San Gabriel, CA Meeting

We are in for the 25th as well. 

 

Couple of thoughts....

 

The Arboretum is huge and meeting there is a great idea but to get out for lunch time in San Gabriel would be difficult.  .....

Louis, I originally suggested the Arboretum since we would have room for our group no matter how many people show up!

 

I thought we could make a day at the arboretum and then have a nice Chinese dinner....

Meeting at 10:00 and trying to get a restaurant elsewhere for a 12:00 would make even entering the arboretum questionable.

We can play it by ear. I like the idea of going for a nature walk myself. Lunch does not necessarly have to be a noon. I was actually thinking of a late lunch actually for the reasons you state ( around 3:00 pm ). I guess that may mean bringing a snack to the arboretum.

I for one agree with both of you. Earlier I understood an earlier post to mean something different. I thought you wanted to meet at the arboretum, see it and then go for lunch around noon. I was just pointing out that it would be difficult.

 

Maybe the arboretum has a picnic area?

Yes, the arboretum has a picnic area, but it is outside the grounds off the front parking lot. I will call them today and see about in / out privileges and such.

 

Maybe we could organize pickup of 'to go' food by several volunteers?

 

Or the Peacock cafe (inside) has reasonable sandwiches and such but nothing really Chinese.

Hi,

 

Yes that is a great idea! We can do either. There are many Chinese to go places around the arboretum. I just spoke to them:

 

If we have 25 or more people we can get the group rate of $5.00 per person.

 

We can go in and out all day but everybody MUST keep their receipt for this. That means we can meet and go in for while, then volunteers could secure food for a picnic lunch just outside.

 

The trams ($3.00) may or may be working!!!! (not anymore organized than the USCIS!)

 

The Peacock cafe may or may not be open (see prior comment).

 

There are many Chinese restaurants very close by that will pack to go. I think we should focus on dinner for 'authentic'.

New Capital is away from the mall (Santa Anita Fashion Park). If our membership was at all Japanese we would probably not want to consider this mall at all since it was the site of the Japanese Internment Camp at Santa Anita during WWII. But, I don't think this is an issue with CFL.

 

I really like ToDai. The Cuisine is Pan-Asian but it is a buffet. It would be a good choice if we all wanted to sit down together somewhere inside for lunch. We should do that early since buffets are best if everything is fresh.

 

We could meet at 10:00, then go see the greenhouses since they are straight back from the entrance, break for lunch then back to the arboretum until everybody was ready for dinner.

Ok, if we can consider this tentative, then we now need to work on a head count and a consensus among the attendees. As has been noted in other posts ALL CFL members that are in range are welcome of course! This venue and plan can pretty accomodate any size group we can get together.

Nope,

 

The Arboretum just said 'no' to barbecues either gas or charcoal out front.

 

Too bad, lots of goat meat for sale in East L.A. (Birria).

 

No goat hot pot places south of Fremont either, at least that I can find.

In SoCal at least, we never trust air that we can't see! What's it up to, hiding like that?

 

Anybody that has been to any industrial city in China recently will NOT be impressed by the smog here anyways.

 

The inversion layer has been in place over the LA basin for a LONG time. The chumash name for this area translates as 'the valley of the little smokes'.

 

Anyways I live below the 'Orange Curtain', not as intense over here.
