  1. The main reason we have improved sanitation in this country is because it is currently required for doctors treating food poisoning to tract the source and report to health departments and CDC. USDA monitors and or enforces recalls of tainted or adulterated products every month. Each month some employee foul up or company cost cutting kills in this country witthout any help from any other nationality. Because USDA monitors most meat and poultry production on a daily basis it is relatively safe. Most food poisoning involves retail or home level mishandling and produce. This is because produce (and seafood) are under the FDA. Since they have no system to monitor production or distribution, we are trusting these products to honesty, wisdom and attentiveness by the food handlers. Soon this will be the new and improved way of protecting meat and poultry products too. as congress continues to consider merging the two and has already reshaped much of USDA on a FDA model. USDA RECALLS
  2. Yi HHHHAAAAAA go get them Jim. Willthey fly her out so that negotiations can start knowing that this is not a commitment from you? Wouldn't hurt to ask. Then if you turn them down you still got something. Oh by the way we do more than surf out here dudes. THis morning I did my Sunday morning ride on horseback in the hills nearby. So when will we see you out our way again?
  3. Zojirushi is the most expensive brand from Japan. We bought one for a friends wedding present in China. There are so many out now. Some will cook a large variety of items and even have white, brown and wild rice settings.
  4. Warning labels on foods are becoming common in Cali because of a law that makes manufacturers libel for the naturally ocurring elements of ordinary food not just because of additives. Bread was under attack and now cooked meat and poultry. Cooking turns the proteins into a low risk carcinogen that Cali requires warnings for. This means national brands need Cali specific packaging or face law suits. Lawyers have sued many companies recently hitting them with class action suits that are making these previously impoverished lawyers rich. The law has a zero tolerance so any level of the chemical requires warnings. Congress tried to pass a law that would stop this but our fine senators got the votes needed to defeat it. Only in Cali Having done the rodeo bull riding thing, I'm used to taking risks, even in California Dan! Those California warnings don't scare me, I'll be back! As aye, Jim Glad to hear it Jim. Actually we post those signs to scare away the timid and weak. I didn't think it would keep you away

  6. That electric wok will be good for frying french fries in deep fat. To be fair,in Chinese homes, people cook with electric woks and little electric burners. If she is used to cooking with electric, like many college students living in small apartments do,then she will be able to cook some very good food. You cant use this kind of wok to cook "real" Chinese food, but it can be use to cook authentic "home cooked" Chinese dishes. If you buy a wok, either a "real" one,or one with a flat spot on the bottom for electric stoves, make sure its heavy and good quality, but not fancy and expensive. I would expect that in America you can go to a Chinesemarket,or restaurant supply and get a REAL Chinese wok,the best choice. If you have a gas burner, then a real wok is fine, but dont try touse a round bottomed wok on an American electric stove.Youmust get one with a flat spot on the bottom. For the round bottom wok they sell a ring it sets in that will hold it well on a gas stove. Personally I have never seen an electric wok that can heat high enough or change temp fast enough to avoid burning if it gets hot enough. Teflon also does not get hot enough to stir fry. Don't try to guess what will work. Spend your time finding the nearest Asian store with real cookware. Then when she arrives take her there to outfit her kitchen. This is the best way to make her feel it is her kitchen. Dan, you forgot to add that even most gas burner stove tops cannot heat a wok to the appropriate heat. Stir fryers normally quick sear food at high temps. So, does the style of the wok really matter when the heat source isn't adequate? We have no problem with our gas stove heating hot enough. Our oil coated walls and exhaust hood are proof of it Besides almost hot enough is better than nearly warm. Well, you've seen our older stove. It won't heat no wok in no way that it should. Makes good noodles though. But, what do I know? Just ask Leiqin. Let's see what she says. I think your stove works just fine. Oh and don't you owe David and I a breakfast for skipping out last Saturday

