  1. He doesn't complain. I learned some from him. But I wish I could complain sometimes, like now.
  2. This is so great, Jany. Thanks for thinking of us and for the update. We love to hear such a happy ending.
  3. My friend when to Guangzhou last week to pickup her visa. She promised to call me when visa is in hand, but she hasn't yet. Don't be upset with your husband. It is a lot of stress for both of you. As long as the visa is issued, he can always return to Guangzhou to pick it up. Good luck!
  4. I would not like to debate on any single food item whether it is contaminated, or poisoned, etc. There are a lot of concerns to the food supply in China. As market economy grows at such a speed, the regulatory agencies are not able to keep up with all the new inventions, etc. (However. It is not just Chinese who would cheat to get the extra profit. Bad business moral exist in any culture.) I am glad to see American people are turning toward less process food and hate to see food processing in China is developing so fast and it improves food preparation efficiencies but pushes people to change their original healthier pattern of food consumption. Things always has two sides. It is too easy to criticize. Ask you guys a fair question, with all the shelf full of FDA approved food items in US grocery stores, do you really think they are that healthy? You can eat all the pure food but still get sick. How many people really know what the labels mean to them? P.S., I am very concerned about the milk products in China. It is a bad thing.

  6. ....In ancient times, men were always more at risk... ergo, maybe more woman existed; it may of been a very simply solution to an issue we can never comprehend.... I have heard such rumor that after the Korean war in late 1950s, it was common for household to have more wives in North Korean, simply because a lot of men were killed during the war.

  8. Get a few small pack kleenex. I mean the 10-sheet little packs. One (or two) pack can easily fit in your pocket or a lady's handbag. - available in all convenient stores in China Get a few small packs of wet tissue, to clean hands and places that you need to clean. - available in most drug stores, grocery stores in China You may find toilet seat cover in small packs. Those can be useful. - This could be hard to find in China. (Can only find them in a few big Chain grocery stores) Hangers. No. You can always ask for more in hotels, or to buy locally.
  9. Avoid stepping in flowing streams and puddles of water... I walk to ESL with a younger Chinese friend each week. On the way she will avoid all water on the sidewalks, even if it is simply from watered lawns. I know the reason now - so obvious. While in Nanning this year, I learned how important it is to always watch wherever you step, as there may be recessed pipes in an unsuspectimg gutter in a restuarant threshold or something jutting out into the sidewalk...you never know and if not vigilant and aware... I saw this happenning in Philidelphia. The septic pipes were plugged below street level. wastes oozed out whenever there was a heavy rain. The apartment manager knew about it, but never got it taken care of to the date we moved out.

  14. You can bet on it... Some of the best Cuban cigars I've smoked were seized by border crossing guards... No doubt, but I'm sure the civil forfeiture proceedings required that the government somehow take these butterflies---but it never said what they do with them.... Humh... My other question at that time--- butterflies are endangered species?? They have such a short life span.... Oh well, I'm guessing on flights from Brazil, maybe this was a common thing. I think maybe this is a common thing they find?? I would better be careful next time when packing my luggages.
  15. Some would call that job security. If I werethe inspector, it would even be better if I get to eat them "prohibited meat" product of my choice.
  16. Thanks for this info. I thought the regulation only limits the raw meat, not cooked.

  19. Thanks friends, for your comforting words. B) I would also like to warn other fellow travellers that don't waste your money and luggage space on things like that.
  20. We changed plane in Toronto. We were supposed to take out our luggages and drag them through US custom at Toronto airport (powerful US government ), then check them back in. Our luggages were delayed, so we passed the custom without them, and they arrived a day after we arrive at NYC handled by the airline. I was surprised that all packages of delicious Sichuan beef jerky were missing. In their place was a note showing that the luggage piece was opened for inspection and there were "prohibited meat". A friend told me that I should be expecting a huge fine of several hundard dollars. B)
