Potential trouble for visiting China in the near future

Recommended Posts

I will be interested to see responses here. I am planning a trip sometime in July. I have also heard stories of them putting arriving people who were Infa-red warm in hotels for 10 days. I would not want to be stuck in Beijing.

When it comes to things like this, government intervention is absolutely needed. This person developed a fever of 39C on Sunday, that's 102.2 degrees F. This is right after he returned from Canada. Then, he boards a train the next day in Beijing? What the heck is up with that? Okay, so he wants to get somewhere. Way too many people out there refuse to consider others when it comes to passing their infections along. They go to work when they are sick; probably because they are worried of getting fired. This flu thing has yet to peak. The CDC is reporting that it will likely happen in the next 4-6 months. What countries will stand up, and keep people like this from infecting others?

As was said before, I think the cow is out of the barn now even for China. My co-workers just told me that this case was confirmed and two foreigners in Qingdao, who were associates of this Chinese guy and took the train from Beijing with him (Jinan is halfway between Beijing/Qingdao train route) to Qingdao, have been hospitalized with flu symptoms awaiting the results.

I think this might be the case my wife told me about last night. They have been looking for everyone who may have been in contact with him since his arrival. So far, the government has been receiving excellent cooperation from its citizens. Haven't more than 250 people come forward, including taxi drivers?

Yes this is the same story I have been told from my wife and co-workers. I agree with you that the govrenment needs to be involved and China is doing a good job.

However the fact remains that there can be community spread of this flu and now in China two people have kicked it off. I do not think you can stop it now but they are giving it a good try.

Agreed. It's only a matter of time before it makes its way through the entire population of the world.

My trip will be in July.

There does not seem to be anything one can do as a precaution. Even if your pre-tested before your flight, if you just happen to be on the same flight as one person who as a Fever (regardless if it's swine flu), you could find yourself stuck in quarantine at a hotel until everything has been checked out.

Obviously if anything that can be done, should be done within reason.

damn, i have to be in China for my fiancee interview..

Put the mask on once you go through the gate in the usa.

Take it off when the plane takes off.

Wear it as you walk around the cabin (restroom breaks, etc)

Put it on again when the plane is emptying.

Take it off again when you get OUTSIDE of the airport.

Double points for wearing a pink mask (can be had from your favorite maternity nurse suppliers).

I'm not so worried about YOU, as the carriers AROUND YOU.

China has its first suspect case of Swine flu. This case was a Chinese student from St Louis, MO, who went back to China for summer vacation. This suspected case has brought a lot of outrage from China public and some blame game is going on.

Because U.S now has most confirmed cases of swine flu (surpassing Mexico), I have the feeling that any people who are going to visit China from the U.S. may receive extra scrutiny (and potential discrimination). We have to remember SARS created a lot of problems for China back in 2003. So I understand why China must be extra careful. It must be discouraging for Americans and their Chinese spouses to visit China at this time. My wife is planning to visit China this summer but she is worried that she may have to cancel her ticket?

Has anyone here has to cancel his/her ticket to China because of Swine flu?

I would say this is quite likely. My office circulated a memo last week, that they may begin requiring people to wear masks, and practice more sanitary habits. I wouldn't mind seeing more sanitary habits, and replied to HR attempting to communicate that there is no evidence that masks are effective in preventing you from getting or passing the virus. They were somewhat receptive, I think.

Masks were in vogue when SARS was a big item. I still have a bit of my mask collection - but....

Your HR department prolly has a long corporate memory of SARS in China - masks were in vogue, rarely seen as optional.

Wear yer mask - you'll be fine...

Thats my concern also. I am leaving for China at the end of June. This has gotten me on my toes. I have NO idea what to do ... cancel my trip until later - but then how much later? Go and hope for the best? Taking it one day at a time.

*EDIT*

I am not going to Guz, but the rest of my post stands about spending time with my wife.

I was talking with a Chinese guy this afternoon who works for a Oklahoma City University. He is involved in a program that brings students from a university in Tianjin to Oklahoma City University to study international law and escorts American students to study in Tianjin. He said the Chinese government has issued an order that no students are to go to the USA or any country that has swine flu this summer.

He said that when an airplane lands in China the health people show up in moon suits to check everyone on the plane. If one person is running a fever everyone goes into quarantine for a week at the governments expense in a 3 star hotel with free food and internet.

I'm thinking my wife and I will likely pass on a trip to China this fall.

Anyone up for Cancun? Rates are cheap and the locals claim no flu there (lies)!
