  1. Represent seems to roll of the tongue better. -- My test based on my use of language is --which one sounds better. So represent in this sentence sounds better. And I actually like cry at the top of their lungs -- it conveys the meaning more forcefully than just saying cried loudly. Just my opinion.
  2. We now do self-transfer when we fly to Wuhan. There is now a direct flight there from San Francisco on China Southern. But to get there we fly United from Eugene to San Francisco. We check in at Eugene and then in San Francisco we go downstairs and get our luggage and then check in again at San Francisco. It is a hassle to go through security twice so leave plenty of time between flights. But having a nonstop flight to Wuhan is worth the trouble.
  3. If you ever need any ideas on how to deal with challenging behaviors exhibited by some of the students let me know. I may be able to be of some help. My background is in Special Education.
  4. My folks retired to Caucus and I have a brother living in Morro Bay -- bother nice central Ca. coastal towns. Eugene gets a lot more rain but has a high quality life. Housing prices are still good here but starting to go up so now is the time to buy.
  5. Hi Catherine, CNA training is a good thing to start with. Liwen did that when she first got here and actually worked at a residential facility for a short time. We later opened a foster home for adults with intellectual disabilities that she ran and having the CNA experience made it easier to get licensed to do that. She is now in her third job - business manager for my small company where she is pretty much her own boss. But like you re doing, she took her time, gained experiences and more fluency with English and more comfort with American culture. So keep up the slow transition and I am sure you will find the work that suits your needs.
  6. There is nothing wrong with a community college job. I have several friends who prefer working at the community college level rather than the university. But community colleges are moving more and more to part time workers to save on benefits. So if you can get a job there with benefits, I would go for it.
  7. I am currently using WiTopia VPN and have had no problems connecting in Wuhan.
  8. You don't rebuke the fear -- you accept the fear and get on with your life. Fear is like quicksand. The harder you fight, the more it traps you. Mindfulness -- awareness and acceptance of the fear while taking valued action is the key.
  9. Take lots of short trips on safe non busy streets first. Then gradually extend the distance you go and the type of stress you drive on. But do it frequently -- lots and lots of driving trips. It is called systematic desensitization of fears. Make a hierarchy of streets and times e.g. two blocks on neighbors streets when traffic is low three blocks -- low traffic two blocks medium traffic four blocks low traffic four blocks medium traffic two lane highway during quiet time of day etc, etc. until you can drive busy streets anytime
  10. I figure anytime I can get my tickets from Eugene to Shanghai or Beijing for around a thousand dollars it is the time to buy. So I just got tickets for late January for Shanghai for $1,110. I am flying United. Liwen has enough frequent flier miles to fly free this year and I will have enough miles for a free ticket next year. So for two of us it is only costing $550 each
  11. We go back once a year at spring festival. Liwen stays longer -- I stay 3 to 4 weeks and she usually stays two months. I have an office in our apartment there and am able to do most of my work pretty well.
  12. I use my unlocked ATT 5s for every trip to China -- I like China Mobile -- never a problem
  13. great idea! Maybe now they can change the name of economy to economy plus so we feel like we have more space.
  14. I use Straight talk for my cell phone at $45 for unlimited calling nationwide and have Vonage world for our calls to china at $27 a month. Like both services and have had no problem with either. Switched to Straight Talk fromT-Mobile -- better coverage and price. I liked T-Mobile when I had it.
  15. Congratulations! My wife will be starting the process next month and I hope it is smooth sailing
  16. I have ridden the bus many times from the main terminal to terminal 1 to transfer to a domestic flight to Wuhan. last week we arrived and my wife had booked China Air which is right there in terminal 3 -- the lines were long but it is so so much easier to stay in the main terminal when catching the domestic flight
  17. We are in Wuhan now for spring festival. The park near us has many young couples getting wedding pictures taken.
  18. I have bought both and ended up using Pimsleur in my car and not using Rosetta much at all. I now use ChinesePod online as my main study learning tool. Marty
  19. Basically is my favorite too
