#Kite shop in Beijing continues to fly high after 100 years

There is a century-old kite store at the Di'anmen West Avenue in Beijing, the only existing royal kite store in the capital. The owner is Liu Bin, who is the fourth generation inheritor of Sanshizhai kite.

Sanshizhai kite, originally an entertainment item for the ancient nobles, has a history of hundreds of years, and it sustains the traditional way of making royal kite. From the framework to paste painting, it is all handmade. First, fine-quality moso bamboo is selected to dry in the shade for three years before being used to make kite. The workmanship is also quite exquisite and the pattern design on the kite contains rich cultural connotations.

Sanshizhai kite, featuring a major representative of Beijing kite, has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage item. (via China Daily)

Rite of Spring, a new dance work by China’s iconic choreographer and dancer Yang Liping, will be on stage of Sadler’s Wells Theatre from 9-11 May, 2019.

Rite of Spring is the second contemporary dance work by Yang.

With a world-class creative team she will interpret the original Stravinsky musical narrative of ritual sacrifice from Chinese and Tibetan perspectives.

It’s her belief the Rite of Spring is a work about the conflict of “nature” time versus “human” time; the inevitably of nature (Spring) against the human need for control (sacrifice).

The Tibetan animal symbols of the Peacock (nature) and the Lion (human order) are inspiration for the movement language.

The Peacock as the sacrificial victim will dutifully volunteer herself in the knowledge her death will result in reincarnation

Sedans driven on glass #skywalk in south China's Guandong in bold challenge

Two tourists take on the challenge of driving cars on the #glass skywalk on Nandan Mountain in Foshan, south China's #Guangdong province, on October 24, 2018. The challenge was meant to test the weight-bearing capacity of the glass skywalk. It's been evaluated by technicians that the glass skywalk could hold 1,000 people at the same time, which equals the weight of about 100 tons. [Photo: IC]
