  1. HUH?? You're joking, right? My wife and I figured we could easily live well on $500-600 per month in Nanning, China. It is tempting to go and set up shop there. Maybe, that's about double what he said though... either quote is too low in my opinion... but to each his own. To Griz, I liked your idea of cigars & hell raising, I'm sure you'll figure out something. B)
  2. Maybe there not selling the new ones in China? I know the one I just got for Zhen is wifi enabled because I set it up. When she's in the house & hits the Internet it uses our wifi connection rather than the 3G network & it'll find wifi hotspots when you're in places that have it & allow you to use them as well. To me it was the best gift I've ever given her. I love her very much, but the 10+ phone calls a day I used to get while working asking me to look for this or that on the Internet or email this person, have completely stopped & she can do it all herself now no matter where she is.
  3. Thats OK........its a long series. Pedro will retire after tonite Haha, it won't be that long, 5 games at the most! GO PHILLIES!!!! Yup you are right.......Yankess will win the next 4 and Phillies will be going home in 5 That's great that you're still keeping your sense of humor!! Seriously, good luck!

  5. You should check your local/state laws; I know you need a license to operate these in NY, NJ & PA, possibly quite a few other places as well.
  6. Hi Joanne, Zhen says Hello! We hope you and your family are doing well & had a great Holiday! We took Zhen's employees out for dinner last night at Joy Tsin Lau, where we ate with you before. The line was out the door & we didn't get out of there before 10, but it was worth it. When you're in the Philly area again, let us know, we'd love to get together! Take care! P.S. How did the Moon Cakes turn out?
  7. These 1st two links both resolve to the same site, maybe one is a re-direct? ...anyway, I always thought of these 2 sites below as the 'meat & potatoes' of 001, where the real action takes place, at least they're the ones my wife is always on. But the ones you posted are the 'parent site' of these anyway. http://usa.bbs.net/bbs/01/index.html - Mainly Marriage based Visa Help. or http://usa.bbs.net/bbs/02/index.html - More for personal discussions, seems a lot of post-visa, USA adjustment type stuff.
  8. Well, I have to throw this out there now, our family's little claim to fame... My great, great, great, great, great grandfather was the minister who married Abraham Lincoln's Mother & Father. Personally I vote for Washington on this question though, as someone else said, he was offered the crown of the US & turned it down, who else could or would do that?! And where would we be now if he hadn't...
  9. Yes, K-3 needs to meet the same Income requirements as a K-1.
  10. You are gold mine of information. I'm glad to hear Mexico does not require a visa for green card holders. You just saved me a day sitting in Mexican consulate. Thanks so much for the Delta link! That is a great resource. We took a cruise back in March to the Western Caribbean, Zhen just loved it & I'm sure your wife will too! Have a great time! Steve
  11. I thought so too, very cool of them to do that - I will be writing a nice letter about that for sure! OK, an I-20 is new to me, I will do some searching on what that is. That's also a great idea on contacting the original school since they should know something about it. Thanks, Randy! Sorry - I-20 A link in case it's not in the other thread http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html Not a problem, I saw you edit your post & I did the same. I read the other link from CFL you included & one of the things in there said Family Member (which she is not), but then I saw Guardian... all other considerations forgotten, would we be OK trying to do this as her Guardians? I'm gonna check the other link also which you supplied about searching for schools: http://www.tabs.org/about/us_visa.html Thanks again, Randy! I don't think there's a problem there at all - most Chinese people coming here on F-1 visas are college students who may or may not even know someone in the US Right, makes sense.

