I'm the USC, I'm a woman. A couple years ago, right aftery husband and I were married, I changed my last name to his while I was visiting home. I thought it would be another good step to proving our marriage was the real deal. This has led to nothing but trouble. Since then I have had to renew my passport, which shows my new last name. I renewed my passport in the Shanghai US embassy, and also got a notarized letter from the embassy stating my old passport and new passport are the same person. My Chinese marriage certificate has my maiden name. Today upon trying to get the notarized copy (white book) of my marriage certificate, the officer wouldn't accept this notarized letter from the US embassy, even though I've used it to renew my visa multiple times. We were told to contact the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. They told me I need to return to America and go to the Chinese embassy there to get a paper that can be notarized by the Chinese government. My husband's marriage certificate can be notarized without a problem. Do I absolutely need my marriage certificate to be notarized as well?

Got a question that has me stumped. Every single document from first petition through citizenship, plus every other document and ID is in the original Chinese name. Now the Chinese spouse wants to change the name to an American name on every ID, document, liscense, title, account, insurance, etc. I have read all the instructions on how to do and what is needed,and while time consuming and costing some money, it appears fairly straight forward with 1 exception. The instructions explicitly say "upon receiving the judges decree granting the name change and after filing the document with the county recorder of deeds, you MUST also change your birth certificate." So my question is,is this possible to change the notorial Chinese birth certificate (white glued together book) from the Chinese name to the new American name? And then of course get more copies made if the Notory would do this. The person already has USA citizenship and USA passport. I also don't know if changing the name in the USA passport would require the new Chinese birth certificate, or just the judges order, or both. Would the USA naturalization certificate also need to be changed? (Just thought of this question now). The state of residence is Illinois in case it makes a difference in the law/rules/instructions. Dear Candle Friends- My husband and I have been happily enjoying time with friends in the US for 2 months now. We are so grateful for all of your help! Here's our question: how can I get my name changed from my maiden name to my husband's surname? We were married in China, so of course the certificate shows no name change. I've been exploring some options online and it seems like we can either get married again here for $20 or file a legal name change for $450. Obviously getting married again is cheaper, but won't that screw up all of our records, including my husband's green card papers since our original marriage date was 4 years ago? Thoughts? Has anyone gone through this?

Not sure if this is the right place to start, but here I am anyways. As a background, I'm a US citizen, and my fiancee is a Chinese citizen. She's living here in the states on an H-1B visa. When we've talked about whether to change her last name after marriage (I understand that this is not normal for Chinese women), but my fiancee is very concerned about the hassle of trying to change her name while simultaneously applying for her green card. If we decide to change her last name to mine (its still not something we've fully decided on), we don't know anything about what this would entail. Would we need to get her name fully changed first (along with getting a new passport, etc), and then apply for the green card, do it the other way around, or do both at the same time? If it makes a difference, she isn't planning on becoming a US citizen in the near future. Thanks for the help!

I saw in a post that for some their wife took their husbands last name and used her family name as her middle name. My wife future wife wants to do the same. We are marrying next month and want to know is there any thing I should do for name change, to make that process go smoothly? Like before submitting the I-130 . I was wondering if there was something we should do in China for the name change on marriage certificate? Then what about when filling out I-130? Passport change or not.ect. Any advise would be appreciated. Maybe some one could share step by step how and when they did it...Thank you

Hi, I am stumped about the name change. Fiance arrived 10 days ago and we went to the courthouse the next day and got married. In Colorado, you merely sign your names on the license and you are instantly married. The clerk said she could not change her name then, but could go over to the SS office and change it there. We went to the SS office yesterday and the clerk there let her change her last name (to mine) but not her first (I expected that). But, I am skeptical that this changed her name in any way. We still need to do the G-325a (bio info), i-131 (travel), i-485 (adjust status), and i-765 (work auth). That is, the AOS procedure for the alien who entered on a K1. My question is: is her name changed in anyway? Or, is is still the English translation on her passport? We need to haul ass on her AOS as she was given a very short window of validity for her K1. So, how are names legally changed? Through marriage/divorce? Or, in state or county (not federal) venues? I would appreciate any light shed on this situation. Thanks, Greg

After my wife has her visa and gets over to the States, she'd like to change her name to take my own last name. I've looked at some old threads on here, but have mostly come up with threads about folks coming over on fiancee visas. So, what's the skinny on name change after entering on an IR1? Will we need to have her passport sent to a Chinese consulate to have an "Also known as…" sticker added?

