Hello everyone ,Has anyone taken their Chinese wife with green card on vacation to Greece( or anywhere in Europe)?....Wow,seems to be pretty complicated applying for the Schengen Visa..many documents....whats the chance of getting denied? Man this is bringing back the nightmares when i was trying to get my wife here to America 10 years ago now, the hassles i had with immigrations and eventual denial.Do you have to actually purchase flight tickets and hotels? seems risky to spend money on tickets that you might not be able to use.

I just got back vacationing in Mexico with my wife and I want to share my experience going through US and MEX customs. i did some research before we left but didn't find any definitive answer online so hopefully this will give more clarity and alleviate someone's stress. Short Story YES, you can travel to Mexico and Canada with expired 2 year conditional permananent residence card (green card), just don't forget to bring your ORIGINAL I-797 extension letter; this is very important, no copies or file saved on your cell phone - you must bring original letter of extension. Have a good and relaxing vacation and stop worrying Long story My wife's 2 year conditional PR card expiration date is Nov. of 2017. We applied for I-751 and received the I-797 extension letter in August of 2017. Airline counter agent: Requested to see extension letter when she saw the expired card. Mexican customs officer: Looked at her Chinese passport and the expired PR card, stamped wife's passport, did not request to see extension letter. US customs officer: Saw her Chinese passport and expired PR card, my wife voluntarily handed her the extension letter but the officer replied "oh, I don't need to see the letter if you just went to Mexico or Canada. If you went back to China, then I'd have to see it." Some people online advocate getting I-551 stamp on the passport just to be safe but we did not do that. So there you have it! Stop worrying and enjoy your vacation Cheers, John

My wife entered at the POE this past week, I have some family in Mexico that we would like to go visit, and was wondering, her passport was stamped with a regular entry stamp (blue in color) and the officer wrote IR-1 and signed under that. This is proof of status when it comes to coming back into the US after entering Mexico? We want to be sure she can come back, we are just going for 1 night 2 days to Mexico. Thanks Nathan

My wife and I are flying to China for a few weeks in October on Air Canada, she has a 10 year green card. My question is in regards to flying back from Hong Kong, will she need anything as far as a visa to leave mainland China or will her green card and flight ticket be enough? Looking online I did not find anything that was required except the green card and ticket but want to be sure we are correct. Thanks.

Has anyone been able to get a Schengen Visa (we are specifically going to Italy) through a service. I am trying to avoid a trip down to NYC and having to go to the Consulate ourselves. A service anyone can recommend?

My wife is a Chinese citizen with a Chinese Passport and U.S. permanent resident. Does she need to apply for any visa when we go back to China to visit? Or can she get back into the U.S. with her permanent resident card alone.

An interesting wrinkle for Europe... If you are thinking about traveling to the European Union Countries anytime soon you may want to know this. Sounds like if and when you apply for a schengen visa for your LPR spouse you will need to also get one for yourself as a US Citizen. Then again, this is politics and may blow over, this would cause all sorts of travel problems that Europe cannot afford. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/europe-visa-free-travel-americans-european-parliament-vote-a7609406.html

I will probably ask my Chinese girlfriend to marry me soon. She lives in Beijing, but got her MBA in the US and speaks excellent English. Neither of us want to live in China, and she can't legally come here to live until visa is approved, but we want to be together. Is it possible for us to get married, immediately apply for CR1 visa and travel the world for a while so we can be together. Then have the interview somewhere else in Canada, Israel or Europe, without having to return back to China, and move to the USA in 6-12 months when the visa is approved?

Does anyone know if the K-1 VISA allows the fiance to take off from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) instead of an airport in mainland China? I heard that they are allow to do so and stay in Hong Kong for at most 7 days, but have yet to find the source of that information. Or does the fiance need to have a separate valid permit to enter Hong Kong to board a flight at HKG? Thank you

Please note these are ground crossings by car, if entry by air starting in September Canada will require an electronic travel authorization before entry into Canada, see: http://candleforlove.com/forums/topic/48686-visiting-or-transiting-through-canada-by-air/ not sure if this requirement will also be applied to the road crossings at some point. My mum-in-law arrived in the states two weeks ago on an IR-5 visa and entered through JFK where they endorsed her visa. We paid the immigrant fee and are waiting to the actual green-card to arrive in the mail. We had planned on going to a Scottish games we like to attend every year up in Maxville ON, which was on our calendar long before Mum would come, and the timing was such that she would be here in time to go with us, but before she would get her card. I decided that the I-551 notation should be sufficient for the Canadian POE so we took the chance. Our hotel was in Massena NY so would cross at Cornwall ON and return same day, and then make another crossing the following day at Ogdensburg NY in order to visit family in Kingston ON. So Saturday we crossed at Cornwall ON, the border guard was a little confused asked if mum had a visa to visit Canada, so I pointed out that the notation at the bottom of visa indicates that it serves as a green-card until her actual card arrives, the guard then consulted her supervisor by phone and Ok'd the entry for us, we had a great time at the games and then returned to NY the American POE understood we were waiting for her green-card and waved us on. On Sunday we drove from Massena NY down to Ogdensburg and crossed into Canada again, this time the Canadian border officer was a little less confused, he questioned that Mum's visa expired on the 26th, I had to explain that it was endorsed at JFK and again the endorsed visa acts as a green-card until her actual card arrives, this time no call to the supervisor, the guard accepted my explanation and allowed entry to Canada. We then visited Kingston and decided to shoot over to Toronto for dinner before returning to NY by way of Niagara Falls.

