  1. Thanks all members of CFL. Gerald really enjoyed the time that he spent on the forum. The members of the forum gave him a lot of support. Thank you so much. When he was unable to pursue outdoor activities, he spent hour after hour in front on the computer. Even though he later became unable to reply to posts, he still read all of your posts. Those posts give him happiness and good memories. Hope everyone has as wonderful marriage as we had. Gerald passed away last Friday. He gave me a big smile when I embraced him that night. He then closed his eyes for the final time. I am so lucky to married him, and to have enjoyed such great memories. Thank you David making all links for us. Yirong and family Greetings, I was unaware of this website until a few weeks ago. I had no idea that my Dad had so many people who he shared his thoughts and memories with. Thank all of you for being a part of my Dad¡¯s life. I look forward to reading your supportive postings. Thank you again for being there throughout one of his happiest times, namely the last five years with Yirong. She definitely made his last years the happiest. Good luck to all of you, Ken
  2. I have asked several times why people get married in China. Anyone care to inform me? It seems like a lot more trouble and when divorce time comes I don't think shaking a white duck three times really works.
  3. Kids are the largest cause of increase of polution. The more people, the more natural resorces are used. Did anyone look at Al Gore's movie "An Inconvient Truth?" I have not but I bet it does not explain why he and Tip have four.
  4. I am having to beat on her(almost) over her use of pronouns. I guess Chinese does not use them. Is there anything else that you have had trouble with. It seems like most people understand her but her e-mails look terrable. She spells very well. I am glad I dropped all the women who knew no English. Not just Chinese. ski
  5. In about 2 months my wife will be getting her BS in accounting Before this she got a AS in Business and an AAS in IT. These are on top of her chinese degree in Petro products. So she has 4 degrees and this month she has had 14 interviews for jobs with no luck. Her grades are high but her English is very accented. A friend who has a SO in China who will be coming soon, has offered to help both of them with English since he used to teach it. So I guess she should have taken English first like I said. But she is in such a rush. Her first job was at a POLO outlet and before she left them to go to school in Denver, they wanted her to become a manager. They had many foriegn customers and she said they understand her well and she, them.
  6. I only mentioned defatting because it was in the articial. I like mine with shells on. I will be a lot better when I can walk with out the walker. Hopefully the nerves will grow back by Xmas. I can feel them trying to hook back up but wish they would hurry. The Dr says they grow about as fast as hair so I am growing a beard so I can see how fast that is.
  7. The country people have always got the short end of the stick. Through out China's history they have been the ones supporting the rest of the country. They made the silk that was a staple of government as well as feeding everyone. When the revolution ended, Mao told everyone to leave the cities alone as that is where most of the wealth came from. Most of the government industry settled in large cities and they had the most perks such as retirement and health coverage as well as free housing. Not so many years ago the country people were not allowed to move from their villages. Now that that has ended, the country population has dropped as the city population has gone up. I will guess that since 2000 300,000 have moved to the cities. Many are illegal as they don't have ID cards as they were born someplace where they should not have been. Ever since Mao ordered every one to have more children and the population doubled from about 1949 to 1985 (from memory) population numbers have been the biggest problem. He did not use them in wars like he thought he would. The voting process in the cities is nothing to make you move for. Generally an offical in the work group is elected to elect somebody else who goes to the convention and votes for whoever is going to be elected. In the villages there was a movment several years ago to let the farmers vote for whom they wanted as their leaders but I think that went back out several years ago. All the land in China belongs to the govt. You may own the building that is on it for so many years. Every time the Emperor changed, the farm layout was changed to what he thought was the best and would produce the most food and silk. Does anyone have experience with farm wives raising silk worms now? I don't believe we have anything to fear from China. What would they gain by going to war with us. They have always feared the USSR more than the US. The problems they have are theirs to fix.
  8. Anybody have directions for defating peanut skins? The biggest change I have seen in red blood count is taking Procrit shots or living at different altitudes. Recommended red blood cell counts vary by altitude. At a higher altitude you have more cells. Generally the number of cells is constant until you change altitude or get anemia which is caused by low count. When my iron count got high, I gave a quart of blood which got the iron count down. Red cells increasing with altitude keep your energy about the same at all heights. The trouble is that it takes a few days to make those cells.
  9. If she can get visa for Thailand and Cambodia, that is where I would go. Angor Wat in Cambodia and the old capital of Thailand, can't remember the name but has museums, many wats and elephant rides.
