  1. I was in Yantai and Penglai but they didn't call cicada seafood there They had very interesting sea creatures in pails and tubs at each restaurant. The fancy places used aquariums. You got to pick and I had very interesting as well as tasty snails and mollusks.
  2. No but I hear they are very healthy food. Are they on menus or is that home cooking? What areas?
  3. Lee was it the worm stage or the pupae or chrysalis stage? I've had the roasted pupae and have heard they also serve the worm. At a really nice Shenyang restaurant we had great food and I was told my So had ordered her favorite dish and I must try it. That was the chrysalis which I ate a few of but she polished off the plate witrh gusto. I was surprised how large they were.
  4. Nah, Hollywood is on the next hill from here.
  5. triplicate removed computer glitch. Really, it was. I didn't just figure out a way to add two posts contrary to anything the others may say.
  6. It seems a financed Terrorist organization would take the time and effort to send in agents through countries where there would be less scrutiny. In the case of China I think we are facing detection of visa fraud with large numbers of applications and limited processing by trained officers who preferably speak Mandarin/Cantonese. From descriptions of new VOs it seems there are more Chinese Americans interested in the job now. Just a billy goat observation.
  7. Actually most came through Canada, Germany and France
  8. Trigg aren't you scaring people away with the title of this thread before they even read it? So I'm limited to 10,000 words? Better start now reducing the word count.
  9. Yea, those damned goats ruin everything! hehehehe Mmaaaaaa http://www.georgetown.edu/faculty/ballc/an...imals/goat.html
  10. What no Tai Qi, Qi Gung or Kung Fu?? How about Majong? I have to learn the game quick.
  11. So did it taste like chicken ? North of Beijing all the restaurants had donkey on the menu.
  12. I wonder what would happen if you set the region and primary language as China, Chinese and open with an MS application. Let us know if you find any possibilities other than suggested in this thread. Chinese language capabilities will be a major concern in regards to my home computer soon.
  13. B) Congratulations B) The week is off to a good start.
  14. The "swastika" is one of those universal symbols used in various cultures both left and right facing from prehistory. The swasticka has thus appeared in different forms, in different places and for different reasons, in human culture since pre-historic times. The meaning has been a "Wheel of Life," a "Sun-Wheel," the four points of the compass, the four winds, Man himself, a symbol of the Hopi emergence into the current world (showing the directions taken by the various tribes in their wanderings) ... many, many interpetations have been given to this most ancient symbol. It can be found with both right-angled arms, and with curved arms rather like two letters "S" superimposed at right-angles to each other. It's wide distribution in so many varying cultures shows quite conclusively that it is neither an "Aryan" nor a non-"Aryan" symbol, the pretensions of the NSDAP (German Nazi Party) and their descendants notwithstanding. The Oriental interpetation has been that of a "Sun-Wheel," with the right-handed version being for "life" or the Sun, and the left-handed version being for "death" or the Moon. "right handed" ------> Sunwise (deasil) rotation (heraldic default position) "left handed" <------ Widdershins rotation (heraldic reversed position) It is interesting to note that the original designer of the insignia of the NSDAP, Dr. Freidrich Krohn (see below), initially drew it right-handed, but Hitler insisted on its being changed to the left-handed version.
  15. Looks like this will be a major invasion of Portland on multiple fronts.
  16. Doesn't your wife know the age old custom of match making.? Let her find a husband for her niece. By the time they settle on one and file the niece will be out of college and ready.
  17. Any statement from a doctor that adds health reasons for visiting can't hurt the chances. I would also include the issue that the doctor mentions for needing the visit in your letter. Use the doctor's letter to reinforce your statements. In most cases unless a person was seeking American medical treatment or needed to care for the person in the U.S. (such as during a difficult pregnancy) I doubt that it does much more than add to the appeal for a visa. More important seems to be the evidence showing they must return at the end of the visa. As Tony just pointed out, stress the return rather than reason for going. Property, other children, grandchildren, job or business and etc. Interestingly Israelis and Europeans do not have to demonstrate this beyond a doubt only swear to it. Where I live many Israelis and Armenians have brought over permanently extended families this way. Ok that's another thread but the anti Asian appearance of application of policy gets me.
  18. Swedish proverb Worry gives a small thing a big shadow. The friends as brothers seems to be a big thing in China. I wonder if it is more important for the only child or is it everything. My friend's wife wanted to make sure he would not get mad if she goes out with men friends some times. Of course he reacted with "to do what". She was looking for an affirmation of trust and got mad. It was the supposition that something she would do might be wrong. In talking to a Chinese male friend of mine I was told "What does it matter, I am the husband and he is a friend. He also said that in China this can lead to big fights for some couples and some men try to keep their wives at home. With us it is often made worse by the use of English. "I went to the movie with my friend and he said". Me: "How do you know this man?" Her: "No silly my schoolhood friend Mei, you know him." " Oh yes I've met her." I have had some quick breaths at times when she has been to the bath house with "he". The gender pronouns are hard to keep straight. I mention it because this adds to the number of times and activities we add up for the male friends. I don't know where the address was that she sent to, but I have had friends ask me to send to work 1) because the home apartment gets many wrong deliveries and work is easier for the post. 2) There is no where to leave a package at home during the day so they will have to make arrangements to pick it up. 3) Delivery is day time when people are at work and no one home to receive. 3) Packages delivered while not there get stolen or used by relatives. Don't let worry over shadow your relationship.
  19. Ok so it will be California formal then. I'll bring socks and shoes.
