ameriken
After my SO comes to America, sometime in the future we intend to go back to China permanently. Will her emigration to the US affect her Chinese ID, govt benefits, etc in China? What will happen to her Chinese Citizenship status if she comes to the US and are there any other consequences from her emigration? Also, my own emigration from the US to China.........I also assume it will affect things like Social Security retirement, etc? Thanks for all of your input, Ken Link to comment

Joanne
As long as she is not naturalized and does not become a US citizen, she will still be a Chinese citizen, and get to keep Hukou and ID. As what I understand now, she may elect to take out all the money in her retirement funds, but she can also keep the account active. Don't know much detail about the procedure. I should check this out. Thanks from reminding me! Link to comment
HanLi
Ken,this is something we talked about on the plane, and I am definitely interested to know some of the hoops that have to be jumped through also... thanks for the post... Link to comment
cosmiclobster
Even though my wife will become a permanent resident of the US, she has her govt. retirement account and health benefits that she is still paying into. From what I understand, she will be able to collect her retirement benefits while living in the US and will continue to have almost free health care when she is in China.Similarly, my brother is collecting his retirement and living in Cambodia. His checks are direct deposited into his account in the US and he has access to it there, but he may be using our mom's address as his legal residence. Not too sure about this. If someone finds out the exact requirments, please post them! Link to comment
Orrin
I looked into this while I was living in China 4 years ago. What has been said earlier is true. As long as your wife doesn't become a naturalized US citizen, she retains her Chinese national status. The same holds true for you. You can obtain a Chinese "green card" after residing in China with you wife for 5 contiguous years. You are still a US citizen, and can apply for all of your entitled benefits such as Social Security retirement. You can arangement for a direct deposit of your monthly SS payment through Bank of China, which has brbanches in California and NYC. Link to comment
Randy W
I assume you will remain an American citizen. If so, then you will keep yous SS, retirement benefits, everything you are entitled to here. I think that they can be mailed to a foreign address without any problem - but you may not want to use a Chinese address, since it most likely will not be printed in Chinese characters. It seems to me that it is most advantageous to keep her Chinese citizenship, along with whatever benefits come with that. The catch is that she will have to maintain her green card with annual visits to the US. However, my SO at one point said that she wanted to become an American citizen, and didn't think there was any disadvantage to that. Link to comment

skibum
SS asks that you notify them if you will be out of the country for a certain length of time. I don't know why and personally don't think it is their business. Beware that Medicare is probably not going to work in China. It does say there are some exceptions but I did not check into them . My wife has had trouble getting her retirement from the company she worked for. Will try next time she is in China. Link to comment

jbray
About the Chinese retirement insurance (Chinese SS), my wife was told that she couldn't keep her account active, if she was living outside of China. So, she tried to take the money out that she had put in. They let her take about about %45... Link to comment
