The project, with a total of 361 rooms covering an area of over 5,200 square meters, was built during the reign of Emperor Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It has safeguarded the authentic character of the housing, its defensive structures and waterways that are emblematic of this site, providing a model for other historic villages across China. The conservation of Aijing Zhuang residential complex demonstrates a sensitive approach to sustaining a rural settlement as a living place in harmony with its natural setting. Aijing Zhuang in November this year received the Award of Merit in the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The festival apparently got its start from farmers who were suddenly idled by the oncoming winter, but were able to redirect their labor to carving large blocks of ice (400 to 700 kg) from the Songhua River. from Inkstone The ice men cometh Edited December 26, 2020 by Randy W (see edit history) 1 Link to comment

After all, ice is ice and it will move just like a glacier flow. They keep building them larger and larger I am afraid that there is going to be a failure one day and folks will get hurt. That is if the old farmers keep on doing it as it says there are just a few that still do this kind of work. Link to comment
