It seems very poor people always have cigarettes, and a dog. The poor people I knew in Ohio always had money for cigarettes, beer, cell phone, cable TV, and a 50inch TV, but no money for rent, or food.

Before legalized gambling arrived in many states. The poor supported the organized crime numbers rackets. Now they support the state lotteries. They view it as the only chance to escape poverty.

Okay, so there are poor people in China.

And poor people in the US.

And poor people in pretty much every country, province, county, and city in the world.

Now what?

Ok I said that I was through with the poor post but Rob drew me out Rob and I have had so many PM"s from people supporting me that I had to make just one more post.

Rob if you have ever, ever, ever seen a single post that I made saying anything remotely about that there were no poor people in America please highlight it and make a link to it and bring it to light for everyone to see. I have seen documentaries of the squalor that homeless people live in under the subway systems of New York City. I have never see seen that first hand but I feel in my mind and heart that it exists and these reports are not lies.

Another thing is what gives with the pictures from you aren't you the one that jumped on me about me posting pictures from China shoving them down people throats here when actually Tony and Charles posted the pictures but you must have missed that in your zeal to attack me instead of getting your facts straight before posting.

Are there poor people in America yes I have been harping on that too but at least in America any one of these people can go to the emergency room of any public hospital that I know of in America and get treatment. They can go to the public assistance (welfare department) people and get funding, churches and almost every city, town and yes even my little village has free soup kitchen's where anyone can go and get a free meal. I don't know about all senior citizens centers in other places but the one in our community provides two free meals a day for anyone that need it and will even bring it to you where ever you are even if it is under an overpass. Many cities provide shelters that people can stay at for free for a designated period of time at least. At least they can get out of the freezing cold at night.

I think that I have told my story of how I grew up so if your are trying to tell me about poverty in America you are to late I've already been there.

By the way that top picture looks kind of like where I lived except we did not have a refrigerator. I think I mentioned already. Poor is not a China thing, American, thing, India thing, Haiti thing or a Africa thing its a world thing. There are two reason that I bring it up about China is that I am mostly interested in China because we all have Chinese wives and the other thing is that SOME of you guys here seem to think

it don't exist in China because of all the good news of China's economy. I think that is wonderful but don't you think that some of those billion airs (second only to America) should start to just a little MORE of the wealth trickle down to these people. I believe that someone pointed out after all that most of them were government officials. I wonder how they go to be billion airs. Does that thought ever occur to you that perhaps the folks that are in control are keeping the lions share for themselves.

Larry,

The last time I was in China the CP had their 17th Party Congress. The main topic Hu Jintao spoke at length about was how "we" should concentrate on helping the poor in rural areas.

What he did not say was the reason for doing so: Mao started his revolution in the poverty ridden areas.

I note with interest that most of the agitation in China is in the rural areas. Witness the people who stormed the "palace" doors when the earthquake hit in western China recently. And how the CP responded quickly to their protest.

Corruption was also the other main topic. Just this week there was a major crackdown on corruption in Chongqing. And other arrests for child slavery.

But yes, there are billionaires in China, mostly Hong Kong and Shanghai. Just as with poverty, there will be corruption and greed.

And of course, people who have been in squalor will choose smoking and gambling and drugs anyday when there is no perception of escape.

I remember the "alarm clock" myth when I first started work in poverty in another life. The elites in government felt the reason why poor people could not keep a job was they did not have alarm clocks to get them up in the morning. So they got alarm clocks for them in the targeted area. They were not only late more but later than they were before the study. It's ingrained in the lifestyle and difficult to overcome.

The term "benign neglect" is usually sold as the most viable way of dealing with poverty. Daniel Patrick Moynihan also supported the guaranteed annual income, which also would have been a disaster.

I like Clinton's response: It's the economy, stupid.

I don't think this was aimed specifically at you Larry. I saw no mention of your name.

Yes Carl I agree but I do think that the intention of the post is very obvious.

I am trying to keep my mouth shut about this issue but it keeps coming back. It is like a lady here that told me by PM "it is not our job to clear their eyes about the poor people in China" I told her that she was right and that I would not post on it and now I have broken my promise to her for that I am sorry but I just could not help myself one more time.

Thank you Carl

Want prosperity? Index ranks Finland as place to be. For those who value their freedom of expression as much as health, wealth, and prosperity, then Finland is the place to be, with an index ranking the Nordic nation the best in the world.

The top 10 were all also Western nations, with Australia (6th place) and Canada (7th place) both beating the United States, ranked 9th. Britain came in at number 12.

China, with its tight political controls, came in 75th despite booming economic growth.

And the world's least prosperous country? According to the Legatum Index, it is Zimbabwe, with Sudan and Yemen close runners-up.

I am curious Rob.........were you born and raised here in the United States?

Just my observation but you really seem to have an axe to grind and I am wondering if it has to do with your personal experiences being raised in the USA?

He is our cousin. He is British.