A few things regarding visiting and transiting Canada. First: If traveling to Canada by air, non US Citizens will need what is called an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) this seems to only for entry via air, not via a land crossing. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/tourist.asp Second: If transiting Canada via two airports, Chinese citizens who are just connecting can transit without a visa. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/china.asp

Your Passport Might Not Be Valid in Some Countries Even If It Hasn't Expired Yet So if your passport expires in 70 days, you might run into trouble on your way to France, which requires passports to be valid for 90 days after the return date on your ticket. Though not a new rule, it’s something you might not know if you don’t travel globally often and think that your passport is valid because of the expiration date. One couple in CBC News’ story lost thousands of dollars due to this issue, having to change their flights and cut short a dream vacation. To avoid having this happen to you, look up the country’s passport requirements before you travel there http://lifehacker.com/psa-your-passport-might-not-be-valid-in-some-countries-1735449005 Related: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/preventable-passport-problem-costs-family-thousands-1.3260678

My wife had a flight to China yesterday and we found out the visa inside the passport expired. However her green card doesn't match her passport last name so she didn't go after traveling 400 miles to the airport. I need to change her passport to her American name and need to know what I must do to get this done. It may cost me another road trip to Chicago to resolve but I need to get it done. I hope all I need is money to change, Chinese marriage license and hopefully translated birth certificate. My step son who is 21 needs to renew his expired Chinese passport as well. Any and all help I would be very thankful for.

We're thinking about a trip to Montreal in April. I know that Chinese citizens need a Canada visa unless they have a green card. My wife's green card hasn't come in the mail yet, and we don't know if it'll get here before April. However, she does have her stamped IR-1 visa in her passport, which is supposed to act as a green card until the gc arrives. Do any of you know if she can travel to Canada on the IR-1? I would hate to be at the Quebec airport and have a border control person say the IR-1 isn't acceptable.

I did search around to see if this topic had been addressed, but didn't find anything. My wife and I would like to go and visit HK with my extended family. I am a US Citizen so I'm able to get in for a short vacation with no issues. She still has her Chinese passport and is a US Permanent Residence holder. After researching a bunch it seems she does need a "HK Visitor's Pass" something that she mentioned that people needed if they were in the mainland and wanted to visit HK. Question is, hand anyone pulled this off from the US since that is where we currently are? Good thing is that we are going back to China this winter and she can probably process it from there, but as a contingency plan I wonder if the Chinese Embassy's in the US can process these visitors passes for HK.

Hi! Our interview is scheduled for next Tuesday, Oct 14th. If approved, the medical report says we must relocate to the US by March 25th. We were planning to visit the US during CNY and then move to the US full time May 1st. Do you think we should tell the GZ immigration people this plan during the interview or just keep it to ourselves? Is it okay to visit for 1 week during CNY, exit the US and return to the US full time on May 1st? Unfortunately, this relates to the China annual bonus pay out timing... Warm regards, Ben

And I thought I was done with all this visa...stuff. Just wondering if anyone (Chinese national holding China passport with US green card) has gone through the process of getting a tourist (General) visa for the UK? Seems pretty straight forward but they are requiring we enter a hotel with contact information before the application can be confirmed...BUT...they say numerous times to not book a hotel or airline BEFORE YOU ARE APPROVED! Tried calling the UK consulate here in the USA but they will not give visa information out through their information center. Anyone gone through this? Thanks!

I was telling ?my wife that this time when we go to Shenzhen I would like to go see Hong Kong. I have been through Hong Kong three times but never actually been to Hong Kong. My wife said this might be hard to do because she is traveling on a Chinese Passport and her US green card would not allow her entry into Hong Kong. This makes sense to me as she is still a Chinese national. Is there anyway around her having to get a special visa to go from Shenzhen to Hong Kong. She said that if she needed to apply for the special visa it would take up to 30 days to get it. any ideas?

Hi all. My wife is flying to China in the very near future to visit her parents for the first time since coming to the US to marry me. She is bringing her Chinese passport, her green card, and a certified copy of our marriage certificate/license. Are these still the items she MUST bring in order to leave/re-enter the US? Also, is it common to be detained upon coming back to the US after leaving/returning for the first time since receiving green card? Just wanted to try to get an idea of what she should expect based on experience from others thanks all :-) Don
