AOS/EAD Timelines

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if we might start a list of AOS/EAD timelines, much like those posted in the Visa Delays Forum. Might include the following:

Date Entered the Country

Type of Visa

Marriage Date (if applicable)

Date Received SSN

Date Filed AOS/EAD/AP

Filed in person or by mail?

Where filed?

Receipt number received?

EAD Granted

First Appointment Scheduled

And anything else anyone might want to include.

I'll start it off:

Entered US March 28, 2003

K1 Visa

Married April 4

Filed for SSN May 16

Received SSN: Received card on July 11, 2003

Filed AOS June 2 (by mail)

Atlanta Regional Office

Received notification of receipt of application on 7/03/03

Receive AP on August 5, 2003

Received EAD August 26, 2003.

I think it would be useful for us to pin this and try to keep track of this info as many more folks are arriving and starting through the next phase of the immigration marathon. Whaddya think? :( :) :)

Thanks for posting the info. I find it interesting that both of you obtained "receipt numbers". Yet when I spoke to an immigration officer at the BCIS Info Line two days ago, he emphatically stated that the Atlanta Center would not be sending out a receipt number. I find this most disturbing.

The process this morning took approximately 30 minutes after we waited in line. We arrived at the BCIS office at 7:00 am, 19 people were ahead of us in line. The doors opened at 7:30. After the security check, we waited in a line to speak with an information person who briefly reviewed our documents and then gave us a number to wait to be called. We waited about 15 minutes in line and another 15 minutes before our number was called. We sat at a window while the BCIS person reviewed each document, supporting documentation, and the personal checks that we had prepared. She was quite pleasant, as was the man who initially reviewed our documents.

We used Eric and Yuhui's list which made the process quick (Thanks a bunch!).

Just some additional notes and comments.

The $50.00 fingerprint fee is not required. I questioned the clerk about this and she checked with a supervisor. It is not required. She gave our check back.

We are required to both have a completed G235A biographical sheet. (I kwow, we have completed sets for the original petition and for the US Consulate interview, but they required a new set) Maybe because her name had changed

Four passport style pictures were required for Yuqing.

They also wanted a passport style picture of me. We had not known this. She was quite nice and agreed to make a photo copy of my driver's license, so I suspect my picture was not too critical.

She told us to come back at 2 pm today to pick up the EAD card.

She also said that the AOS interview should take place in 4 to 8 months.

We will file for the SSN tomorrow after we pickup the EAD card this afternoon at 2 pm.

We decided to wait until after the marriage to apply for the SSN (with the name change) and to have the EAD in hand to avoid complicating the whole process.

All in all, not too difficult, if you have all the documents in place and organized before hand.

We did not hole punch anything. We had metal clips which she removed. She stapled a number of forms together. She had some small clear ziploc plastic bags in her desk which she put the pictures in and stapled them to the forms.

Off to SSA tomorrw!

You're welcome ! B)

About the fingerprint fee, it will depend on the office. Kanas cashed it with NOOOO second though.. I saw someone in CA whose app was returned because fee was missing.... So morale of the story.

If applying by mail, send the darn fee on a SEPARATE check... Normal case scenario, they will return it to you... Worst case... they sent the whole thing back ! It happened.. duh ! :o

You are right Eric. It seems there is no consistent approach between the various offices. The Atlanta Center sent ours back, saying there was no need for fingerprints for K1. :)

As with the initial process we all endured, there is absolutely no consistency between offices. For example, San Francisco BCIS cashed all our checks, including the two fingerprint checks we had mailed for Mia and her 12 year-old son, but our appointment letter for her fingerprinting only mentioned her.

Still, at least it only took two months between mailing and Mia's EAD.
