  1. My wife has worked as a server in Chinese buffets. Tips are always welcome. I'm like you though. If all they are doing is seating us and bringing us our drink and then the tab, it doesn't seem like a tip is warrented. I still leave a couple of bucks on the table for them, but never the 15% or more tip onto the tab, so that it can end up in the owner's pocket. Typically the tips are totalled and split up equally among the staff. Obviously, written by someone who isn't aware of how unscrupulous many Chinese business owners can be. As opposed to non-Chinese owners???? Of course there are some bad ones. But race has nothing to do with it. BTW the bigotry/racism thread is over there: http://candleforlove.com/forums/index.php?...c=25673&hl=

  5. I don't think I have a knack. I think a lot of people convince themselves they can't understand the moment they hear something that isn't "normal". Some people are just poor listeners. For some, it's a form of xenophobia. For other's it's an excuse to justify bigotry and racism. I see something similar all of the time in my computer business. A very large percentage of people I encounter just turn off their ears the moment they hear any "tech" sounding word. People always ask what was wrong and then interrupt my response at the first "tech" word saying some lame thing like, "I don't understand and of that computer talk." If they'd give me two seconds to finish the damn sentence they would. Most would rather just have something to complain about.
  6. China guarantees the quality of it's exports......... http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-06...tent_905674.htm
  7. I have talked to Microsoft Activation support people in India hundreds if not thousands of times because of my work. I've never had any trouble understanding any of them but one time I did have to ask for another assistant because he could not understand me and I got tired of repeating myself. The people I have the most trouble understanding are recording artists. Does anyone really know all the correct words to "Louie, Louie"? I don't think the guys who sang it even know for certain.....
  8. Ling's reaction was a painful red lump about 2"x4" on the inside of her forearm that lasted for almost a full month. At least we knew what it was from (although we had a few scarey moments afraid that she had TB) and the Doc was good about telling us what to expect and not to let anyone test her again.
  9. http://www.userfriendlyonline.com/pics/congarat.gif The county clerk wasn't doing business hours ceremonies on the date Ling chose so the $25 office fee became a $100 off-site fee.
  10. That may be just a communication thing. Ling keeps saying "four needles". That's all she says about it now. Three were innoculations and the 4th was the TB test.
  11. It's just a standard test for TB. Ling had no innoculation records from China so the CS gave her what the papers said she needed.
  12. http://www.indepthinfo.com/potato/safety.shtml Light will cause the formation of solanine on the skin of the potato. Though not likely to cause serious harm, green skinned potatoes can taste bitter and may result in temporary digestive discomfort. When confronted by green skin on a potato, simply peel it away. Keep as much of the rest of the skin as possible. For this is where most of the vitamins reside. This is part of the story. The FDA actually monitors toxin levels in potatoes very closely and orders the destruction of many tons each year when the toxin levels rise above certain established maximum safe levels. Best advice is to avoid buying potatoes with evidence of green in the skin--the FDA can't check every field....
  13. Certain types of TB innoculations will also cause a strong false positive in subsequent tests. Ling had a terrible reaction to the CS's injection test. They checked her history and x-rays and said she fine and warned her to not have another test in the future.
  14. The VO I talked to said it absolutely helps. Now if you were there and still got a blue then there was a problem your visit didn't override or answer. On the other hand maybe some of those of us who got pink got the benefit of the doubt on a minor issue because of our presence. We can all play this game forever. Everyone can just do whatever they want and guess what? Either way you'll probably get a pink or a blue. Go ahead and make up any reason you want to explain either. It won't change anything. I went because Ling had never been so far away from home before and was very nervous. I don't care if GZ cared or not. Ling needed me.

  16. short-hand: Was given a ticket for doing 86 in a 55 in another state. I had a witness that I was doing 61 in a 65 (double-checked by checking the mile-post noted on the ticket). Went back three months later for hearing. First order of business, the bailiff came out and stated that as everyone was only here to try and save their insurance rates the court, for an additional $9 on top of the citation amount, would be offering to convert each ticket to a non-moving violation. You know, just to speed things along. Example1: A kid cited for driving 125mph in a school zone had his ticket changed to driving without his license on his person. Example2: A woman cited for running one red-light and then a second while trying to escape pursuit had her ticket changed to driving with expired tabs. Anyway, I watched all of this going down for more than 5 hours before they called my case. They offered to change mine to littering. When it was my turn to speak I was soooo angry that I went ahead and told them what I really thought of their little scheme. I stated that I was absolutely appalled to have witnessed more than 5 hours of officers of the court committing perjury and fraud. I argued the specifics of my case and offered photographic proof that the officer erred in what he wrote on the ticket. Bottom line: The judge dismissed the ticket completely BUT STILL CHARGED ME $175 FOR COURT COSTS! THE SAME AMOUNT AS THE ORIGINAL TICKET!!! ************************************** This is not the only such case that I have experienced in 37 years of driving. Some of you already hit the nail on the head. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!! I drive a 4Runner with company advert in the side back windows. I repair computers and networks for a living. Cops in small towns see nice car and computers and suddenly see $$$$$$ and someone who won't have time to come back to their little town to bother to fight. I have spent far more money traveling and taking time off work than the tickets ever were but I believe in doing the right thing and standing up for the truth. I guess my parents raised me wrong.
  17. Actually, it makes you SOMEBODY. That's the point of the 2nd Amendment, and that's why so many in power HATE it!! Best Regards ok tough guy.
  18. for some rather interesting related reading try Googling: police MMPI (MMPI stands for Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory)
  19. I checked first with Clackamas County Health and was told they didn't do immunizations nor could they help with the I-693. Later when chatting with a client who supervises such agencies for the the State of Oregon, I learned that whoever I talked to at the County was wrong. A few days later I received a call from someone investigating the County office. Bottom line, I got an apology and an assure that it would never happen again but no one offered to refund the $350 I paid for shots and a signature. At least now I know to demand better service when it's time to AOS my step-daughter.
  20. stereotype much? technically you are correct, the majority are Latino but not overwhelmingly so.
  21. We got married at our home with a couple of guests present. Marriage License -- $60 Justice of the Peace -- $100 Rings -- $0 I guess to some of you that makes us: a. cheap b. a joke c. trailer trash d. all of the above
  22. I nominate this for inclusion on Curt's Greatest Hits. I posted that just for you Randy.
  23. I've talked to a lot of people about legal and illegal immigration. My only conclusion is that most people are very stupid.
  24. No, he charges a flat rate (under 2K) for his immigration cases. As far as the flight over there, I'll gladly get him a ticket for his trouble since I wouldn't expect him to cover that cost. No, the people that charged me thousands upon thousands and still didn't file a single sheet of paper for me are the law firm of Ellis, Li, & McKinstry in Seattle WA. I would personally not recommend their services as there's plenty of competent representation out there to be had for far less than what they charged me. I'd be suing ELM for malpractice.
