have windows and the cold just blows in . This all depends upon your travel plans. I have been on the great wall in January. it was a bit brisk -

I registered it was a 5-10 minute deal. No biggie time wise. Sent the stamped receipt when I sent in K-1 as further proof we met.I had a Chinese teacher who strongly advised to have it done. Her reason was if a neighbor has bad blood with your SO then they could cause a great deal of trouble. -

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CHI...-01-25-11-25-01 China Halts Coal Exports Amid Shortage By ELAINE KURTENBACH AP Business Writer SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- The coldest, snowiest winter in decades has left millions of Chinese without heating and running water, leading the government on Friday to order a suspension of coal exports as the country struggles to meet its power needs. The Transport Ministry's emergency notice, posted on its Web site, warned of "severe" consequences for failing to comply with the order, which will stay in effect through the Lunar New Year holiday in February and the annual session of the national legislature in early March. The notice ordered railways and other transport networks to make hauling coal and food a priority over coming weeks. Ocean shippers should stop loading coal for export and divert shipments "for domestic thermal coal requirements," if needed. It was unclear what amount of coal shipments would be affected for China, the world's biggest coal producer. The country's economic planning agency on Wednesday ordered utility companies and coal suppliers to cooperate in fighting power shortages that have forced more than a dozen provinces to ration electricity. Chronic wintertime shortfalls of coal, used to fuel three-quarters of China's electricity supply, have been aggravated by unusually heavy snow disrupting transport networks. The energy shortages are expected to continue, with forecasts predicting prolonged cold weather and more snowfall for many regions of central and southern China. In some areas, the snow has damaged power grids. Storms felled three power transmission towers Wednesday along a major line of the massive Three Gorges Dam, disrupting a link in central China's transmission system, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Coal shortages have worsened due to friction over prices for coal and electricity. China's domestic prices of coal and crude oil rose 14.2 percent and 35 percent year-on-year, respectively, in December, the central bank said in a statement posted on its Web site Friday. Meanwhile, electricity prices rose only 2.1 percent. Utilities have chafed at caps on electricity rates that prevent them from passing the higher costs for coal on to customers. Coal suppliers are pushing for higher prices. The Transport Ministry notice said state-owned shipper Cosco Holdings Co. Ltd. was hauling emergency shipments of 760,000 tons of coal to help bridge the gap between faltering supply and soaring demand. China exported 53 million tons of coal in 2007, down 16 percent from 2006, while imports rose 34 percent to 51 million tons. Net coal exports dropped to just over 2 million tons from 25 million tons in 2006. Total damage from the prolonged cold temperatures and snow so far is estimated at $864 million, Xinhua reported.

You did not state if you got your ssn#?? In Illinois it is temporary if you do not have your ssn# yet!! He got his SS# and EAD. So anyone in NY knows how it works here? Yan had her EAD valid for 1 year? then she received her green card.It took about 5 months for background check. I believe you will need a new EAD and license. Someone here can offer a timeline for EAD renewal ? from post below My wife arrived in SFO on Dec. 28th 2007 with K1 Visa.... No stamp on I-94. Got her SSN yesterday and mailed the AOS package today. Was told the EAD will take 4 months. Good luck. Best wishes, Gino & Lulu -

In the US on a student visa
lostinblue replied to shyaushu's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Wally everything boils down to intent.......when she entered the country with the visa she has. This has been debated a great deal on visa journey...If she or he entered the country with no intent to marry (go to school) and while she is here she decides to marry there is no fraud involved. She can marry and file the paperwork here and stay with no problem. From what has been discussed on visa journey it is best to be in the country more than 3 months before that decision is made to marry or it will raise eyebrows.come AOS time.If she entered this country with the intent to use the student visa to marry then fraud is involved. Of course she could get married here and go back to china and wait out the process there. Do a search on visa journey it has been discussed more than anything else at times. Every thing boils down to the intent entering the country. One example on visa journey was a student got married while in the US which was legal. She then returned home and entered again after vacation using the student visa . That was not a legal use of the student visa. She had plans to stay. She could get turned away. It is a grey area in dealing with the law. it all boils down to the intent the visa was used for. They could ask a lawyer to be certain. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;#entry755342 -

What is investigated about the American
lostinblue replied to jhammer's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
http://candleforlove.com/forums/index.php?...hl=income+level http://www.murthy.com/news/n_pov07.html Not interested in bankruptcy .They desire to see sustainable income. Being employed or having retirement income above the 125% poverty level is desireable. Under that level you need assets (5 times the amount lacking in income level)or a co-sponser. no need to own a home. If you are 125% above poverty level no need to list assets. -
Have her get in touch with a few wives on candle that are living in the US. They will fill her in on things she will need to know.

This will happen all over the globe. An article I read years ago stated that in the future wars will be fought over the control of water and water will be more important than oil.If you go back in history the southwest at one time had a 500 year drought. Water could change the geopoltical structure of the world .