Has anyone gone to the Chinese consulate in Chicago to submit for a name change (or more apt, to get the "also known as" page)? We had tried to contact them by phone, but we've never gotten through. We sent a bunch of questions to them via email, but they only answered a small portion of them. We're going to visit my family in that area anyway, so I thought we'd pop in and try to update my wife's passport. 1) They've told us to bring marriage certificate, passport, and green card. Has anyone needed anything else? Cash, check, passport photos? Is there an application we should fill out in advance? 2) Can we just walk in during the morning and hope we get what we need? 3) Do they process the passport that same day? 4) Anything we cannot bring in? Cell phones? 3 month old baby? 5) It is the 1 East Erie St. address, not the 100 West Erie St. address, correct? I realize they're only a few blocks away, but I'd rather go to the right one. Thanks for any information. We just want this page added in her passport so she could get plane tickets in her married name and not worry about carrying around the marriage certificate anymore.

Hello everyone, I know it has been quite a while since I have been online. Just finished my school and we are expecting a baby girl this holiday 😝. We are so excited and blessed. I do have a few questions about my status and needs all your help. I have a 2-year green card, I arrived here in the US last year of April 2nd. I know that I need to process for my 10-year green card 90 days before my 2nd anniversary. So my questions are as follows: 1. What type of visa should I file? 2. What are the documents needed? 3. Should we include our baby in the papers and how? 4. And lastly, how do I change my last name to my married name? It is included in the form or do I need to file separate? I am hesitated to change my name after marriage. The reason is that: My AOS application is on the process for 3 months, including I-485, I-765 (EAD) and I-131 (AP). If I change right now, I have to notify USCIS to name change and that will cost me another $450 for filing fee and biometric if my research is right. And I have to change my SSN card name although it is free. And I am going back to China this October with AP. Does it effect my trip? Also, I wonder if I change my name, does it effect my Chinese ID card, banking account, insurance etc in China? Fortunatelly I have not opened account or get employed by any company at the moment. So it is seemed for me only need to change the name on SSN card, green card, EAD and AP. If I decided to change my name, shall I take my husband's name as my last name and keep my last name as middle name? Or just take his last name as my last name without middle name? Which one is more common practise? Could you guys share me your experience? Thanks again!

Hi all. When we requested my wife's social security number, we had them add my last name as she wanted to take my name. When moved her maiden name to now be used as her middle name Should she be signing all the forms as her NEW name (which includes my last name) or the name from her passport? I ask this because she has signed all the forms with her new name except for I-693. The Dr had her sign I-693 with the name that matched her passport. will this cause us a problem? thanks all

While in China next month Hui wants to change her name on her passport. She will be traveling to China on a ticket with her madin name on it. Will it be a problem returning with a passport that will then have her married name?

Hi All, Its been a crazy and hectic last 2 weeks. But all worth it!!! I flew to HKG to get my love, spent a week in the Rockies (UT) and got married :)Now the next steps and I have a few questions..... 1)Is there a link on here on what exactly is needed for AOS? Do we need the actual marriage license for this? I only have the marriage certificate thus far. Maybe another 2 weeks before we get the marriage license in the mail. 2)When can I get her a SS Card/SS number? What is needed? 3)I assume we cant do her name change yet. We need the marriage license first, correct? 4)We are planning to go back to China the end of March for a Chinese wedding.I dont think we will have her green card by this time. What is needed for Lili to leave the States for the China wedding and get back into the states after? 5)Finally, we currently live in Texas. However, we are moving to Utah in March. Hi My wife is thinking about change her name during the citizenship application and I am wondering if this will become a big headache? What other government departments need to be notified besides DMV, Social Security after the name change? Many thanks.

