  1. It is NEVER advisable to leave a debt unpaid - they can be pretty unscrupulous I am not advocating being a dead beat but from a practical POV, once it is posted on the credit reports for collection, no amount of repayment will make that disappear there are millions every year who can't pay their medical bills not by choice.
  2. if it is forwarded for collection, it is on his credit records, paying it off now will not improve anything in reality. Since it is for your FIL, I would just lay it off, there appears nothing to do at this point.
  3. I traveled with two passports with a valid visa on the expired passport until I get a 10-year visa on the new one. I don't see the need to renew a passport with one year left personally.
  4. Now you get to carry both passports for the next ten years once the current five pages run out....
  5. I got another suggestion: apply for a new passport and then get the visa to go with the new passport,
  6. In a very broad stroke: It is the profit from transactions that are taxable. If she can come up with enough records to show the investments, she may be able to substantially reduce her tax liability with IRS. She needs a CPA to give her good tax advice. This forum is way too casual and broad to discuss issue for the best tax treatment for the sale of a business. Insurance payout is generally tax-free, but if it is an investment instrument then the profit/interest is the part that is taxable. Again, seek professional advice.
  7. Hope this is not a hot button issue for the PRC but here it goes: Wife has subscribed to a VPN service for viewing Chinese-specific programing and for a better selection of US, British sitcoms that are much better than Netflix and others can offer here thanks to Chinese "copy right" regulations. I chose a paid site for better speed and a non-complicating process so I thought. All we need is using a proprietory software to open a portal and with user ID and password to sign into a server in China and viola! It appears to be communicating from an IP located in China now, simple enough! Starting about a few days ago, this simple and stupid solution starts to unravel, Here is one of my many conversations with their 'live chat" tech support: Jon 06:29:10 pm For the last 48 hours your Chinese servers have been spotty if available at all. This has been confirmed by your other tech support and other regions (UK, US ) are fine! McKenzie 06:30:08 pm Please tell me the server address you use ? Jon 06:31:51 pm cn-re1.pointtoserver.com, cn-hn1.pointtoserver.com, and cn1.pointtoserver.com to name a few McKenzie 06:32:05 pm and protocols ? Jon 06:33:08 pm PPTP, L2TP McKenzie 06:33:19 pm please tell me your OS Jon 06:33:54 pm its a mac pro Yosemite McKenzie 06:34:17 pm Please follow http://support.purevpn.com/openvpn-on-mac-tunnel-blick Jon 06:36:29 pm can you tell me what that is? I only start having this problem the last few days. McKenzie 06:37:04 pm it is the tutorial for OpenVPN protocol on MAC Jon 06:38:26 pm and why do i need that now. I have been using your service since July with no issue? McKenzie 06:39:01 pm since you are unable to connect with PPTP and L2TP and you are not able to access the router to disable the firewall , you can try with openVPN now Jon 06:40:39 pm How long the open VPN is going to take? Does it put my macbook in danger? and is it reversible if that does not work? McKenzie 06:41:51 pm it is user friendly and more secure than PPTP and L2TP and you can revert it back as well I was not impressed for two reasons: It was never explained to me why the previous arrangement starts to give me problems after months of trouble-free operation, and What is an open VPN and is it an endless attempt to patch a hack by the PRC and what it does to the security of my Macbook? What do I got myself into by downloading yet another piece of program to the OS? I am not interested in knowing all the techo stuff to make this work, anyone have any clue what am I dealing with? Thanks in advance.
  8. All I did at the CR-1 app to GUZ was loosely translated the resume in a side-by-side format. The consulate didn't make any fuss. Notorization is used when a witness is needed to authenticate the documents and verify the white books are an exact copy of the documents. Resume is just private information that based on the applicant's personal life.
  9. Driver's License came today with an expiration date in 2018 on conditional GC.
  10. NVC has requested prior to this issue: "Please place your case number in the subject line of the email and keep your attachments below five megabytes (MB)." Here: http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/immigrant-process/documents/Submit_documents.html#method1 5 mb is not so much. I had to resize all my .pdfs for submission. These 10 files were all submitted electronically April 15. By April 22nd I had an e-mail that 6 of the 10 files I had already sent were needed. This time (April 22) they specified "Please place the Case number in the upper right hand corner of each page of every document." Prior, they had only requested the Case number in the Subject line and in each Document Title. On May 12th they again requested 4 of the 6, the same as the first 10 I had already sent. So, these 4 files were sent 3 times. On June 16th I received an e-mail that "...all documents have been received." Note that this took place during the down time period. Later, the snail mail arrived postmarked June 18th stating the Interview has been scheduled. Therefore, yes document processing and Interview scheduling continued during the down time. Good for you. I never heard a peep when I did my wife' EP in 2013. It only takes another "hardware issue" for all the people to lose their case files not to mention if they fall in the wrong hands (yep, it already happened to OPM)
  11. The latest is that the biometric system where photos and fingerprints are stored is not functioning. When I did the electronic processing that was my big concern. Basically, you submit very large files containing the images of forms and photos sitting in NVC's inbox waiting to be processed. I was never comfortable about the ability for NVC to store them and sort them appropriately. It did work for my wife's CR1 fortunately. According to NYT, the State Dept. is trying to "fix" the problem around the clock and may not even start again until next week. Just for background, US on average issues 50,000 visas a day. I have no idea how they are going to recover the damaged biometric info since early June and catch up with those already approved visas. Seems like they need to resubmit it unless there is a secure massive backup (which fails already) to make that happen. So the interviews have been scheduled at GUZ? The B-1? Looks like a good mess to me and State Dept. is downplaying it.
