  1. Can China also forget then the atrocities committed by Japan on them during WW2? Forgive and forget? Japan has moved forward too (actually). We pick and choose what is forgettable, and what fills us with rage at the very mention. Or does the state/media? Remember the anger sessions in 1984? Textbook stuff. Direct the people's anger outward. Baa. It is much easier to tear open other's wound than own. Very true, Joanne. I wish we could all be aware of that and use it as a stepping stone to looking into places we are typically scared to look, and with a more open mind. yes, with an open mind. The problem is who would know which mind is more open.
  2. You can download forms from US consulate/embassy websites in China, they provided forms targeted at Chinese applicants: http://shanghai.usembassy-china.org.cn/non...rant_visas.html http://beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn/niv_info.html http://chengdu.usembassy-china.org.cn/visas.html For my parents' visa (they applied twice over the past few years, both granted the visa), I didn't supply any invitation letter. Instead, I wrote to the visa officer to explain the situation (purpose of visit, length of stay, etc.) A less-than-one page letter, easy to read, signed by both my husband and me. If your wife has siblings, it is better to bring documents showing siblings secure job situation in China. Basically, use all means to demonstrate parents' ties to China, to show that they will return. If they come and returned as planned, it will be a lot easier to apply next time. We didn't provide sponsorship documents. In fact, for their first visit, our financial situation was not that great, and I explained that my parents would pay their own way. They did bring their bank info and property paper to the interview, but were not required to show. We supplied proof of employment, copies of passports and my green card, etc. It is good to bring photos showing the parents and you together. Good luck!

  4. Joanne, peace to you. Yes, truth is transient. History is in control of those who write it. Do you know Renee Chiang? She is a co-editor of this book and was a teacher in Beijing in 1989. And do you really think the publishers of this book are anti-China and why? Is it about New Century Press in Hong Kong? If you prefer not to answer here or via PM that is fine. I am not able to answer your question, because I don't know the truth.
  5. Zhao Ziyang is responsible for the military massacre? Failed as a politician? You said you are from the north in Beijing. Ask some from the south where Zhao served in Guangdong and elsewhere. Then read his own words about it and the context. Maybe he is lying and this is all a plot by anti-China forces as you say. Many Chinese who participated at Tiananman and around the country disagree with you. I would be interested in your knowledge that this book is funded by, like people in your family, who are in anti-Chinese organizations. Your post reads rather biased. Joanne's post came off too strong, but ...... Well, I re-read what I wrote and I agree that my post "came off too strong". I am always very disturbed facing this topic. If I have a chance to write my opinions again. It would still be the same. I think I made it very clear as they are only my opinions. Everybody's action will lead to consequences. The consequence might not be desired. History is a closed black box. Who can say he knows the truth?

  7. Zhao may be a good person, but he failed as a politician. He is partially the cause of the June 4 incident, in my opinion. If anyone who experience the who episode, you might have remembered the months. The protects across the country started a month or two before June 4. Chinese government had been trying to keep the protests calm and violence free for that long. I was a young teacher at the university. So I knew both sides. Emotionally, I was totally with the students, we went to the street with them to protest. On the other hand I was also aware of the principles the officials held concerning the protests. It was basically: Students have good intentions. Let them vent, but safety first. Eventually, it was close to the time that many students would leave school for the summer. We all experienced that things became quieter and quieter. Zhao's coming out to visit students at the Tian An Men square did in fact light up people's enthusiasm again which brought forth an uncontrollable wave of protests. Zhao might have known this. He might have felt guilty all the years later. He might realized that he unintentionaly made a mistake along that political decision process. I was with the student during those months in 1989. During the first month after I arrived US in 1991, I spend hours researching in a US university library looking for evidents to support my accusation of Chinese government. What I found was not what I sought for. I remember writing my view on CFL almost every year approaching June 4 since I joined. I am tired of this topic. But I hate to have people mislead by the media who loves sensational topics. I have no doubt the publication of this book about Zhao is funded by organizations supported by anti-China.... I have a relative who is an activist in one of those groups. That is how he makes a living. We are just common people, don't try to make sense of the world of politics. If you want to be a politician, you need to learn more to be a good one. If you are not born to condemn or be biased agains certain group, please stand back and observe from different angles of an issue.
  8. Zhao Ziyang could have been a great leader if China had a political system like US. Since he was a member of the CCP, he is subjected to the CCP rule and decipline.
  9. This is really a good news. Maybe I will just let it be. Save the tickets, so that you can show the it was a single day over stay. Good luck!
  10. Hi cguo7, I am a Chinese. I feel very sorry for you. It would be unbearable for me if the colleagues I work with are not friendly. I don't know how your interact with them daily, but I got an impression from what you wrote that you ignored each other lately in the office. This is not normal. Since it would be pointless to tell them what to do, I suggest that you try to make a change yourself. Ask your boyfriend to teach you a few basic greeting words in Chinese, use them as often as possible. If you don't know what to say, simply smile. Your colleague will get to understand that you are making an effort to be friendly. Forget about today's incident. It could be purely misunderstanding. You may find out later or it could stay as a mystery forever, doesn't matter. Wish you better days in future.
  11. She should not eat. There is a blood test requires no food prior to the test.
  12. Do you wish that Lan read this and hurry home?
  13. And not just a real man, but a good man haha That's evidence enough.
  14. Our daughter gets excited at every mentioning or photos of the Great Wall. I will take her there this summer. I can hardly wait. Joann I am kind of like your daughter when I see pictures of the beautiful places in China. My wife on the other hand has very little interest in any place in China except Beijing. This disheartens me somewhat. Larry I know your feeling.

  16. It seems, David, that you have just thrown out another tangled heap of yarn for us to sort out. Have fun, boys and girls!
  17. Is this the rice she would use for daily cooking or for some special dishes. The sticky rice (or sometimes called sweet rice) are difficult to find. However, for daily cooking, I found sushi rice is probably close to what we use to eat in north China.
  18. One example is my husband. He lived in China from 1998 to 2005. This past summer, he spent the maximum amount of time there. He plans to spend most of his vacation time in China in future. I would not be surprised that we move back there in 3 years.
  19. This is great news. Congratulations!
  20. Only that it is my newest addiction. - let's get back to the topic.
  21. Poor Dennis! I thought with the Christian faith, you wouldn't need to be troubled by such moral delimmas. It would be so easy to take the moral high road and put your mind at ease and never to regret your decision (of revealing the "truth" to Al). However, what outcome would be best for the two involved? It seems the group of you (Lieqin, her sister and even you) have to play "god" for them now. You might make it better for them or you may not. Whatever the outcome, you have to live with the consequence. It is riskier for you not to tell Al. But there would be hope for them. There is the middle road which have been suggested by others, that is, not exactly revealing the whole truth, but inject enough info to Al so that he knows the possibility of being "victim" (or winner) of the switch game. I like this approach. If I were you, I would ask Leiqin not to be mingled with her sister's match making game anymore. After all it is scam.
  22. Due to my recent busy schedule (partly due to my viewing the 30 episode TV series which is shown on Jiangsu TV right now), I haven't get into Candle for quite a while. It is nice to see your summary of life in China, and knowing that all three of your are doing well. Please pass my greetings to Lan. Happy Spring Festival!
  23. Thank you very much, everyone, for your advices. My friends have received these advices and feel much more comfortable now about the issue. They decide to let daughter attend CC and then transfer to a 4-year university. I will also pass along the option of getting a high school equivelant certificate. Thanks again!
