  1. My Ex-pat contract is coming to an end. To make sure that we have enough luggage Yuan packed almost everything yesterday to make sure we have enough space, good idea. She weighed each bag to not exceed 23 kg. Also a good idea, but the bags were about to burst at the seams from her overfilling them. I stupidly said why not buy another bag to ensure that we have no zippers fail from being overstuffed. My company is paying for the excess luggage fees so we would only be out the 120RMB for the cost of the bag. She had a conniption fit worthy of commentary from Bill Cosby. I have learned enough that I just shrugged and said just an idea. Do other Chinese woman not understand that when you overstress things that they tend to break and or wear out faster?
  2. Below is ..... NOT- I give up. I'm not high tech enough to successfully either link, copy or paste the table.... a table detailing the baggage allowances for my wife's current trip. Please note that she is none of these: "At the time of check in with Delta, SkyMiles Medallion members, SkyTeam Elite & Elite Plus, Alaska MVP & MVP Gold and active US Military personnel are eligible for fee waivers and other benefits." Her baggage allowance: She is flying on a mileage ticket, in coach, which makes her status lower than dirt. Please know there is an ironic discrepancy- from Tampa to New York she has to pay for a 2nd bag. From JFK to China via Narita, Japan she gets two free bags on each leg. The return- more irony. She is authorized one free International bag from Beijing to Detroit and two free bags from Detroit to Tampa. Go figure. Further, my wife has found that it is required, within China, to have this baggage table printed out and in-hand with your ticket information. Then, when you get to the check in counter in your small Chinese town, you will invariably be forced to speak to a supervisor for two reasons. 1. Your International flight is within 24 hours (must force them to acknowledge time and date change on the inbound domestic portion). This gets you 2 free bags domestically. 2. You need to show, in writing, what your bagge allowance is. You must prove that you are allowed 2 free bags Internationally. Why- Because she always wins the argument and gets her two free bags domestically. missing table was to be here..... 1On Delta operated flights, you may carry on one bag and a small personal item at no charge. Carry-on allowances may differ and fees may apply for flights operated by carriers other than Delta. Contact the operating carrier for detailed carry-on limitations and charges. BusinessElite/First/Business Class weight allowance reverts to 50 lbs for all checked bags beyond regular free allowance. At the time of check in with Delta, SkyMiles Medallion members, SkyTeam Elite & Elite Plus, Alaska MVP & MVP Gold and active US Military personnel are eligible for fee waivers and other benefits. For more details, visit delta.com/baggage. Basic Cardmembers with a Gold, Platinum, or Reserve Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express are eligible for the first bag fee waiver. More details on the program can be found at delta.com/firstbagfree. A standard checked bag with Delta may be up to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches (per piece). Additional fees apply for oversize, overweight, and/or additional pieces of checked baggage. Please review Delta's baggage guidelines for details. Weight and size restrictions may vary when checking baggage on carriers other than Delta. Contact with the operating carrier for detailed checked baggage allowances. Please note that this a customized baggage allowance taken directly from her ticket purchase confirmation e-mail. It is not from any Delta sponsored web page.
  3. Hello. I am leaving China from Nanning with a changeover in Beijing. After a short 2 hour stop it will be back to the land of french fries. I should remember but at the moment I can't. Do I have pick up my baggage in Beijing and have it reinspected or will my bag just be sent thru? I am flying Delta. I wish I could bring two bags back but as far as I can tell all I am allow is to have is one bag. The second bag wiil cost me 100 USD. Also as far I can tell I am also limited to 50 lbs on my first bag. Delta must be making on baggage supplements. There aren't any real people to talk to and when I go their site, the baggage page reads like legalize. No simply explanations from them. Must be the way they like it!!! All the way to the bank. What can I do? Danb
  4. UAL is increasing International baggge fees from $70 to $100. They have now double the price in just 2 years. So this will mean $100 x 2 for round trip. Service of course will not improve nor reduce the number of lost bags. This is pure greed by the airlines. http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2012/06/12/united-airlines-raises-bag-fees-to-100/
  5. I can't seem to get an answer from the airlines. The flight leaves Atlanta, stops in LA, then goes to GZ. China Southern is the airline but the first leg is operated by Delta. I called Delta but they could not answer my question. The number for China Southern is always busy. The question is.......how many bags can be checked and what weight can be checked for free.
