  1. ------ Some advice needed My 27 year old stepdaughter has had a little success on Match.com. She notes she is currently in Beijing many times within her profile, but is listed under Tampa, Florida (where my wife and I live) as there is no way to indicate a non-US address on that site. She has had a bit of interest from Chinese guys mainly Taiwanese/Singapore/Hong Kong guys looking for a traditional wife and from foreign students who maybe think she is a US Citizen and appear like they may be looking for a green card. But she really has not had much response from non-Chinese guys even though she would probably prefer an American guy. Why is that? There are a few young guys on this site with Chinese wives and fiances and a few young gals here with Chinese husbands and fiances. But in general it appears that most of us here are 50 and over. Why the (relative) lack of interest in Chinese gals by younger American guys? Is it because they come off as "nerdy"? traditional? not into the bar scene? I will admit my stepdaughters match.com pictures are on the conservative side and not showing off as much as some of the bikini or even more "risque" pictures you can find on some dating web sites (a few of the pics on Chinese love links even show girls in lingerie) ...or so I've heard Her hobbies are reading, travel, exploring, hiking, sports. They don't include clubbing, getting drunk or pole dancing, Could that be the problem? My stepdaughter is a nice, well educated, conservative, respectful, hard working, studious, possibly even borderline "a little nerdy", traditional girl. I think she is decent looking and her pictures are good (you can probably search match.com for girls 27 Tampa, who speak English & Mandarin to lock onto her profile if interested in seeing the pictures she used). So why no interest from American guys? She hasn't even heard from many ABC (American Born Chinese). Does it take some bikini/lingerie photos to grab the interest of most American guys? What's the verdict here? Maybe I can add my 2 cents to this. It seems you want the opinion of a young person on here, I will be 25 in a few months. This is my take on it. I think the #1 reason for a lack of interest from young american men is because of finances and lack of being established. Our society as a whole is delaying marriage well into their 30's now because of a higher education demands. The older crowd (50+) are probably more established then us, already did the whole college thing, probably has a decent job to live comfortably. I dont know too many people in their 20's right now that would want to take on a big responsibility like petitioning for a girl oversees, let alone take care of her on his salary when she arrived. The only exception to this is unless they have parents that support the whole idea and are willing to provide that support for their son and their new wife. Another thing is our culture. My wife is the complete opposite of me, but we do have a few things in common such as long term goals and where we want to be in the future. However, when it comes to going out to clubs/bars and partying till the wee hours in the morning, she definitely does not ride that bus. I have to do a lot of persuading to get her to go out, and mind you she is 22 years old. She does enjoy herself when she does go out though and loves to dance. I think another thing that might scare away young american men is the fact that they might be supporting this person by themselves for many years, especially if the Chinese spouse English is limited. These are some things I considered when I first met my wife, but she is going to start college soon and earn a degree in something, either way, I don't want her to rely on me and that may be a personal preference, but I wonder how many other men think like me? Another thing is anyone that is established in the younger years, they probably met a nice girl in college or their work place therefore probably limits the pool of potential candidates. In my opinion if she really wanted to meet an young american man, then her best bet is to meet him in China. Well I hope my post was somewhat useful and I didn't come off the wrong way on any aspect.
  2. Lol!! I think Conan is in the lead. Keep us updated if that Chinese talk show post a response to that.
  3. I have heard of the show, but that's about it. Talking about cultural and language differences can sometimes be misinterpreted. American humor can be a little intimidating to Chinese people, because there is so much culture involved in it. http://www.youtube.com/user/ChinglishBroadway/feed http://chinglishbroadway.com/
  4. I was in the same situation as you. The only thing we were able to do is check on the tracking number we were given from China Post. Once a delivered symbol shows up, thats when it has arrived at the local guangzhou post office. In our case, I think we had to wait 2-3 weeks.
  5. Sorry I am not able to provide any real information to your questions, but your post entertained me. Your a boss. and my hero.
  6. I think you read in between the lines on my comment. I am referring to the fact that most (legal) possible options have been posted in this thread. The only thing left to post in this thread is someone that is willing to do this task for you.
  7. ICE is an agency you would not be dealing with (AOS or Removing Conditions). Correct, ICE = Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, basically a police force for Homeland Security. All immigrations paperwork is handled by USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Service) What happens when ICE raids his house and they found out shes not living there?
  8. I think we are beating a dead horse if we continue this thread anymore
  9. I met my wife on skype. In a letter I explained that we spoke everyday and I eventually booked a ticket to go visit her. Long story short.

