We have Shelter Insurance and it did not go up at all when I added my wife. It went up about 10% (lost the safe driver discount) after she rolled our car last summer. We pay just over $600 a year on a 2003 Impala. Bob

I just helped a friend complete his visa paperwork. His wife (chinese) had been divorced twice and had no trouble getting both certificates. Please keep in mind goverment offices in China in different areas have different rules. His wife's brother is also a lawyer and he accuired all the papers for her. You might check into a lawyer in china to help. Hope all goes well, Bob

Anyone in Iowa...or am I the only one?
Bob & Guiping replied to ndjarrett's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Neil, Sorry for the delay. Guiping is from Wuhan which is much warmer than here. Guiping loves the snow however the cold is not her favorite. This will be the first year driving in the snow so that may change. I have tried to get her out of the house during the winter as much as possible and I think that has helped her adapt. This year she will be deer hunting with me so she will get plenty of exposure and I believe she will become just like the rest of us. Bob -
Anyone in Iowa...or am I the only one?
Bob & Guiping replied to ndjarrett's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
I am still lurking around. Guiping works second shift so I do have time to check in every now and again. Otherwise everything is great. Still in the AOS process. I can't wait until I am done with the USCIS. Bob -

Neal, Guiping and I are in Mt. Pleasant. SE corner of the state. You are not the only one here. Bob -
Another option is to take the paperwork to the US embassy or consulate American Citizen Services office and a request proof of marrigability document. You will need copies of previous divorces, birth certificate and your passport and $55. You will have to swear you are legal to be married and they will give you the document translated and everything. This worked for me in Wuhan. Hope this helps. Bob

What's Allowed/Not Allowed in China?
Bob & Guiping replied to MarkLuvsShuPing's topic in Culture & Language Discussion
On the laptop issue. If you run windows 2000 or XP the regional language settings allow you to enter in pinyin. You just type the word select the correct Chinese character and hit the space bar. I have it working on both of my systems. Also most laptops have a universal voltage charger/adaptor, just check to make sure. Bob -

Try a different office. We just walked in and showed the form, passport with the visa, I-94 and the lady looked up the needed information and said we would have the card in 2 weeks. We got them both in about 1 week. The lady told me K3/K4 were differnt and were allowed to have a SSN issued. I found one office that said my family could not have a SSN until they had a green card. I just tried a office in a city with many immigrants and had no problem. Hope this helps, Bob

I was in the same situation with my step-daughter. She is K4 has not had a I130 filed as of yet and she has received the EAD. Just a note though, if the only purpose is to receive a SSN, the EAD is not reqiued. We had the SSN for both my wife and her daughter long before the EAD was applied for. Good luck.

My Trip to Shanghai
Bob & Guiping replied to ChinaRose's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Hi Rose, You are very smart getting the shots before you leave China. You will not need them to enter the US but you will need them for the AOS. Guiping has no record of the shots she had so we have to do them over again. I took her and her daughter earlier this week and found they were free for her daughter but will be about $400 for Guiping. If you are able to file your AOS within a year of receiving your exam in China you will not need to have another. You will need to have you vaccination record verified and the I693 suppliment completed by and approved doctor in the US. Best wishes to you. ---Bob -
Hi, Sorry I have not replied sooner. I barely can get any online time now that my step-daughter is up and running on her machine. The questions in the interview are very simple. How did you meet? How much time have you spent together? How many times has husband been to China? Do you speak English? Doe your husband speak Chinese? How do you talk? Do you love your husband? Why do you want to go to the USA? They asked Guiping to pronounce my full name and the city where we would live. GZ lists all the paperwork needed on the website and make sure you have it all. The more photographs together the better. Phone records are good but not required. The I-134 and all supporting popers is a must. The POE in Chicago was nice and simple. Just hand them the brown envelope and they take it from there. No good English skills required. I hope this answers you questions. Best of luck and best wishes, Bob

OT---Chinese Characters on ICQ
Bob & Guiping posted a topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
I am hoping someone can help me figure out how to get this working. My step daughter is trying to use her Chinese ICQ program and we can not figure out how to get it to display the Chinese Characters. We are running Windows 2000 and have it working to input the Chinese just fine but we can not get it to read it. I have all the web fonts working to read all the web sites but on this ICQ I can not figure it out. I know this is really off topic for this board but I figure we will have the most experiance with Chinese characters. Thanks so much for any help. WangBei is feeling very cut off from her friends right now and I really want to make this work for her. ----Bob -
They Are Here
Bob & Guiping replied to Bob & Guiping's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
A great big thanks to all. I managed to get some computer time today. I have found it is very difficult to get to the computer since WangBei is test driving the laptop I bought her. We decided today they would just sleep and try to catch up before we hit the streets of Iowa for the introductions. Soon Guiping and I will sit down and I will try to have her post some. She is very scared about her English skills mostly in typing. If any would like to send her email in Chinese I am sure she would welcome it. Again thanks to all and I hope each and every one wil experiance the joy of being togther soon. Bob & Guiping -
Guiping and WangBei arrived with out any problems. We arrive home yesterday evening. They are both very tired and excited at the same time. I will post more at a later date. Thanks and best wishes to all. ---Bob & Guiping

My Happy Day is Almost Here!!
Bob & Guiping replied to Bob & Guiping's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Thanks every one. I do hope I do not get lost in Chicago, I am more worried about the driving than the airport. I am going to try to get some sleep, but it will be hard. Thanks for all the good wishes. ---Bob -
Just 4 days before our 1st anniversary Guiping will arrive in the USA. In a few hours my family will board the flight heading for Chicago. First thing in the morning I will drive to Chicago to meet them. This day has seemed so far away but it is finally here. I am so excited and happy my dream is finally coming true. I want to thank everyone for the help and support with each message and reply posted. I will continue to read and post when I can be helpful. I wish every one who is still waiting the best of luck. I wish happiness to everyone. Thanks----Bob and Guiping

Guiping Has Her Visa!!!
Bob & Guiping replied to Bob & Guiping's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Thanks to all. I am so happy and relieved, it is hard to put it into words. The biggest relief is not being in the "I have no idea" stage. It is truly wonderful to be able to mark on the calendar the day when my family will be joined together, once and for all. I hope this feeling will come to all those caught up in the process. I wish all the best of luck. ---Bob -
