  1. My wife is a Chinese citizen and she invests in the US stock markets. But I don't think that is what you are looking for. Many Chinese stocks are listed here for consumption by USCs. In China there is a dual system with one market in $ and the other in RMB. Both are for Chinese stocks. Chinese can invest here by signing up with a broker here and bringing $. The SEC makes the rules. One problem may be the language and understanding the financials printed in English. Frankly, I am most comfortable with what I know best and if I was Chinese living there, I would stick with Chinese stocks. Have you seen the storefronts with the people watching stock prices? Never have seen a picture of one here. We might have to stop saying Communist China.
  2. Roger, I think the checking of citizenship will come at the airport like when a USC tries to enter China with a Chinese pp. Think computer. The same with the US. There is also checking that would be done when a visa is applied for. How do you do it? Ski
  3. 1. It is a lot easier to manage land use when the land is not priviately owned. 2. The western part of China is mountainous and dry. The desert is moving south and the gov. is trying to reverse the trend much as Iran did under the Shah. 3. No one seems to take over- population as a problem as they do not worry about their kids and grandkids. Like the national debt.
  4. If you are toking together, I have no idea but it is used all over Asia.
  5. Paula, I bought a new Cheerokee Sport in 1984,1992 and 2000. Since they don't make them any more, I don't know what I will do. The first 2 I put about 180,000 on but this one is only up to 102,000. Just keep a eye on the fan belt/water pump. They are a good size and my wife loves it. The car is shorter than my Porsche 944 was. We use 4X almost everyday.
  6. My wife's degree in chemistry was paid for by her father's work unit which she went to work for. She did not need a GED but only a English Accuplacer test when she started class here at the Jr college. It was nice of CU-D to give her a scholarship for two semesters. Being an accountant or CPA in China is not very interesting as their regulations are not observed very well. The nurse training there is very different from here as they don't worry if someone dies. They usually don't answer buzzers at night. The last time I was in the hospital here there were two nurses from Kenya and they were good. The hospital had 27 from Kenya.
  7. I had experienced an experience of such today. Sweetie and I went to a new brokerage to change companies today and as usual, the American man was taken by sweetie and wanted her to tell him everything about China. So, I guess we can turn things around and see that many Americans don't know much about Chinese. He was amazed by the things we told him about the economy and the fact that the country is not Communist. She is an excelent communicator and everyone likes to talk with her.
  8. Who are the people in the condo and how did they get there?
  9. A couple of yeas ago there were stories in the Chinese paper which was picked up over here. Adoption had turned into a gang activity with babies being snatched off the street from there Mom's arms. They are then sold to a orphanage and eventually to a westerner. We had a local news man who adopted two Chinese girls and was alway braying about the fact. I sent him some of this info and asked him to show the dark side. He stopped writing for this paper.
  10. Everyone should do as Lee recommends. Over the long run it might help the problem get better. Most tellers just do the exchange for ones you don't like.
  11. Well, 7 cents is cheap to an American but you have to look at it through Chinese eyes. My father in law volunteered to do the wash by hand rather than buy a washer. He does not allow the heat or a/c to run. But I think he is just very tight. I have slept on damp sheets in a hotel that evidently did not have a dryer. Roger, you will have expenses with a washer dryer.. Why not let some one else do the wash. I used to take some stuff to a laundry in NJ and it seemed reasonable.
  12. Because the cost of electricty is so high in China, not many people use clothes dryers. Anyway, wouldn't you miss the smell of coal dust. I would check on a Chinese laundry and see what they charge for doing a load of clothes.
  13. As the in-laws don't need money that is not the reason their lives improved. Rather it is the fact that my wife now has the life she wanted eventhough wages were she used to work have gone up alot. What really helped them it seems was getting her out of the house so they did not have people talking about how sad they were that their 30 yo could not get married. We have encouraged them more to travel and that seems to have been a big factor in their new found happiness.
  14. My wife says that the dual citizenship proposal failed. I believe that the US does not allow it either as when you take the oath of citizenship you have to give up allegance to any other govt. I don't think it is ever enforced but it could be cause for concern if they are looking a way to take away the citizenship and deport the naturalized citizen.
  15. Sweetie saw a web site that said it expected up to a 30% inflation rate this year depending on where you are. Make finanial decision for the long term in China
  16. Don't be too worried about having Chinese around as she can always make friends with Americans. My wife's introduction went very smoothly as she slipped into the community here. The first 6 months were spent traveling, riding the bikes and climbing mountains. I guess some SO's have had trouble but not mine.
  17. Tony, At the time of WW2, Shinto was the main religion in Japan. That and Budhism now survive side by side. About the only way to tell the difference in which temple is which is the color. Shinto was more a state religion with the Emperor at its head and thus had the most members at that time. It is still an important religion eventhought McArthur removed the Emperor from his religious duties as a condition of him remaining Emperor.
  18. Does anyone know where the use of Sino as a subsitute for China came from?
  19. Can anyone tell me why this is required since there are millions of illegals here that probably have TB, are serving food and tests are not required. Another case of scewing people who obey the laws?
  20. Mr. K. Sounds like a good idea and maybe everyone should do it. May save a lot of problems later. I was tempted to check on a girl in Thailand one time but the cost was more than I wanted to pay as we were not that serious at the time.
  21. Inportant all aliens that move must send a change of address form to DHS. The form is on their web site. Can you believe that they don't charge anything!
  22. I see her mistake now. The $ will cost fewer RMB not more. Why did I not see that and jump on her error. Well, it keeps our time together interesting. So many well informed membors on the board!
  23. I don't know if this has been mentioned before but CIS has the new rules posted at their website. Does anyone know why it is posted there instead of on a DOS website?
  24. Acctually I was just trying to show how our evenings are spent! I have never worried about the exchange rate when traveling to Asia. I think that after many years of strenghting the RMB, China will allow it to float.
