  4. my work's insurance requires a ss from my wife, never asked why, but i think the insurance is making sure it is insuranring the right person.
  5. david, sorry for the denied visa, mother-in-law can be very helpful with wendy's expected baby. we are in the process of applying a visa for my wife's mother so she can help with my wife's baby in november. mother-in-law supplies alot of evidence to show her financial ties to china, husband in china, job in china, and a son in china, so keeping our fingers crossed. ***side note*** i read your blog and notice you are going for you ccna, good luck and it is worth it. i have an expired ccna now and working for the new york city hospitals. we are in charge of 5 campus networks in nyc with over 300 cisco switches (4500s) and 50 routers. you may download the software, http://www.gns3.net/, for studying tools, its a graphical network sims. good luck and happy routing.

  12. So far so good. Today Fengjie got her green card. She did not understand what it was until I got someone to tell her in Chinese. So it is all good now. Today when I came home from work she had cleaned the garage. She is just that kind of woman. How are you to doing? Life in America is different for the both of us. Michael Glad to hear things are going well. We have settled in nicely and like any married couple have our share of disagreements. Cleaning is not her forte my wife is not into cleaning too i have to remind her almost every day to clean as you work/cook/anything. she makes a big mess when cooking dinner and i get so upset because i do the cleaning after dinner. i showed her how i cook but she never follows my footsteps. i like to send her back to china for more training B)

  14. I thought the MIN Wage in NY was $7.25/hr? yes, the min wage in ny is 7.25/hr but she was working in a chinese business and they dont take taxes out, all cash transactions. its the same for most resturants in chinatown and very common too. this is one way an owner can take advantage of you where the wokers dont know english and the law, and most workers need the money so they keep quiet and go with the flow. life goes on. edit: i meant my wife do not pay any taxes. Kind of a pisser for those of us who pay taxes per the law ... i hear you...what can you do...people in chinatown been doing it over 100 years...they run their business their way with no outsiders.
  15. any reasons why not use cathay pacific airlines? i always use it and found it around 850 to 1000 R/T, service was nice and flight attendents are always top notch. the cheapest was 770 R/T 4 years ago. on my last trip, i was bumped to first class because of overbooking on economy class and accumulated 85,000 points so far. i used 40,000 to san fran R/T in march. cathay is partnered with AA so you can earn miles as well.

  17. my wife was working in a chinese bakery store in nyc chinatown. she was earning 3 dollars per hour, 7am to 6 pm, monday off - no benefits at all, only free lunch and all the coffee/tea/cold drinks and bakery you can eat. she did it for 3 months and quite. she is now learning ELS in a community center, free tuition. its very hard to find work when you cant speak/understand english. she is doing well, picking up english and speak in simple full sentences. she has a long way to go. its 1 year and 3 weeks that she is here in nyc.

  20. HR is the first line of defense and i found your HR is 100% useless. how can HR says it the supervisor's problem. i would take it outside of the company such as labor dept in your area. good luck.
  21. is this a union place? you may need a shop steward when you talk to that person.
  22. what irony!!! i just had an annual mandatory 1 day training on workplace harassment. from this link, http://www.fcc.gov/owd/understanding-harassment.html Workplace Harassment is a Form of Discrimination Unlawful harassment is a form of discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other federal authority. Unwelcome verbal or physical conduct based on race, color, religion, sex (whether or not of a sexual nature and including same-gender harassment and gender identity harassment), national origin, age (40 and over), disability (mental or physical), sexual orientation, or retaliation (sometimes collectively referred to as ¡°legally protected characteristics¡±) constitutes harassment when: 1.The conduct is sufficiently severe or pervasive to create a hostile work environment; or 2.A supervisor¡¯s harassing conduct results in a tangible change in an employee¡¯s employment status or benefits (for example, demotion, termination, failure to promote, etc.). i would go to your HR dept first and reported it, they would know what to do in these cases. good luck.
