Thats a lot of scenery in just 15 miles...almost like a different world. It's cool that you can experience that without getting on a plane. Are you an anomally in the small towns you encounter or are they used to foreigners now?

Kind of interesting that they are using "I heart U" in English.
  9. Way before my time there but once, while I was in HK, I partied a little with a British Airways flight crew that was staying in my hotel and the pilot told me some horror stories about the old airport. Good times!!!

  14. ok, I see what you're saying now. The devil is in the details. They do have some "democratically elected" officials in HK BUT I'd bet a dollar that the selection of those candidates was done in a way that was something less than a democratic process. As you say, the party operates in a very subtle manner, especially when they want to. What I think will also be interesting to watch is whether or not the party will allow the selection and election of candidates through "universal suffrage" in HK which the National Peoples Congress has said could be done by 2017. The news is the occurrence of actual "democratic" elections in Hong Kong, which never occurred even under British rule - along with the involvement of the Communist Party. The Communist Party operates at a MUCH more subtle level than what we were taught in high school. So I found this an interesting tap dance around democracy, with lessons to be learned that might affect the future of "democracy" in China. After all, "It's the Communist Party that brings democracy to China" - in their own words.
  15. Seems like the same old same old, not really anything new unless I'm missing something.
  16. Congrats on the visa. I've had to do the Chinese visa at the Chinese consulate in Hong Kong thing myself, no complaints though, the process to get the visa is pretty smooth. I have to agree with your Hong Kong comment too. It's very easy to have a great time in Hong Kong.
  17. Have fun and congrats on the China wedding...it will be a great time...the Chinese families are always awesome at these weddings, always so accepting, generous and gracious, You'll have a great time. Hopefully she will be fine on the extension letter and maybe it won't even be an issue, worst case senario, submit a change of address to the post office and start palying house in China... jk, you'll be fine. Post pics for us if you have a chance, congrats once more and have the greatest time of you life so far.
  18. I don't kow what your schedule is but I've always found reasonable fares in November. A quick search of Orbitz and I found the fares below, granted they're not non-stop and it is Air China (not my favorite to put it mildly) but it does seem reasonable for a fight from Boston to Nanning. Check it out. Your current trip cost Flight Adult: 1 $954.00 Airfare taxes and fees $411.00 Service fee $6.99 Total due at booking $1,371.99 Price Assurance Additional baggage fees may apply. Trip Information Flight Multiple Airlines Leave Mon, Nov 5, 2012 Return Fri, Nov 30, 2012 Boston (BOS) > Nanning (NNG) Nanning (NNG) > Boston (BOS)More Flight Details
