  1. Hi!! A few questions about VPN sites. I signed up for ExpressVPN last year. It was the first VPN that I had ever used. I didn't use it that much but I would like to used it a bit more this year. They can be useful. I guess how they work is that when we access the VPN site it registers their IP address (located in a different country) as our IP address. It makes it look like we are surfing/ accessing the web from that different site located in Singapore or the US, etc.. When I got to China this year I had problems accessing my Credit union on-line. It just wouldn't work. I was getting a fault message. I was being blocked. So I access my VPN and viola , I could access my account. So it has been useful for me to have. Also I could access my school Gmail account. Typically I used it for just a short period of time. I wonder if i should worry how long of a time that I use the VPN. Is it's use easily be detected? Will we get in trouble for using it? I am trying to access some Chinese movie/TV watching sites but I can't read most of them. So I am just guessing what I am trying to select when I am clicking away.. So I am wondering if can I access Comcast Infinity site and watch some good old US TV shows on my computer, via my VPN? Will we run into any problems? What do you all think? Danb
  2. This can't be good news for accessing CFL from China - increased blockage of Google API services have already affected our performance China blocks thousands more websites as ‘Great Firewall’ targets cloud services An ongoing topic - click here for Most Recent Post
  3. I guess it's about time to put away with fussing with onion routers and free internet proxies. I recently learned about a service called WiTopia. The company provides a VPN connection that enables users in China to appear as if they were coming from the US. It's great so far. I can now bypass all the blocking, and get straight to youtube, and everything else that gets blocked. The price is actually quite reasonable, at 39.99 per year. You can view more about it here: http://www.witopia.net/welcome.php See note below about Witopia and Astrill - edit 2023 Randy W
  4. Just paid for a month of ExpressVPN so we can watch Olympics from inside China via CCTVx. Only can find Hong Kong ... and the speeds are too slow to be useful. Anybody: 1. . . . . know a VPN location inside China that we can connect to and maybe help things along. Or, 2. . . accomplishing this some other way? I think Dish has a China package (no, I don't have Dish). Thanks for any tips, Greg
  5. Skype Vanishes From App Stores in China, Including Apple’sNot completely blocked yet. Before, you could add money to your balance through the Apple Store, for example. Would seem that now they need to go through the web site. Anyway, once it returns, you have to wonder what Microsoft had to do to make it compliant.
  6. Hi. I would like to know what are some good sites to use to watch TV shows Movies on-line in China. I did a search on this forum but didn't come up with any ideas. I have been trying a couple site:. Tudou, Youkou, Sohu and Iqiyi. I first search for them on line. When the site comes up I will right click my mouse and ask the page to be translated to English. Sometime that works and sometime that don't. I do run into some problems. Sometimes no audio. Also getting VIP previews. They show the first 5 minutes but then the movie freezes up. I think that they are looking for money. I don't know how to pay them via my US computer. Any suggestions on the whole matter? Thank You Danb An Update: I just tried the sites that I mentioned above. It seems like I can access them. I can select a movie or TV show. But that is when things stop. I get the movie screen background but no movie. Just a message in Chinese. Yesterday things were working sometime. Today not at all. Not sure if they were just teasing me yesterday. I will try giving my Lao Po's PC a try and maybe the her Ipad later.

