How about a one-liner from humorist Ogden Nash? I love work, I can sit and look at it all day.

The Lido in Beijing is nice. BUT, my experience with "westrn" rest. in China is that they are "semi-western" you can get an omelette or fried egg in a western breakfast, but everything else is Chinese. The Ramada at Shanghai Pudong is a western hotel, but again the food is semi-western. Good food but only slightly western. There are some tourist-oriented markets across from the Lido and they will dicker about the price.

Don't count on finding spaghetti fixins' at WM - I might want to take the stuff with me US -> China. How about BBQ chicken and home fries? I would take a bottle of BBQ sauce with me.

How many times did you open the package?
jkobman replied to jimglot's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps

What state are you in? ...and yes, you are in like compamy. We all know that this is nerve racking. WELCOME!!!!! Hang in there!! -
"Clearance Processing Complete"
jkobman replied to cosmiclobster's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
There is no real answer, just "hurry up and wait" during the entire process. Sometimes it feels like they are using the pkg to hold the door open. -
You mentioned "the smoke, etc" in China. I asked Sarah what she saw when she got to the US YESTERDAY - "It is so clean!" And, in the name of salad bars everywhere - she ate a salad and really liked it! YUP!

Mari said it right. When it is entered into the computer at GZ, DOS will have it in the computer. When it's in GZ - it's in the "inbox", inline to be processed. At some point, they will schedule an interview and send out the P4. We can hope that it will be QUICK!!!!

If someone was flirted with Sarah, she'd either give hin the "Shanghai Taxi Driver treatment" or her sister would hire someone to "help correct Mr. Flirt's thinking." This next 2 weeks will be crummy, but.......... I gotta clean the house. And yes, I did replace the toilet seat. http://deertrail26j.k12.co.us/Media/Images/Janitor.gif

The 2 weeks was so she and her sister in Calif. could get ready for a wedding out there. I now know that I want to be there with here REAL BAD!!!

Sarah is actually Xiao Wen Xia. (Wen Xia means rainbow and Sarah is a Bible name meaning Princess) Sarah's sister Rhea in Calif. gave her the name. It's funny, I sometimes say Sarah and sometimes Wen Xia. Rhea also gave my new stepson the name Samuel. Both good names. BYE

I would address it in English and Chinese. I always addressed and sent letters to Sarah in Eng/Chinese. It cannot hurt. Sarah did 1 set of forms for her and 1 set for her son. Make sure she makes copies - I told Sarah, "make 2-3 copies of everything - we are dealing with the US Govt. - they lose things - please make copies." Also, she made copies of the blank forms and filled them out once and had the blank copies in case she made a mistake. Sarah turned the forms around in 3 days. Hope this helps.

SARAH IS HERE!!!!!!!!! ...and man, I can't hardly stand it!!! I am so excited! B) B) She arrived at SFO about 12 noon PDT. Her sister picked her up at the airport. I spoke to her a couple of hours ago! She cleared Customs and her Visa was processed OK. I will post an EMail if there was any info to share with my fellow CFL'ers. She said the flight was "little good" - BUT, she has never flown and did not sleep. I think she might have worn out the armrests with a death grip! I will go to Sacramento in a couple of weeks and we will have a US wedding! WOO HOO!!!! http://www.evalueator.com/graphics/man-happy.gif

Need A Little P4 help!
jkobman replied to Bryan_Qunying's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
The DS-230 comes in P4. I pre-prepared it for Sarah. I ended up filling it in, but was ready to do it - Boy Scout Motto - "Be Prepared." -
Smoking is on the increase in China - "Rates of smoking are extremely high among Asian men-60 percent in Japan and China, for examples, and a whopping 73 percent in Vietnam (Pollack, 1997)." ( taken from - http://www.globaled.org/globalLiteracy/han...Handout11B.html ) I think you will need to take a respirator - the type auto body workers wear here and people wear in China during cold/flu season. Take a lot of Imodium A-D and start drinking the Pepto now if you are going to eat greens - I ate them in Sarah's home, but I knew the level of cleanliness in her home. Food on the street? Keep several books in the bathroom for additional reading. And China has a good "mix the powder" Kaopectate-like OTC medication in the "Pill Stores" - the meds work better than the old "little yellow pills" (looked like One A Day w/ Iron vitamins) they use to dispense.

I flew Wash. Dulles ->SFO -> SHanghai Pudong in Dec and a few weeks ago. Their frequest flier miles program seems to be starightforward. Also, I have a Capital One Visa card where I get air miles. Anyone else find something that works?

They also have the live fish etc. n the tanks in Nanjing and Qin Dao. But, I always avoid the fish swimming upside down! Also, I really enjoy the frogs and live turtles in the western-style grocery stores. http://www.millan.net/anims/giffar/frogmail.gif

Photo Requirements for Interview
jkobman replied to PJ's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Most of the decent photo stores do the photo to specs. Sarah had the pix done before we went to GZ - one less thing to do. There are a buncha photo shops near the Cons. that'll do the pix to specs. -
He had mentioned that he might stay at the White Swan - do you think he fell over the waterfall?