  10. In China these people have no choice; here someone can work hard and get ahead. I still cannot understand why the little girl (10) that I offered to pay for her school did not take me up on it. In the Nanjing paper they print pictures and info about kids each week who need help with school money. I guess I could have helped them. But then, I wonder why the govt can't do it if they are spending so much on the military and going to the moon.
  11. When my wife got to GZ to pick up her visa, she heard all the other ladies talking about the money their SOs gave them. My wife first thought then about why I had not been sending her money. When I told her it was because she did not need it, she understood and I think was proud to know that I thought her to be independant. Since she has been here, I have tried to fulfill her wishes- more college degrees so she can get a great job, a new condo so she will not have to mow and shovel and move back to China if possable. She talks to her friends there quite often and has learned that times are changing. Several of her friends now have cars and new condos. Inflation is happening but the standard of living is going up anyway. I have never had a money discussion with a Asian woman that I dated as all had a good standard of living because of having a college degree. I think that is a good place to start when looking for a woman. Ski
  12. Colllege work. Now is last semester and she is filling out job apps.
  13. Dr. Sun is buried in Nanjing with a large masuleum in a nice park. He has a large memorial in Taiwan as he is considered a great man by both Chinas. Near the one in Nanjing, there is a ampitheater with white pidgeons flying around and a place to have tea "with Dr. Sun." If you are ever in Nanjing, check it out. If I remember correctly, the park is Zhongshan Park.
  14. My wife has been here since 3/04 and we have had cops involved in our lives 2 times. The first was when I knocked down a VN woman in a shopping center parking lot. Her car was parked on the left hand side and another car was trying to get in a space on the other side. As I waited for the cars to clear, she kept waving me on. It was funny. I could not see her cart and that is what I hit. She was holding on it and all I could see was this round face disappearing down. SO got out and helped her up and right away she began asking for money. SO being Chinese knew what was going on and told me to get in the car, which I had parked. The cop came, the ambulance came. The cop took statements and said there was no offence. We went shopping. The second time, the asst mgr of our apt building deceided to flag the cars that did not have a parking placard in the windshield. We had both the parking one and a handicap one but this little a/h wanted SO to be towed for some reason. He was even talking in the phone saying she is going to be towed,,she is going to be towed. Meanwhile SO came up with the placard which the towtruck driver ask that she take to the asst mgr. The tow truck driver would not tow us as someone had told him that I really am handicaped. SO and him got into a shouting match as she wanted to wait in the office for the mgr. Then he called the cops. A very nice young one showed up shortly before I did. Everyone gave their story then the cop put the cuffs on SO. She was calm and later I asked her why. She is taking law this semester and was going to sue the punk. When she was in the police car, I could see them talking. He got out and went back to the renting office, said afew words and returned to the car. Took the cuffs off of SO and she left. Later she said that the cop said that someone deserves to go to jail but it is not you. After my talk with the mgr, the punk has been very quiet.
  15. I thought that every one in China used rapeseed oil. We us less than 48 oz of this in 6 months. Everyone should see a rapeseed field in full bloom. The yellow flowers are great.
  16. If she will become a USC, why not just wait and change it on that form.
  17. Between my wife learning accounting and my brilliant moves in the past , we are in better shape now that ever. We should have a net worth of over $1m. by the new year with our new condo paid for and mostly new furn. I am planning on getting a new sailboat for my son to keep on Lake Mich. The wife worries about having money when I die and I cannot convince her that she will have enough since she is making about $1000 a day on investing. Too many people don't take advantage of the opportunities avalable.
  18. My wife is very polite as she was in China. I think most westernized Chinese are.
  19. Even for a temporary move change your address. They will not forward mail (or they may forward mail) from CIS or your credit card co or maybe they will. They do not tell you this when you fill out the forwarding notice. We finally got the fingerprint notice yesterday.
  20. I think that Vanatu (sp ?) has a good land use policy. The native people own the land but they can lease it and make rent money. For private homes the lease is 50 years. The govt acts as leasing agents.
  21. Personally, I don't see what the point is for Chinese to invest here. There is money to be made there and you would not have to worry about the changes in the exchange rate and such. My mother in law has made some good trades lately on the Chinese market. She is probably doing better than I am here.
  22. As I posted before, there is a place on the citizenship application to change names so don't be in a rush. Anyone can be called anything as long as they are not doing it to do something illegal.
  23. Be aware that most countries have their own exchanges. I am sure there is a good reason. You may have your tax forms near you now. Take a look and see if there are exceptions for foriegn investors. As you know, taxes will be paid!!
  24. Sweetie just read my post and said I should add that the commission rates will be much higher for Chinese citizens. Taxes, who knows. Sounds like they are a lot better off putting their money in savings.