  9. Who knows if the Chinese are our friends or not, but with regards to the question of are the Chinese trying to poison Americans, I think the honest answer is that America is doing a fine job of poisoning ourselves. The amount of fattening , ultra sweet, and rich/creamy food we eat is more than enough to poison us all. And with the number of McDonalds and KFCs popping up in China, I would counter-argue that America is doing a pretty good job of poisoning the Chinese population. Yup by diet and exporting our sedentary repetitive jobs overseas We Will Overvome Someday!
  10. Marry anywhere you want in the U.S. after she arrives. As long as you have a certified marriage certificate you are in free. I recommend that you request extra certified copies. I ordered three and have one left to keep.
  11. If you are swept away by love you wont recognize warnings as you trip over them. Those are clear only too late. You might also do the same because you want to take a chance on major change to your life. Everyone tries things. Chinese tend to be more opportunistic, but don't we convince ourselves as much as anything. You give it a try and if it doesn't work you try something else. The rest is emotional baggage. Sounds harsh but it works out that way over time no matter how you look at it. If it works that's fantastic, no need to try again.
  12. No just maximizing profits and using what is easily available and works well. Lead based paints are widely used in China. I remember things changed when we took lead based paint off the market here. It really did coat better and resist flaking better. Items I have made in China I have to fight to get what I am paying for. One problem is often the dyes and paints. Some used have to be aired out for weeks because of the bad odors even after they are dry.
  13. Chinese medicine does work. Herbal medicine is worldwide with each locale utilizing local plants. I use them as well as sell herbal and aromatherapy medicinals. Guasha and cupping are good for internal stagnation and detoxification. I sell guasha scrapers online. Vietnamese simply use a coin or spoon. Except for heavy bacterial infections (twice in 10 years) I haven't been to a Western doctor in the ten years. Any medicine can have interactions or reactions. They are much less with herbals than Western Medicine drugs.
  14. Ping tolerates my desire to visit historic places. Her choice is new modern = clean and fresh. Old things outlived their usefulness and seem a waste of space and time. Change is inevitable, move on.
  15. Actually if there is an I-9 audit at the company by immigration before she gets her EAD the company would be fined not her. Most companies do not check the expiration dates more than once a year so the likelihood of her being asked to leave is small. As far as the company being caught, as an employer for 30 years I have been audited once. And that is inspite of the fact I am in a highly suspect industry.
  16. I visited the home of Qing Ling in Shanghai. It had some amazing photos of Modern Chinese personalities. Definitely she is my favorite of the three. They were all educated in the U.S. Soong sisters A photograph of the three Soong sisters together. http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/1/15/Soong_sisters.jpg The Soong sisters (ËμҽãÃà pinyin: S¨°ngji¨¡ Ji¨§m¨¨i, or ËÎÊÏÈý½ãÃÃ) were three women whose husbands were amongst China's most significant political figures of the early 20th century. It was famously said that "one loved money, one loved power, and one loved China" (Ò»‚€ÛåX¡¢Ò»‚€Û™à¡¢Ò»‚€Û‡ø; Hanyu pinyin: y¨ª ge a¨¬ qi¨¢n, y¨ª ge a¨¬ qu¨¢n, y¨ª ge a¨¬ gu¨®). The three sisters were: Soong Ai-ling (Simplified Chinese: ËΰªÁä; Traditional Chinese: ËÎÌ@ýg; pinyin: S¨°ng Àil¨ªng; Wade-Giles: Sung Ai-ling), the eldest and the one who "loved money," was married to the richest man and finance minister of China, H. H. Kung. Soong Ching-ling (Simplified Chinese: ËÎÇìÁä; Traditional Chinese: ËΑcýg; pinyin: S¨°ng Q¨¬ngl¨ªng; Wade-Giles: Sung Ch'ing-ling) , the one who "loved China," was married to Father of Modern China and first President of the Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen. She became joint President of the People's Republic of China with Dong Biwu from 1968 to 1972 and Honorary President in 1981, just before the passing of the Consitution of 1982. Soong May-ling (Simplified Chinese: ËÎÃÀÁä; Traditional Chinese: ËÎÃÀýg; pinyin: S¨°ng M¨¦il¨ªng; Wade-Giles: Sung Mei-ling), youngest and the one who "loved power," was married to the leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) , Generalissimo of the Chinese armies, and later President, Chiang Kai-shek. Their father was American-educated Methodist minister Charlie Soong, who made a fortune in banking. Their three brothers were all high ranking officials in the Republic of China government, one of whom was the famous T.V. Soong. A film (The Soong Sisters) depicting the lives of the Soong sisters was made in 1997. External links
  17. It is all the same in Chinese. "Ta" but why is it so hard to learn the English? Kinda gives you a start when she says, "I'm going to stay at my friend's hotel room tonight. He just came from China and we have so much to catch up on. Maybe in the morning we can all have breakfast together." Yum Uh Yeh Well Uh. "Wait till you see him, he was the prettiest girl in our school."
  18. Gee Roger Luli must have some good connections to have known about the earthquake a month early. That was what made you decide to sell the Yunnan place wasn't it Now with the potential of major earthquakes bringing down the place how much do you want for the high riisk place? (psst Rog did you confirm that they wanted you at the opening ceremony as the official sacrifice? I hope you get out in time) You can have it for a song Dan... Tell 'ya one thing Dan...I definitely do NOT want to be spending the summer on Hainan... Qionghai forecast for the next week: highs 95-93, lows 82-80... Yuxi, Yunnan: highs 80-78, lows 69-66... And did you check the humidity to go with those temps? Being from Cali I'm not so worried about an earthquake that is only 6.4. But the Hainan humidity now that scares me!
  19. Well I haven't felt any ill effects from my Chinese toothpaste so I'll finish the tube. If I don't show up for a couple weeks tell them to check his toothpaste. THe one I like best is from Korea. It is made with bamboo salt from the same company as my shower gel.

  21. There is nothing like good mountain air and a firm carpet to make one sleep good
  22. Like the Jews, Chinese communities are found world wide. A Japanese friend who is an export consultant once told me that in every country his clients have distributors or agents they are all either Chinese or Jewish. Some of the countries would surprise you. South Africa - Chinese Argentina - Jewish Sri Lanka - Jewish Jamaica - Chinese to name a few. A couple years ago a Chinese Jewish family in China for 1000 years used the right of return to emigrate to Israel. That left only 7 families in the city that in 1100 had thousands. In 160 there was a Roman city in China. Roman coins used in commerce are found as far as Korea. Plato blamed the Chinese silk trade and use of thin silk togas for Rome's moral decay. Several dynasties allowed the building of Mosques and Synagogues in their capitols. The world has never been a very big place in comparison to Mankinds ability to roam.
  23. No way will China follow Singapore. Singapore is more regulated than the U.S.. Why you can't even spit on the sidewalk without being fined.
  24. She tries what she wants, asks if it concerns her and we go forward wiser after the mistakes. More importantly why won't she use pot holders. It would have been cheaper than replacing the wok and pots with cool handled ones. Oh well that's done.
  25. What about the other years??? Rat, dog, Ox.... PC is slowly creeping into China too. However, I suppose they're quite smart to cowtow to their small (2 million of 2% of the population) ethnic Muslims. Such a small gesture may reap benefits in the long run. Seems a misdirected attempt to court the muslim nations. They are long time opponents of the US in the middle east and antiIsrael. With Russia in a weak economic position China's rise leaves it in a good position to benefit. Actually there is nothing in Islamic teachings against live pigs just that pork is not edible. Aside from the Arab nations of the middle east they could also be trying to strengthen their relationship with Pakistan, Iran and Indonesia with who they are allied.
