David Your experience seems so close to mine. We have hot water if her on-demand water heater ignites. We got lucky on my last visit- after 2 days of attempts, the thing fired up, I got a shower before my flight home,

By S word, I think you mean "Shopping" ? Ying, being are former seller is just hardcore. Here is how we do it. She is in charge - I am the dumb laowai that has wandered off, has to be located for some consultation. She does, the final negatiation for a good price, She is the buyer - not me.

Beware of generalizations based on age or a limited exposure to China. If you have only experienced the boom cities - you do not know China. Most Chinese people do not lead the life you see in Shanghai. Beijing, etc. A "poor" person in Beijing is much better off than most folks. Ying is frugal, she is not old. When she was young, things like a egg to share with her siblings for breakfast was a treat. Her father died when she was young. She dresses very nicely, always looks stunning, but she will have nothing to do with the overpriced designer stuff. In the last few years, Ying has done okay. She and I give money to help her mother, brother, sister without any hesitation. She does not live "high on the hog", she does not have a refrigerator at her Beijing apartment. I think this is the real China

How to text text msg to china cell phones
ed and ying replied to wulongtea's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
I can SMS Ying on her China Mobile phone from my TMobile phone or via Pincity. She also has one of those "local' mobile phone. It is like a souped version of our home wireless phone. Sorry I forget the local name. . I usually cal her on that phone because it is much cheaper for her. It does not accept SMS. -
And then she came out smiling....

Exactly my point - This is information - they have 36 interviews listed for May/ June. Observe, evaulate, make prediction/decision -
Happy Mothers Day to all CFL mothers !! Last year Ying spent Mother's Day with my mother. (In China) This year she wished her mother a Happy Mothers Day. The concept is not known in her village, so she explained. She sent E-card to my mother. She says the idea of Mothers Day is growing in the big cities.

The fact of the matter is that the Chinese Gov has had very active and very heavy handed role in evaulating and restricting internet content - Ying could not access news/info sites. Like any dam, their will be leaks. Restricting access to internet content is a big challenge. Maybe the restriction has eased up a bit ? Ying could get through to one of the local realtors sites to view some homes on-line

That sounds cool. A way to help carry the tradition - in the face of what appears to be "easy/better" alternative.

Back on topic Chopsticks - I learned on the wicked Korean thin, metal sticks. If you can do those, you have got it made. Being in business, I think the ability to use chopsticks have served me well. There is nothing like having all eyes at the table watching to see if the laowai can pickup the oily peanut, etc.

I am now 100% called Laogong. We we are going on over 2 years, so BaoBei has tapered off. I guess we should do some practice with my real name, in case the VO asks

Welcome jingutierrez Like you , my MM likes the "western style" She think it is more respectful, and considerate. As to difference between American and USA MM - My experience is: cares more about us, more modest, more frugal. Good News - One aspect of the western style she likes is to hold hands and kiss in public

I will assume you have bank account in China. You might try depositing the check into your account. That might work. I only have actual experience with cash and wire transfer. Account at Bank of China has 3 amounts/ledgers for RMB, USD and Euro has money has been deposited in all 3 currencies.

Yes it is the Smokey mountains. Just to the north is the Skyline Drive. There are at least 2 National Parks in the area Smokey MT and Skyline Dr. It has been years (25) since I was in Smokey Mt park - No dollywood, etc It was only as few years ago that I revisted Skyline Dr - starting in Front Royal VA. It was still very beautiful and non commercial, almost like I remember years ago.

about chinese real estate

Not sure where this post is headed. Just FYI. Ying rents apartment in Beijing-Chaoyang for 1000 RMB a month - 2 rooms plus kitchen and bathroom. It's not fancy. I stay there when I visit - I could live there for rest of my life - but it would be a change to what I think is usual
