China's village gets UNESCO award for cultural heritage conservation

This photo taken on Nov. 11, 2018 shows the external wall of Aijing Zhuang residential complex in Yangwei Village of Yongtai County, southeast China's Fujian Province. The project, with a total of 361 rooms covering an area of over 5,200 square meters, was built during the reign of Emperor Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It has safeguarded the authentic character of the housing, its defensive structures and waterways that are emblematic of this site, providing a model for other historic villages across China. The conservation of Aijing Zhuang residential complex demonstrates a sensitive approach to sustaining a rural settlement as a living place in harmony with its natural setting. Aijing Zhuang in November this year received the Award of Merit in the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. (Xinhua/Zhang Guojun)

The sign of The Great Show by Dolce & Gabbana is removed from the exterior of Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center in Shanghai, Nov 21. The show was cancelled hours before it was scheduled to get underway on Wednesday evening, after its latest "DG Loves China" online marketing ads came under fire for trivializing China's centuries-old culture and depicting Chinese woman in a stereotypical and even racist way. ...coins belong to Song Dynasty (960-1279).

I wonder how many coins ended up in construction worker's pockets?

A fascinating story of the farmers from nearby villages who work for the festival in their off-season - from the Sixth Tone.

An interesting video that's in the article, but you can watch here - http://video1.sixthtone.com/video/5/0/149.mp4

The Farmers Who Carve Frozen Rivers for the Harbin Ice Festival

Meet the men behind the building blocks for China’s biggest winter wonderland.

Quote
Most haven't been to the festival in years, since the tickets are "too expensive", at ¥330, or around $50USD. The festival apparently got its start from farmers who were suddenly idled by the oncoming winter, but were able to redirect their labor to carving large blocks of ice (400 to 700 kg) from the Songhua River.

They are experts at what they do obviously and I hope that they have them reinforced somehow. After all, ice is ice and it will move just like a glacier flow. They keep building them larger and larger I am afraid that there is going to be a failure one day and folks will get hurt. That is if the old farmers keep on doing it as it says there are just a few that still do this kind of work.