  6. Hi Guys, Has anyone on here flown from a city in China with a connecting flight in Shanghai PVG to New York JFK using China Eastern Airlines? I have flown in the past, on Air China, from Dalian DLC to Beijing PEK to New York JFK. I check my luggage in Dalian and retrieve it in New York. My wife and son are scheduled to fly China Eastern from Dalian to Shanghai to New York. Someone told her she will have to retrieve her luggage in Shanghai and go through international security to get on the second China Eastern flight. Anyone have any information on this? She is planning on bringing 4 large suitcases, a carry-on, and a 7 year old. Thanks, Jeff
  7. My wife will be arriving from Beijing on July 10th. Beijing -Vancouver on Air Canada then Vancouver - Houston on Continental. Continetal threw me a little curve yesterday when they said my wife will pass USA customs in Vancouver, not Houston. Seems the point of entry will be Canada, I've never heard of this before. Continental told me that my wife's bags will be transferred from Air Canada to Continental automatically. When she leaves Beijing she wont see them again until she arrives in Houston. My question is, since the point of entry is now Vancover, how will customs check her bags? These bags apparently will not be in her possession. I want to make this as easy for her as I can with as little surprises to her as possible. Will USA customs process her after getting off the plane in Vancouver or before boarding the plane to Houston? Any RELIABLE thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appeciated! Steve
  8. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to my own question about whether or not Chinese Citizens can leave the Incheon Airport... the answer is no. US Citizens can, however, stay in South Korea visa free for up to 90 days. Anyway, I'm not going to go wandering around in Seoul alone with my Sweetie sitting in the airport. I guess we'll just have to skip out on the sightseeing. We're flying Asiana Airlines, we got a really good deal. From our local city airport here all the way to Chicago. The only catch is the layover in Incheon is from 5 am to 6pm. Reeealllyyy Boring. I hope Incheon is an interesting airport!! I was wondering if there's anyone who's flown with Asiana before? This is my first time. The website looks nice... esp. if it's true that each passenger in economy really does get their own tv to flip through... lol
  9. http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/01/12/delta...fees/index.html Fly Southwest or Jetblue to avoid first bag fees. Or fly non-USA carriers for international travels. I don't know about international baggage fees for domestic carriers.
  10. My fiance has a nice guitar, and we were really hope we could fly it over to the States with us, perhaps in exchange for one of our free checked baggage allowances... We called Asiana Airlines and they said they don't recommend checking your guitar into baggage because they won't pay for loss or damage, and if we wanted to bring the guitar as carry-on we'd have to buy it a ticketed seat!!! Anyone have experience flying their guitar? Should we just forget it and buy a new one in the States?
  11. Well, the time has come. My wife is leaving me for 6 months. I really have mixed emotions about this: part of me is saying YIPPEE! I can smoke cigars in the house again ; the other part of me is really blue . Anyway...it's a done deal. Here's what I found on the Delta site about baggage: Checked Baggage—International Currently when traveling to or from most cities outside the United States you can check two bags, per passenger at no extra charge. You can refer to the chart below for exceptions to the checked baggage policy. If you have additional bags to check, you may be charged excess baggage fees. Each bag must: · Weigh 50 pounds (23 kg) or less. · Not exceed 62 inches (157 cm) when you total length + width + height. From the chart….. The Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia – Economy Class: 2 checked bags. Each bag at a maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height) My reading comprehension is challenged by most Airline regulation fine print. What I took that to mean is that my wife gets to take 2 bags of properly sized, checked luggage weighing up to 50 pounds each at no additional charge. Do I need to return to remedial reading school or did I properly understand it?
  12. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Baggage-fees...385202.html?x=0 "Fees to check bags on international flights are creeping in and may be here to stay."
