The Google toilet paper was a laugher too. Somethings should always be kept private. Lol -

Taxis are plentiful in Zhuhai, day or night. Zhuhai being a tourist destination, bordering Macau might be a factor here. I think I remember they started at only 2 or 3 RMB. From my hotel to Gongbei Port, a 5 minute ride on a good and fast day was 14 RMB. For a 45 minute ride to Doumen and the factory I was working at, was flat 120 RMB fee. All in all very reasonable, and the taxi drivers were all very honest to this foreigner. Shenzhen is a bit more difficult to hail a taxi. No matter, as the MTR is the best way to get around in that city.

Thank you MCL for posting your thoughts from your own perspective. It was uplifting and reassuring to read, as at first I identified a bit too close to the subject in the "Documentary". But I do contribute that more to the filmmaker's preconceived bias about that other Steve and not on the couple's dynamics together. -
Changsha is a great city that would be the second largest in the USA. There will be tenants.Wasn't commenting about this as if it is being built in a Ghost City. Only in reference to the fact that there is a glut of unoccupied skyscrapers already in existing cities in China. And the long term economics (or lack there of) of building yet another REALLY big one.
-
Wonder if it will have any tenants.

Since I am back at home in Vancouver, WA, my gf in Ningbo has emailed her worry for me too.

Its winter here in China and dog is in season. Supposedly, it helps keep you warm. Saw a plastic tote filled with three skinned dog carcasses outside a resturant in Shenzhen last week. Never tried it.

Hope this isn't too far OT. My pet peeve: why do the Chinese exiting escalators or walking sidewalks always take one step off, stop and look around in a blind stare? Oblivious to the fact that the people behind them are being fed right into them. Recently at HKIA I actually saw a pile up of 8 people tripped up and on the ground because of this. Here on the mainland, they also seem to clump together motionless and looking around, plugging up the entrance to these people movers, too. Drives me nuts! That, and smoking cigars in packed elevators while yelling into a cell phone, not more than 1 foot away from me.

Actually I do love the bluntness in the way that most Chinese express themselves. A quick one comes to mind, I was with an ex-GF at Fantawild Adventures outside Shenyang last year. Its kind of a Chinese ripoff of Disneyland. We just got off of a water ride and was drying out from a lot of water slashing over our heads. Her son points at me and says matter of factly "You have hair like old woman." His mother straight faced agreed. I laughed my ass off. They were right.

Hmmmm..... the girls in The Rain Bar in Shenzhen last night kept saying I was so handsome, says a 55 year old 112kg laowei. :-)

IPad3 from USA to China
Steve in USA replied to pbatt's topic in Communications, Planes, Shipping & Money
I used to get a China Unicom micro SIM for my iPad2 and iPad3 and another for my cell phone for use on my visits. My advice, buy something like this or a knock off for cheap in China: http://www.dhgate.com/at-amp-t-novatel-mifi-2372-wireless-mobile/p-ff80808137e9e970013804268e74416e.html Its about half the size of a cell phone and easily fits in your pocket. Use it as a mobile WiFi Hotspot for both your iPad and cell phone. No need to buy two or more micro SIMs and data plans. I use one with my iPad3, cell phone, and iPod Touch 5G. Works slick, even in rural areas. Note: 3G is the fastest service you will get in China, so do not pay more for a 4G or LTE device. -

Expired green card, can SO get a state ID?
Steve in USA replied to Dewayne's topic in AOS & Immigration Challenges
In Washington State you can get either a state ID or driver's license without proof of US citizenship. Only requires proof of Washington State residence. http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/idproof.html -
Sorry, I still have no answer on your original question about the QQ video glitch. Maybe now that we know your platforms someone else may have a clue. When I chat text with non English speaking Chinese on mobile QQ (which does not have a translator), I too manually use Google translator for the initial English to Chinese translation, but I cross check on fanyi.baydu.com. Then I copy and paste them in the message window to send. For me the grammar differences between English and Chinese is the major rethink to get the meaning across using a computer translator. This video is a good help with the differences in grammar: The whole group of Yoyo Chinese lessons by Yang Yang Cheng are very good. Search them out on Youtube.

No answers just wonder what platforms each of you use. PC or Mac. Mobile app? I have lots of problems using mobile QQ on my iPad.

A life in the day of a Foxconn employee
Steve in USA replied to dnoblett's topic in The Middle Kingdom - 中国
I have been to the Foxconn factory at Longhua subdistrict of Shenzhen (not Dongguan), Guangdong Province. The report is pretty accurate in highlighting the bleakness of existness there. There is a palpable sense of despair in the air simply walking into the place, although the stories of the "suicide nets" the western media tries to portray is highly biased. Reminds me too, of old black and white news reels from 1920s New York city. Massive seemingly uncoordinated activity. Could also be said of the too few places I have seen in China. Busy, busy, busy everywhere...... On my business travels I usually work at the Flextronics factory in Doumen near Zhuhai. That factory is much more civilized than Foxconn, but still quite unbearable by western standards. I chat regularily on QQ with friends who still work there and others who have since left and moved on. They are some of the nicest, most gracious people I have ever met. The factories in China are a nice place to visit, but I sure wouldn't want to live there. -

No experience with finding this in China, but goats milk is a great alternative to cows milk for a baby.
