My wife and I are leaving for China (for visit) soon. Her green card expires 3/30. We will be back 3/25. We are leaving 2/29. So we'll be out of the country for 25 days. Should we mail in the i-751 right before we leave, say on 2/28. Or should we mail it in after we come back on 3/26? The only problem with mailing it in on 2/28 is that we might be scheduled to show up before we return from China. Any one familar with the timeline? Thanks, Jin P.S. Humm... I doubt the airline in China can give us any info. It sounds the safest thing to do is to travel before the 2-year green card expires or to wait for the new card to come before traveling. Will there be any problem is the green card is to expire on 3/30/2012 when we exit China, say, on 3/20/2012? Will they deny the exit because the card will expire in such a short time then? Also, I heard that the new card will normally come between 6 months to 1 year from the time of application. Is that right? Thanks, Jin

Hi, My wife's green card expires 3/30/2012. We plan to travel to China in April 2012. And plan to come back in 3 to 4 weeks. Let's say we file the i-751 on 01/01/2012 (90 days prior to the expiration), will we be safe to go to China in April 2012? It will be best if we can get the new card before traveling, but is it likely or even possible? Let's say my wife gets a NOA that extends the green card by one more year, will the China Cusotms, Airline agents, or US Customs understand that the "expired" green card is actually not expired? Will be receive some kind of appointment notice while we are in China? I would like to know if anyone has been in similar situations and how did the experience go? The other plan to go travel to China in February 2012 and file the i-751 in March (We don't really want to go during that time because the whether is too cold, April is the ideal time) Any advise is appreciated! I remember it being very expensive, unnecessarily expensive considering what the average wage is in China. I think we did two copies of single cert, one copy of policy report, and three copies of birth cert. But I think we only needed one single cert, one policy report, and two birth cert. We then make copies. Whenever possible, submit a copy instead of the original.

Sorry to heard all the hardships. We were more fortunate since we live SF. However, we did have to pay $80 (or was $100? I actually forgot...) But I kept saying to myself why I had to pay someone that much money for just filling out the form and signing it. This should have been done in GUZ (by US gov) and shouldn't cost anything extra. We got the "Request for applicant to appear for initial interview". On there it asks for many items that have already been submitted. But it says (unless already submitted). So I shouldn't have to bring things like Form I-693 or I864 right? They were submitted when I sent in my wife's I-485 app. What is really needed? Thanks!

Just got an email notification that our case "has been received and routed to the National Benefits Center for processing". As of now, we are still in the 90-day range. We are safely in-status right?

I mailed in the i-485 package on 01/12. It got delivered to Chicago PO box 6 AM 01/14. When will I get a receipt response? Thanks!

K-1 is valid for 3 months, it's my understanding that we have to file i-485 within these 3 months. Is that right? Do we need to do anything after that? Is my wife safe to stay after the K-1 expiration? Thanks.

That's very convenient, isn't it? You don't have to wire anything, just deposit the money here in USA and they can get the money in China by themselves. Do they just need a PIN and that's all? Also, do you know if that exchange rate is the same as exchanging USD in Bank of China? Thanks.

I am using WAMU right now. They let me wire money to China for free. But this service will end soon according to a banker there. I have heard that BoA let's you wire money to China Construction Bank for free. Is that still true? Are there any other free services? Thanks.

Yep, I believe his cost is $25 or $35 Hum... I am not sure if we want to risk losing the original yellow book by mailing though. What do you think? Will he accept copy? Should I call? BTW, I am not receiving notifications from this thread even though I have set that up. Finally, the cheapest I found in SF is $85. I called so many offices already.

I live in San Francisco. I called two offices so far. Just for transferring the data from the yellow book to I-693. One can do it for $85, the other requires me to do the whole exam and charge $495. Has anyone got it done cheaper here? Thanks.

And if he does tell my wife to get more shots, does she have to take more shots? We are planning to have babies, so I really don't want her to take any more shots We don't have the report onhand. We gave the report to the immigration officer during POE. Is that OK?

The exam was done in China for the visa, and was in the Immigrations packet, it is not needed for AOS. Only part 1, and part 2 section 5 need to be done for AOS from a K-Visa if medical for the K-Visa is less than 1 year prior to applying for AOS. http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-693.pdf We don't have the Immigrations packet now, it's with the government right? They should know that examinations are not needed again right? Did the civil surgeon office just gave me erroneous info by saying that the government will only accept examinations done in US?

That's correct. The price seems a little steep (we paid only $10), but others have paid more. Weigh the cost against having to look around for a cheaper one. But does my wife, back then fiancee, needs to do the examination again in US? The office said that the US goverment will only accept examinations in the US. And I also called a friend, he said he asked an agency here for taking care of all the paperwork, he had to take 3 more shots. Is that correct? I am confused now. Regarding I-693, I just called a civil surgeon office at San Francisco, they said they would transfer the vaccination records to I-693, but they won't transfer the examination part. Does that make sense? Is that OK? They will charge $85 for transferring only the vaccination. Is that the normal rate?

My wife got her SSN, but it says it's valid only with DHS authorization. It's ok for now, but do we have to apply for a different SSN after AOS? Thanks.

The officer will again ask questions, both to the fiance(e) and the petitioner. The officer asked my fiancee the population of her city. Naturally, she said she didn't know. Haha. The officer also asked me questions. It was like going through another brief interview. But everything ended up ok

Just saw a thread on POE, thought I should share our experience on POE. My wife (back then fiancee) and I went through the visitor line together. We were directed by the guard. It was sooo slooowwww. It was like 15 minutes to half hour per person for process. On top of that, we got into the line with only one window open. (This is SFO). I am not sure if anyone had successfully enter via the citizen line. If so, the citizen line is definitely 10 times faster!!! Also, check to see how many windows are open before lining up. Go for the ones with two windows open. Good luck for all!

The i-693 asks for A-Number and SSN. The A-Number should be the same as the one on NOA2 right? My wife doesn't have the SSN yet (applied but haven't received). Should we wait for the SSN? Thanks.