My wife is worried that she needs to get a name change addendum added to her passport since she became aware of such a process through the consulate. She is worried that on exit from Chinese immigration that since her green card is in her married name and does not match her passport (first name and last name changed) it will cause trouble. (They will check her green card to ensure she has entry clearance to U.S.). She has a legal name change court order and marriage certificate but she is worried that if she does not go through the name change process through the Chinese consulate she may have trouble. What have others done? Was this needed? We had been thinking to not bother until her passport comes up for renewal in 2017. Lee -
My stepson, James, just turned 18, and will be off to college in a couple of weeks. He wanted to legally change his name before he leaves, so yesterday we appeared in Chancery Court and received a Court order (Court approved) name change. (Very smooth and easy process) BUT...When he went to Social Security and then TN driver's license office, he was turned down for name changes. He was told at both offices that he must have his name changed on his Green Card before they will change name on SS card and Driver's License. (We will apply for new Greencard, but hoping to get SS card and License before he starts college) From what I read last night on The SS and TN driver's license websites, I think they are wrong. My question for our members is: Has anyone gone through this scenario or anything similar? Thanks, Hank

My Chinese fiance and I are talking about if she would change her name when she comes to America and if so, to what? I was curious what others have done or think about it? The possibilities so far: 1. Keep her name as it is without my last name. 2. Add my last name to her Chinese name 3. Register her already used English name with my last name. 4. Register her english name with my last name and use her Chinese name as her middle name so that both her English and Chinese were on her documentation. Any thoughts? How has everyone else handled the "name" issue?

Now studying up on all the AOS phase processes. Everything in the FAQ is very clear on the last name change and is easy to accommodate, however at the same time we want to legally change her FIRST name to her chosen english name. From what I have been able to determine, this must be done at your local courthouse with a petition for name change. I got the info, no problem. I presume we do this after we get married so we can demonstrate the last name change as well. Seems ok to do this even with no green card yet. In the state we are marrying (Florida) they don't appear to ask what your married name will be but I presume you can't change a first name at that time anyway? She already has a Michigan state ID and SS card with her Chinese name from the time she studied in the U.S.. Very helpful... so no rush on the ID and SS card. She won't need to work or drive. I imagine after we get the name change approved, then go get a new Washington State ID and then file for AOS referencing the new first/last name as the married name (and include a certified copy of the name change I imagine). That should get everything processed through them with the new name. At this time can start using the new name on everything else... bank account, credit cards, etc... But do NOT file for the name change with SS until we get the Green Card from what I read? It will go smoother if they get data from USCIS on this first?

How long before the expiration date of current chinese passport does it need to be renewed. Also,her name has changed,so are there going to be any issues?

When you married your wife, did she take your last name? If so, how did that work with her passport, immigration papers, etc? Seems like it could be a complicating factor. -
My wife took my last name when we married. We now have the green in her new name of course, but her passport is in her previous name. She took my last name and made her previous last name her middle name. Will re-entry to the US be a problem if we travel on her old name (passport and plane tickets), and her new name on the green card? It would be easy to bring the marriage certificate to prove this. We are considering visiting China and are trying to work out all the details. I've read a bit about the name change process for the chinese passport. It looks like the only option is to bring the chinese passport to a China consulate (chicago) in PERSON and they can ammend it. That's fine, but Chicago is an 8-10hr drive and we are not free during week days when they are open. So will we be fine re-entering the US with the new name on the green card and the old name on the chinese passport? If not, are there any other options for ammending the passport?

Here are a few pointers for those of you who's Chinese spouse's passports are expiring. New Chinese laws that went into effect in January have eliminated simply extending the passport. You must go to the consulate in person to renew your passport unless you are over 65, a minor or have a disability that prohibits you from making the trip. The fee is 60 dollars unless you need the name changed to a married name then it is 70 dollars. Your spouse will need the following A photo copy of the front and back of the green card. a photo copy of the information page showing the visa he or she came in on. A photo copy of the USC spouse's passport. A filled out form from the consulate webpage an H-2 or H-1. I'm not exactly sure. Get to the consulate a little before 9 AM to avoid long lines. It is best if you both go because she will need to go through one line to get her passport photo taken while you wait in the other line to submit the forms. That way she won't have to go to the back of the line. They can sell you a prepaid priority mail envelope or you can take your own to have the passport sent to your home in.

Hi, when we applied for the marriage license, I (Chinese) used my maiden name on the form (at that time, we didn't know that this would be my married name on the marriage certificate). Now we want to change my last name to my hubby's. Does any one have a clue how to do this? (My AOS is still under process.) Thanks a lot.