  13. I'm sure most airlines, especially international flights to and from china have similar rules. I have only ever used United (for my first leg) and Air China going to and they are pretty strict on the weight and how many bags you can take. United rules for Economy class are two checked bags 50 lbs each, one carry on and one personal item. Coming back from China, Air China counter representatives don't care so much about the weight, at least that has been my experience. Does anyone know of any other airlines going to China that have a little more of a relaxed rule on baggage weight from the US?
  14. Hi, does anyone know how many bags my wife is allowed to check in on "Air China" to USA.? thanks Jimi
  15. I am flying to LAX to meet my imigrant wife on August 12th. She emailed her arrival flight time to me and I booked air travel to LAX. Her email stated a 8:25am arrival time at LAX and I decided to check with Korean air to be sure. Well Korean air said her flight will land at 10:25am and I have booked air travel for us to depart LAX and fly home at 11:50am. Can anyone tell how long it takes to process through imigration and customs at LAX? Thanks, Ron & Jing
  16. Hey all, can anyone tell me what to expect at Hong Kong airport? My wife tells me that my baggage will be put on the ferry automaticlly, but I've looked at skypoint website and they say check the list to see if your airline does this. Mine (Continental) does not. So do I have to claim my suitcase, then buy ferry ticket, then get on bus, then ferry? I'm assuming signs will make it easy for me to find my way around? This is my first trip via Hong Kong so I'm not sure at all what to expect. Thanks .... Appaullo

  18. Not much is allowed. I think other airlines are cutting the baggage allowances too. ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.airchina.com.cn/en/lk/3_1.htm Passengers are entitled to a free baggage allowance: 40K for first class, 30K for business class, 20K for economy class. In addition to the free baggage allowance, these articles will be carried free: a lady's handbag, an overcoat, wrap or blanket, an umbrella or walking stick, a reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight, a small camera, a pair of binoculars, infant food and an infant carrying basket, a fully collapsible invalid's wheelchair and or a pair of crutches and/or braces or other prosthetic device for the passenger's use provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.
  19. My lao po has a lot of stuff. Mostly clothes. But tonight her parents gave us a bunch of things including a statue carving of an eagle, beautiful. But it is too big and delicate for a suitcase. What is the best and cheapest way to ship? UPS, Fed Ex, postal service. From Nanning. This has been covered before but can't find it right now. THANKS!
  20. My wife flew out of Boston today to JFK and then to HK, GZ, and then Nanning. The flight out of Boston is AA and the flight from JFK to HK is Cathay Pacific. As of March 1st this year, AA allows only up to 50 lbs per bag (2 bags max). Since my wife had two bags weighting over 57 lbs and 70 lbs, she had to pay $50 surcharge. Cathay Pacific allows 70 lbs per bag. United Airlines also allows only 50 lbs max too. I think China Southern Air will charge her for heavy bags too when she flies out from GZ to Nanning. So try to convince your gal to travel light.
  21. I just got back from a 'conjugal visit' with the wife in Chengdu. Too bad my oversized wedding picture didn't. Made it thru customs. Seems it got "lost' between SFO and PDX. I'm not sure how a clearly marked over-sized package could get lost. Pretty sure the replacement will be OK, but just curious if anyone else has lost any bags from China. After about a half million airmiles, this is my first lost bag. And since this was an international flight, the airline has a very low liability, a la $300 max (35lb x $9.07/lb). I am going to ask United for free travel instead of money. Any suggestions or ideas?
  22. Following the cracking and condemnation of Ling's apartment building, she was given five minutes to grab what she could. By the time she got out she had 49 kg of clothes and gifts from me (that girl's got her priorities straight!). The rest is gone for good. She made it out of Beijing and back to her parents in Chongqing where she will wait for P4. I'll fly through Hong Kong to GZ for the interview and then we'll both head back to Chicago. I figure we'll put ourselves under a self imposed quaratine for about a month I always like Beijing but I think it will be a long time before I see it again. Now if that pesky namecheck would go through we could get on with our lives.
