  1. Great articles!!! Thanks for digging them out! When I'm reading this job about Au Pair, my heart thumps. Everyone, please keep finding more job opportunities for Chinese women in the US!!
  2. Hi Ihp, I am so glad that you asked, cause I too, worked in a Fortune 500 for 10 years, couldn't find a job in the US. 6 months in the US, I tried searching jobs online, turned out, I can't even do Homedepot store survey; I tired talking to connections in my previous company, but I didn't have the confidence to compete with Americans for the same position I went through a very low point. Had to learn to adjust my EXPECTATIONS! It's not easy. And it will take time. Encouraging her to do some volunteer work, something she's passionate about This will help her gain local experience. Then with her past experience and knowledge, she will have a better understand of her self value in this new country.
  3. Very nice pictures Catherine! Your long hair looks great in that cute hat! Did you actually trying to ride a bike on the frozen lake!?? I was in Harbin once in the winter, so cold I wanted to cry! Never thought I would live in Michigan where snow would not melt in March!
  4. We have a electric stove, not my favorite, but when my husband brought me new none stick wok(flat bottom) from Target, I was happy--- oh the new wok didn't let out much smoke! Then, my mom came visit and cooked for us for 2 months, we were all in heaven! The yammy chicken legs with dark sauce, so tender and delicious! That was authentic Chinese good! But By the time my mom was leaving, the wok didn't look good any more. The way she cooked quickly burn off all the coating on the none stick wok! The coating then became flaky, when cooking, the flaky coat all mixed in food.....Had to throw away the pretty wok. I was so inspired by my mom's cooking, I typed in Chinese, searched for dark sweet sauce dish, and started cooking, with the only pan left in the house , it's a 150 none stick. These dished usually involves cooking meat on big fire for 2-3 mins , and without paying close attention, the coating was Burt, again! 2 pretty none stick wok down in 2 months..... I wondered. ---- Are we Chinese ladies all wok killers?!? Happy Thanksgiving , CFL! Big time cooking!
  5. Don't understand why this post was buried here, and yes, I am frustrated with the wok! Very helpful discussion!
  6. Sticky rice as stuffing! This really sounds Chinese! Anyone tried this yet? Thomas, where did you find this recipe?!
  7. Catherine, you are so passionate about English, you are very lucky to know what you like, and do it as a profession. I enjoyed the difference of the two language too! Very fun to compare. I enjoy noticing the difference! This is also something I like about US. Such a melting pot ---- different ethnic, color of skin, culture, language... people respect difference and learn from each other. Maybe this is why the America is leading in innovation? Being different is not a good thing in China. If you have tattoo and piercing, you must be with the gangsters, or will end up there. If you have too many question, the teacher will think you're not respecting(authority), you are a trouble kid.
  8. There's a Chinese saying about wife older than husband : Wife 3 years older, husband gets to hold golden bricks Wife 4 years older, husband gets happy things Wife 5 years older, husband gets to be rich Rawknee, If this were true, the ex-mother-in-law didn't ruined her son's prosperity.
  9. Such an old but fun habit! I enjoyed the super long Sunday morning today! China had this maybe 20 years ago? I had vague memory...
  10. Congrats! He is one lucky boy!
  11. Exactly the man's attitude matters! OK, let's ask our gentleman here, if there's disagreement between your wife and your mother, which side will you choose?
  12. Catherine, you are so sweet! Nice work adding everyone's picture!! Wow, 15 year! rock on Larry and Liren!
  13. argh.... we are so alike! We Chinese women just can't stop working, anywhere! I think you are on the right path -- you started to prepare, asking questions, visit CFL. I'm very proud of you!! Small town can be lonely! Apart from all the common ways we discuss on the forum, you have a big family here! When I was depressed last winter, in this small town covered with snow, didn't see any living thing! I came to cry on CFL, I was flooded with warmth and care. We will watch you
  14. One things did strike me as the difference between Chinese and American: She didn't like to be associate with "old people". I slipped my tongue saying something like "as old people, you need to be more careful..." She would replied in a ironic tone, " Am I that old already? "
  15. Hi Xiaoyan, great question! Everyone is different, I can only speak for my experience. My mother in law is 72, JUST about to retire, for that I have utmost admire for her. She was a stay-at-home mom until my husband was 10. Then she went back to college to pursue her graduate degree, after that, doctor degree. She said she just enjoyed studying. She started to learn guitar at age 40, now she performs at a local bar with other musician, they love Celtic music(Irish) . Living by the sea, she loves turtle. She would get up earlier during the hatching season, searching for turtle nests to protect the eggs from predators. She loves baking, spoiled us with tons and tons of chocolate chip cookies whenever we meet. She loves to read to my daughter, if I didn't say anything, she would probably keep reading for a whole night! We talk on phone regularly. She gave me lots of support when I just arriving the US -- trying to adjust but had many problems. We carried on that phone call habit since then. I enjoy talking to her. To me, she is a fascinating woman, I want to learn from her. Xiaoyan, you will be amazed how beautiful this relationship will be - just open your heart and your eyes
  16. I can't believe you told them the truth, and they still let you in? Isn't this consider a intention of immigrant and usually the POE will reject entry?
  17. Hi Snowzhong, Your sharing is wonderful!! I'm truly happy for you and your husband, you came from a long way! The books you listed are such great resource for long-distance couples! My husband and I went through the same, in fact, reading these books kept us sane: 1. When we were understanding each other and relook at love: <<The Rules of Love>> <<How to save your married before it starts>> 2. When we were in the infinite waiting: <<The Power of Now>> 3. When I thought I couldn't make it: Nelson Mandela's <<The long walk to freedom>> 4. When meeting stepdaughters: <<Helping your kids cope with Divorce>> ... books later on being a step mother It's Oct.27, the day of your interview, hope you could come back to share the result with us. Good or bad, we are here for you! ps. Your English is perfect! Where did you learn your English?
  18. Nice pictures set! Reminded me of the old Tongtang in Shanghai. Surprised to see this one though, I thought these bucket toilets are already gone. Women chat as they carry bucket toilets to empty in public toilets, Sept 1, 2010.[Photo/qq.com] Yes Thomas, you are quite an intruder in these allies. But isn't that stare made us feel unique? I could walk 100 time up and down a street in Philadelphia, and no one pay a single attention to me.
  19. Don't let my husband see this car! When we lived in Philadelphia, we went to Wegmans sometimes, yeah, I have to admit they have very very good selections. I kept one of their free cooking brochure. My first Meatloaf, Enchilada were all from this recipe book. Question: What if the Wegman didn't give back to the community, what will say if you see their Ferrari?
  20. Sounds crazy to me, but definitely fun project!