  12. Well, that will make too much sense for government work. I suspect she will get a limited-term DL expiring in one year while the undocumented zipping around with their DL. After showing the letter we get another year extension and start it all over again after that one. Joy!
  13. Oh, lord. I really hate the local,DMV. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts.
  14. In California, do you get a DL that expires on the date of the 2 year green card expiration? Then what to do while applying for the condition removal? My wife just passed her test, I have not seen her official DL yet. I am praying not to have to go to the DMV ever!
  15. Insisting everything we eat to be "organic" which in my interpretation is compose or animal waste. She also say the strawberries from supermarket are 'dyed' because they are so red. It makes our life full of laughters and sometimes arguments but it is all good! She flexed her muscle and make me wear sucks all day indoor too.
  16. Just a few points: 1. U.S. government is mute on dual citizenship, at best it does not encourage it. 2. PRC actively revokes PRC citizenship if their former citizens become naturalized foreign citizens 3. The moment an oath is made, the PRC citizenship is revoked by PRC definition 4. The mass corruptions that are on newspaper these days. Most officials/criminals have overseas ties or citizenship 5. If PRC government can really effectively compare notes with other foreign countries on the naturalized Chinese nationals, you wouldn't think they already done it quietly? and why would US government wants to share that info? 6. Now if you need a new Chinese visa for the first time, the requirement is to submit your old PRC passport so they can cancel it because of #3 above. 7. The Gong An (DPS) and Foreign Affairs appear to not share their database as of now. Unless you get caught by DPS, you don't need to cancel your ID which is a separate system from passport (so far). There used to be a requirement to cancel your ID before you can be granted permission to leave the country; that was relaxed in 2005. 8. That's why the DPS is running a campaign asking people to report to authority any dual citizenship violators 9. With the 10-year visa PRC issues now. the entering/exit through a third country/territory is really unnecessary and expensive. 10. Unless you are so stupid to let DPS learn that you are a foreign country citizen which I understand is a national bragging right, you get to keep your ID until such time that either the PRC government get the political will to merge their systems or someone turns you in. 11. No one knows if or when China will adopt a dual citizenship policy because the mass exodus of brain power and capitals or to tighten its enforcement by systematically looking through the passport holders' exit/enter records. So the moral is that you lost your Chinese citizenship when you acquire another country's citizenship. The nation Huko and ID are the blindspots . IF you keep your citizenship situation close to you chest, you get to keep huko and ID Don't try to use an invalid green card or a Chinese passport, the consequence is far more severe than dancing around the grey area of ID issue.
  17. Is the only time a Chinese would need a visa would be if they have a U.S. Passport? I have noticed on the Visa Application form it is in English and Chinese. It states applicants born in China who apply Chinese visa with his or her new foreign passport is required to submit his or her Chinese passport or last foreign passport. Just applied for my Chinese Q2 visa and knew a thing or two about holding a Chinese passport or even a Taiwanese passport. First: Always use US passport when exit US. It is required or you will be in trouble when there is no record of you leaving when you come back from your trip. Second: You need a Chinese visa to enter China thus you have to go to one of the consulates for your states (fun time, I know). Then: Upon seeing your birthplace on your US passport, they will require to see your old passport if it says China, Taiwan, etc. Finally: You will get your Chinese visa attached to your US passport along with your cancelled Chinese passport since China does not allow Dual citizenship. That's the SOP for Chinese consulate. See, there is really no chance for the two passport scheme to work here. If for some foolish reasons you don't get a Chinese visa and try to use your Chinese passport to enter China, you would: 1. Get busted at the airport if they already have a file on you being a citizen of another country, or 2. Upon leaving China, you have a Chinese passport that does not have a US visa that the airline will let you on the plane nor does your US passport have a stamp for an entry in their system. You will get busted. So having a dual passport against Chinese laws only going to get you hassles with no real benefits.
  18. Complaints on your in-flight meal? Watch this plate! That's how we at Chengdu Air deal with complaints! I got a kick out of it that in China young girls go to flight attendant preparatory school as part of college-level major with no guarantee of employment at their own costs.
  19. LAX has tons of TSA/DHS people knows Mandarin/Korean/insert your preferred asian language. You should see the arrival lobby at Tom Bradley Terminal. It is only the largest passengers airport for travelers from Asia....
  20. you will be given a checklist with XX marks. It is your best friend. Read it carefully. The best policy is to bring exactly what was asked! The only other thing is the supporting documents (photos, letters, emails, QQ logs). I am often amazed by questions here that was clearly explained on NVC's website and the official fact sheets and yet people ask those questions trying to take a short cut riding on other people's accounts. Everyone's case is unique and rules that was six months ago might not be in place any more. I did all the filing myself and saved a lot of money/pain because it was a straight forward CR-1 and I read the instructions multiple times! Sometimes, I heard the wrong instructions from other members' alleged immigration attorneys and I cringe. If it came across as too harsh I apologize as I only wish the best of everyone based on the 427 days I went through. There were mocked-up forms on visajourney.com I found useful just make sure you use the latest forms. Best of luck.
  21. the IRS transcripts as I recalled were free of charge. I heard there is even a pdf version but I ordered the hardcopies which was turned in at the interview.
  22. unfortunately, it is designed for the people to reside for the long term. I just don't see how you can game the system without spending ungodly amount of money which you might as well save it for evidence of financial support. Sorry, I feel your pain.
  23. We did not bring the tax return for a June interview. Because IRS in its infinite wisdom refused to issue a TIN to my wife even she has a bank account and is entitled to have one issued after waiting four freaking hours in line. I had no way of reporting her SSN and filed as married filing jointly or so I filed for a deferral not wanting to deal with single status in the interview. Luckily it did not come up in the interview. The freaking beureacrates.
