  1. The Uber car was driving 40 mph when visibility through its video camera was only TWO car lengths. It made NO effort to avoid the accident. In my opinion, if it had been a human driver at the wheel, they would be facing potential IMPAIRED or INTOXICATED MANSLAUGHTER charges. Driverless travel is gathering pace and you have nothing to fear, say industry experts The role of automation was thrust into the spotlight after a driverless Uber car in the US killed a pedestrian but experts told a panel discussion in Hong Kong that the technology will work out The subway system in Guangzhou's Flower City Square is also driverless. That's an entirely different issue from driverless cars.

  5. from the NY Times Chinese Scientist Claims to Use Crispr to Make First Genetically Edited Babies The researcher, He Jiankui, offered no evidence or data to back up his assertions. If true, some fear the feat could open the door to “designer babies.” A microplate from Chinese scientist He Jiankui’s lab, containing embryos whose genes have been edited. Dr. He’s announcement prompted a statement from a group of 122 scientists condemning his actions as “crazy.”CreditCreditMark Schiefelbein/Associated PressGina KolataSui-Lee Wee from Wikipedia

  7. GPS offset in data for China I think the guy here misses the mark for a very obvious reason - Google and some others get their map data from Chinese sources with the offset already built in and doesn't bother with the correction - but there are still some interesting observations and things to be aware of. The Bizarre Relationship Between China and Google Maps The offset shows clearly here between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. San Sham Road in Hong Kong connects directly to XinShen Rd. in Shenzhen, but, due to the offset applied to the Chinese side, well, it's off by a couple hundred yards or so. This same offset shows up in Google maps anywhere in China, and can show up as discrepancies between satellite data and map data. The best maps to use are ones which use their own data, or have the correction accounted for - Autonavi or Amaps is a good source at http://ditu.amap.com/. They are the most up-to-date - I believe they are the ones who supply the map data to Google - and even have their own phone app similar to Google maps (but which will show your correct location). The difference between Autonavi andGoogle is that Google data is older, and doesn't use the correction
  8. from Abacus True intelligence, no. Intelligently pre-programmed logic, which is definitely fallible. Facebook and Huawei are the latest companies trying to fool facial recognition Researchers from Facebook, Huawei and several universities show how software, stickers and clothing can confuse artificial intelligence After placing a sticker on the hat, the facial recognition system did not recognize the person as a person. (Picture: Petr Ivanov/YouTube) This video shows "de-id'ed" faces, which are altered enough to break the facial ID logic, but not enough to appear any different to a human eye. You can see the changes (altered eyes, nose, and mouth) using a layered image in Photoshop to switch between the real and the altered faces.
  9. from the SCMP - hopefully, they will be able to convert between the 2 coordinate systems, if needed China one step closer to satellite navigation system that could threaten dominance of GPS Successful launch of new BeiDou-3 satellites expected to ensure network will be up and running by the end of the year A discussion of the mis-matched coordinates - Mapping China - Chinese style