  14. I was driving home from work yesterday & Zhen calls me & asks me to come to her Salon. I get there & she's on the phone with a guy from the CBP (Customs & Border Control) in Newark and soon she asks me to talk to him. OK... So, in speaking with him I find out that the daughter of a good friend of ours in China had just arrived in Newark earlier in the day on her way to Mississippi, but they held her in Newark due to problems with her Visa and wanted to know if we could come get her. Apparently she was to attend her Senior year of High School in Mississippi in some sort of program (which I still haven't gotten all the details on), but that program was canceled last minute & her mother didn't find out until she was already on the plane. So she gets here & the CBP tells her that her Visa is no good now & she'd have to go back to China. Of course she was devastated & crying & calling her Mom to find out what happened. Well, to make a long story short (too late ) she got extremely lucky & a very nice man, Supervisor Shiu of the CBP, sat down with her & found out all that happened & rather than ship her back off to China, he actually changed her Visa from a Student Visa to a 3 month Visitor Visa! It took me an hour & a half to get to Newark and they were just wrapping up the Visa switching when I got there & he explained everything that needs to occur. They were a little leary letting her go home with just me (Zhen won't close her Office early for anything, haha), but after speaking with her Mom, she said it was fine & they copied my license & got our address, etc. then released her. So she has a 3 month Visitor Visa which will expire on October 30th, in that time we must try to find a school for her to attend & if we do then we must apply to change her Visitor Visa back to a Student Visa. So here are the questions: 1) For anyone out there who has brought their stepchildren over, how did you go about having them enrolled in school? What is the process? 1a) Since she does not have an Immigration Visa, I'm sure the process is a little different than most peoples experience here, but can anyone shine a light on how we would enroll her with only a Visitor Visa? Is it even possible? 2) If she is actually accepted at a school & we are able to enroll her, does anyone know how long it takes to apply for a Student Visa & could that be done in time before her Visitor Visa expires? They were explicit in telling me that even if she is enrolled, if the Student Visa is not applied for and Approved before October 30th, she would have to return home... Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks much in advance! Steve & Zhen
  15. LPR's may also file for their children (in case he was over 18 when you married), but the wait is in the 5 to 10 year range. I believe the Child Status Protection Act freezes his age at the time of filing, or at the time the visa number is available (if child of LPR) (NOA2) And thank you too, Randy! Although we are not going this way as it would take too long, it's definately good for others to know. I'll be filing immediately hoping to be done in time for him to start the next school year on time {fingers crossed}.
  16. Thanks, Dan! I figured that was the case, but just wanted to make sure. Nice to know I don't need to do the G-325A again.
  17. How do I go about filing for a Visa for my son-in-law? He was originally on the I-130 years ago, which has since been dropped/expired as the K-3 was much quicker for them. Anyway, in the end when it was time for the Interview, he didn't want to come here & decided not to interview. Now he wants to come, which is great, but I'm not sure how to go about it... I'm thinking I just file a new I-130, but this time it would be for a son, instead of a wife. I believe the US sees him as my son, correct? Anyone know how to do this? Is it possible or am I thinking wrong... Thanks! Steve & Zhen
  18. "Once the United States and China became allies in World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to bring that era to a close by signing a 1943 law repealing the exclusion acts. Historians say some obstacles to immigration lingered for another two decades." Huh, only 2 decades, I would've said it has been much longer, like 6 decades...
  19. CONGRATULATIONS, Richard and Amanda!!
  20. Me... We have joint accounts & everything is shared, but I'm the one paying for everything. Hell, she doesn't even go to the bank to drop off the money from her business. She comes home & asks me to deposit it for her.

    Isolation

Well, I don't know anyone who isolates their wife from anything, but that is just me I guess. Zhen has an account here & has read it a few times, but quickly lost interest & the same with 001. Frankly, if she were on here, 001 or any other site for hours a day making 1000s of posts, I would be a little worried for her & drag her outside to see the sun once in a while. I don't really see how making CFL contacts would make someone feel less isolated, possibly more as they are in the house all day on the computer... As far as being around their peers, Zhen also has lost a lot of interest in that. Her words, not mine; "Chinese people [in the US] are so 'One Way', they only care about themselves". She had what she thought was a good friend in her old boss; this was her 1st job in the US & Zhen worked in this woman's Salon. Zhen had always told her she would open her own business one day & the woman constantly tried to shoot her down, telling her it was very expensive, time consuming, hard, etc.. Zhen stopped working for her when she got pregnant, but they remained friends & met all the time still & constantly talked on the phone. Once we had the baby & things normalized, we starting looking in earnest for a Salon. Now that Zhen has opened her own business, she called her 'friend' to tell her... the second Zhen said she opened it, the woman said she was busy & hung up. They have never spoken again since (2 months) although Zhen has called her numerous times. Zhen also has a few employees; 1 Chinese girl & 2 Americans. Well the Chinese girl is getting fired this week; twice now Zhen has heard her answer the phone & say that Zhen was busy & could not do a Massage (100% money for Zhen) and did not try to schedule an appointment, but yet will always try to schedule someone for nails (50% money for her) if she is busy. Not to mention she actually hung up on me when I called for Zhen & she didn't realize it was me, wonder how many others she's done that to?! Not every wife here feels isolated or desires to be around other Chinese all the time...
