1. Our timing was similar - P3 in late June, trip to China in early July. Our P4 came in late September, with a late November interview date. I gave her a full set of documents as of the July trip, and then I refreshed everything (more recent pictures, receipts and documents) just last week to make sure it would be there for the interview.
2. Bank (and other financial) monthly statements, letter from bank, paycheck stubs, house payment receipts, pictures and receipts from recent trips, and transcripts and/or records of recent communications (phone bills, emails, IM sessions, etc.).
3. Go ahead, Jessie. Smile. You've done some very good work here lately. And I sure hope you're approved. You guys deserve it. Best of luck to you.
4. The "I-730" is used as a reference ID historically by NVC for all packages sent to the various consulates (not just in China). It's always possible that they could change. So far they have not. Unless they change, it is not a guess, nor is it approximate. I first saw it on VJ. Try it. Look for a package going to Guangzhou about the date that yours was sent.
5. Yes, you will. The functionality is amazing.
6. Hi Randy, I have been researching Chinese/English translators; I've located the YiShen 888 but haven't been successful with the Langwen 8388. Could you please verify this is the correct spelling? Thanks!!! Bill 159751 You found it - it's the Yishen 888 as sold in China. We bought it in a Beijing department store for $100 less than the Yishen 888 is sold for here in the US. She has it, so I can't verify the model number, but I'm pretty sure that's correct. The BIG advantage the both have over other translators is that you enter a whole sentence at once - English, Chinese characters, or pinyin. Well worth the money.
7. Click on 'Track' at the top of the screen, then 'reference'. Be sure to give a valid date range, and make sure you enter "I-730" exactly, as the reference ID.
8. 2 days after - they are picked up at a China Postal Savings (I hear) in Guangdong. THere are 3 of us with interviews on the same day Nov. 21 - myself, Doug (Mengxin), and Mark (Timeline or mlspyl). I think they will both be there - I will not (no more vacation time).
9. Stamp - like http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/alles_moegliche/mixed-smiley-013.gif, except with an inkpad.
10. It is very common for GUZ to not accept delivery of the packages, until they are ready for them. Go to www.dhl.com, select "Track-by-reference", and enter "I-734" (I see Beerman's 730 below - he's right - I always get 1 digit wrong) as the reference ID. You will get a list of packages sent to all consulates. Look at the ones to GUZ, around the date in question.
11. My SO uses Kingsoft translation software on her computer, I use Alta Vista Babelfish, and www.mandarintools.com. She has a Langwen 8388/Yishen 888 (I think) handheld sentence translator, which worked very well for us on my last trip. I'll be subscribing to the Great Wall package through Dish Network - also check with DirectTV and your local cable company. To enter your timeline, click on "My Controls" on the front page, and "Enter Signature". Any more questions? You came to the right place. Welcome.
12. But look into filing quarterly (estimated taxes), and self-employment tax (you pay both the employer's and the employee's portions of Social Security), so you won't be surprised. It is very easy to avoid any penalty if you keep on top of it.
13. That's gonna be rough on her, Fred. Check with your high school to make sure she can graduate, and what they will need.
14. There are plenty of Pasport Photo shops, here and there, that will make pictures to the exact requirement (size, head size, background, which ear is showing, . . .) for very cheap.
15. The China Post office that it is sent to is in Guangzhou, right?
16. Can you install it dual-boot? Or install IE separately after the Chinese XP installation? The dual boot, of course, would not install IE to the Chinese XP. Check the Chinese XP CD to see if there's not an IE installation on it. If not, check Microsoft's web site.
17. It became an option at my company because the entire company moved about 30 miles from where they had been for 40 years. Suddenly, everyone's commute was 30 miles longer. Inaddition, new regulations covering the Houston area require companies to show that they are helping to reduce commute time. So they support the work at home option, van-pooling, and a 9 day/2 week work schedule where everyone (else) works 9 hours a day (ecxcept Friday), and gets every other Friday off. Although supported by the company (because of the EPA regulations), work at home is generally frowned upon by individual groups. It has worked well for me, however, because I work at home usually 2 days a week, and come in to the office whenever I need to meet with someone. Whether you are able to work at home depends on the nature of the job. Any job where you can take your work to your office, close the door, and work for 8 hours like that (e.g., programming and some IT work)would lend itself to a work at home agreement. But distractions at home (like a daughter) might not be desirable in your employer's eyes.
18. I be flying out of O'Hare on the 15th. Yikes, just 8 days left to get ready 159032 I'll bet it'll be an awesome view of the Artic Ocean (if you're flying to Beijing) - get a seat on the left side of the plane! Do good!
19. Seeing as how you're still around (I see your member name at the bottom of the page), I'll answer. Someone else will be along shortly to give you a better answer. Yes. Yes. I don't remember hearing directly, but I think you do need to treat it as a separate and complete application. Good luck, and you came to the right place!
20. Good luck! Grease the path for us! When do you leave?
21. chef - Dennis headed for Nanning last week - you might want to check out his last post before he left, if you haven't already Dennis's "fact-finding" trip