  8. Hello. Recently I have been using Gmail. Do you all think that i will have problem accessing Goggle and Gmail in China? Thanks for your thoughts. Danb
  9. I will be in PRC for most of October. I need connection to various things for various reasons while there. A year ago or more I was using Astrill but it was a sad mole in the whack-a-mole that is CN control. Can anyone recommend a VPN I can use from PRC to do my U.S. Stuff? A PM is fine if you want to protect some names. Thanks, Greg
  10. Hope this is not a hot button issue for the PRC but here it goes: Wife has subscribed to a VPN service for viewing Chinese-specific programing and for a better selection of US, British sitcoms that are much better than Netflix and others can offer here thanks to Chinese "copy right" regulations. I chose a paid site for better speed and a non-complicating process so I thought. All we need is using a proprietory software to open a portal and with user ID and password to sign into a server in China and viola! It appears to be communicating from an IP located in China now, simple enough! Starting about a few days ago, this simple and stupid solution starts to unravel, Here is one of my many conversations with their 'live chat" tech support: Jon 06:29:10 pm For the last 48 hours your Chinese servers have been spotty if available at all. This has been confirmed by your other tech support and other regions (UK, US ) are fine! McKenzie 06:30:08 pm Please tell me the server address you use ? Jon 06:31:51 pm cn-re1.pointtoserver.com, cn-hn1.pointtoserver.com, and cn1.pointtoserver.com to name a few McKenzie 06:32:05 pm and protocols ? Jon 06:33:08 pm PPTP, L2TP McKenzie 06:33:19 pm please tell me your OS Jon 06:33:54 pm its a mac pro Yosemite McKenzie 06:34:17 pm Please follow http://support.purevpn.com/openvpn-on-mac-tunnel-blick Jon 06:36:29 pm can you tell me what that is? I only start having this problem the last few days. McKenzie 06:37:04 pm it is the tutorial for OpenVPN protocol on MAC Jon 06:38:26 pm and why do i need that now. I have been using your service since July with no issue? McKenzie 06:39:01 pm since you are unable to connect with PPTP and L2TP and you are not able to access the router to disable the firewall , you can try with openVPN now Jon 06:40:39 pm How long the open VPN is going to take? Does it put my macbook in danger? and is it reversible if that does not work? McKenzie 06:41:51 pm it is user friendly and more secure than PPTP and L2TP and you can revert it back as well I was not impressed for two reasons: It was never explained to me why the previous arrangement starts to give me problems after months of trouble-free operation, and What is an open VPN and is it an endless attempt to patch a hack by the PRC and what it does to the security of my Macbook? What do I got myself into by downloading yet another piece of program to the OS? I am not interested in knowing all the techo stuff to make this work, anyone have any clue what am I dealing with? Thanks in advance.
  11. Here is a plugin for chrome browser that provides a VPN capability. As virtual private networks (VPNs) go, TunnelBear is one of the most user-friendly, with a cute ursine themed UI and a simple on/off switch to make it appear you're elsewhere in the world. Its newly-released TunnelBear for Chrome extension isn’t actually a full-on VPN. Instead, it’s an encrypted proxy which only handles data headed in and out of your browser, rather than from your entire machine. Still, that comes in handy when you want to watch video clips or access sites that are otherwise region restricted. https://www.tunnelbear.com/ Chrome Plugin: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/omdakjcmkglenbhjadbccaookpfjihpa
  12. Hello Everyone. I have been trying to log in (from China) into my Credit Union account that is based in the states. In it title it has the words: American Eagle Credit Union. Well I had tried about 10-15 times at various times of the day. No luck. I was sure that it was being screened for some reason. I was wrong. I tried different search engines, Google Chrome and Yahoo. I tried different time of days. No luck. I then tried different variations of the words. Perhaps they don't like American federal or some other variations. That does not seem to be the cause. I was able to access other sites with similar titles. So now what? Danb PS : I was able to access this site on my last trip. I do have a new Laptop that is running Windows 8. And I can access my BoA account on it.

I'm pretty confident that China censors read this board all day, every day. And, with the new pledges coming from China to tighten controls on the Internet, have long wondered whether they would ever actually begin blocking bypasses to their great wall. This morning, I noticed that during the night that my gate through the wall was unexpectedly closed. It's hard to know whether it's a technical glitch with my keymaster, or whether a geek Chinese tech-tool thing is meddling. Anyone else having a problem getting out?
  14. It's been a while since I've posted here and I'm sorry for that and I'm sorry that the first time I'm doing so is to ask a question, but I need to know... If we decided to move back to China and I was able to keep my US based job, a long shot, what sort of visa would I need to be able to live in China with the wife while having a US based job? What other issues and concerns should I be aware of? I realize this may be a complicated question but I have to start somewhere, no?

  18. My VPN provider, Witopia, sent out this bulletin about DNS servers. Of course, a DNS server doesn't need to be used with a VPN to be effective. I've entered these as manual DNS servers even when NOT connected to the VPN - it seems to have sped up my response considerably: Of course, DNS servers are freely accessible, so these should work just fine for anyone. Or your own DNS servers from another provider should work as well.

  20. My fiancee in Guangzhou can not access the FromChinaToUSA bbs. I'm guessing the Chinese government is blocking it. Anyone else having this problem? Is the website is mirrored on another server that she might reach? Thanks.
  21. It seems my SO cant access the http://wowpicture.com/fromchinatousa_bbs/ website (currently in mainland china) Is their any way around this great firewall? Its getting on my nerves!
  22. http://www.canada.com/ottawa/ottawacitizen...15-a5cbb1842292 I was just surfing around and saw this article. I can't count how many times times I was chatting with my wife and sent her a link from a site I wanted her to check out and her reply was, "it won't open." I figured it was her browser settings or something. I guess the "Great Wall" has gone digital now. That sucks.