If you are part of a church group, your business could be added to their pamphlet that they pass out each week
  11. Option 1. Let go of the attachment to the children and find another job. Like Dan said, is she really getting so much money that its worth the trouble? Option 2. She gets her drivers license and a cheap beater car that gets her from point a to point b. I made sure that my wife got her license asap because I live in a town with public transportation that is not very reliable and takes forever too!
  12. You guys may have a point, my wife was pretty spoiled in China(and still is). I was born in India and my family immigrated to the states when I was 6 years old. Even then I don't remember not having food on the table or "rough times". Ever since I have been in the states though, life has been good. Hopefully I never run into a situation where all I got left is the clothes on my back. Im glad everything worked out for you in the end Griz.
  13. Heh, not as smart as you. I got a 54.55% Nice work Randy!! It seemed like a lot of those answers would have been common sense if your t.v was on msnbc all day lol!

    Teaching in China?

Well when I first my wife in China, I went to a little town called Wuyishan I met a gentlemen from England there. He was teaching English at my wife's university and he was doing it for a year and he signed on again for another year. He told me all about it when I was there, I was picking his brain at it. They gave him a pretty decent size apartment near the school, I think it was the teachers dorm, i guess the higher you are in the chain the bigger your apartment is? Either way, he said he really liked it. He was a single man though, enjoying the scenery! I just wanted to add, I really wanted to be around Xiamen though as far as the teaching job goes. I plan to go to china next year. So visiting one of the local schools that have openings to see what it is all about wouldnt be a bad idea.

    Teaching in China?

So, you want to come to China, teach English, and live at a higher standard than the common people? You can live any way you like as long as you have the resources to do so. Personally, I think there is great value is immersing oneself as deeply into Chinese culture as possible at all stages of a relationship with a Chinese woman. If you indeed decide to come to China to teach, or just stay for an extended period, then you can either immerse yourself willingly or unwillingly; one way or another you're going to get hit between the eyes with a cultural wake-up call. Some people come and actually adjust to the culture, people, food, and environment. But most leave within a few weeks or months after arriving. Well I already know I would want to leave after a year or 2. I lived in Japan for 2 years and I had enough of it after that and I really wanted to get back to the states. Now that I have left I want to go back and live there again for another year or 2. I believe I would feel the same about China, especially since I worked my butt off here in the states to secure a degree in a medical profession that allows me to live a comfortable life.

    Teaching in China?

http://www.oxfordsem...hp?city=Orlando I was looking at that program, it is $1200 for apparently (3)? different certificates or is it all just wrapped into a general category. Either way, is that dollar amount the going rate for the course? Oh I was also thinking, if my wife earned a Bachelors in Business or International Business here, she would be very marketable in China? If that was the case, then her income should more than enough to supplement whatever I make.
  19. Hello! So I got a crazy idea. I would love to live in China for a year or 2, but the only problem is trying to set all that up and finding a job that would give me a somewhat decent life style. Many job postings require a person to have a Bachelors degree, and I have a little over a year to go to get my Bachelors in Health Sciences. My target city would Zhangzhou or Xiamen, because that is where my wife is from. I have seen the salary listing anywhere from 6000 RMB a month to 18000 RMB a month, now given the fact I have 0 experience teaching that I would be in lower end of that pay. So what did some of you do before you headed on over there for a teaching career? I was thinking about saving about $50k and debt free and live off that and the salary as a teacher, that way I would still have a pretty comfortable lifestyle. That's what I was thinking though, saving a lot of money up here and just grabbing a teaching job as an excuse to stay in country and not really relying on the salary they offer you. Im sure I missed some more details , but that's why I have you guys!
  20. The day my wife would need to dumpster dive to save money is the day she would book a 1 way ticket back to China.
  21. As long as the phone is unlocked, he can pop in any sim card and be ready to go. It might not replace his GF, but he can impress other girls with his new iphone and acquire a new one
  22. In going through this thread just now, Mick said the two cents that I was about to add! Why use an attorney when the resources here at Candle are more in the know (perhaps not the best way of wording it, but, I also think accurate), and less of a burden on the wallet! Well whatever guys, if he wants to blow the money on that, oh well. Not much we can do, my feelings aren't hurt if he chooses a lawyer and said such lawyer screws him over because they don't know what they are doing and he had the full trust and confidentiality of that lawyer. Of course if he finds someone knowledgeable then easy sailing, the K-1 is a pretty straightforward visa.
  23. I would suggest you sell the iphone here and send wire him the money. Seems like a much easier trouble free fix!
  24. I think this advice really depends on the person. I know plenty of 20 year old's that have never stepped a foot outside the city they were raised in, or have never worked a day in their life, or any type of financial responsibility. I blame parenting on this part, that feed into a child's laziness. I know plenty of young adults who are failures at life because there isn't a mentor in their life constantly telling them the correct route to take. In his defense, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders and seems to be goal oriented. In my situation, I felt I needed to rush things because I wanted to enroll my wife into college ASAP so we could both have established careers, prolonging it another 2 or 3 years would only delay the inevitable. If your 100% sure this is what you want, then you have my full support. Anyways I am getting off my soap box. People that don't physically know you should get of their high horse!!
